It so happens that because of this, people go insane in this small town where it keeps "reverting" and eventually murder people. Or get murdered. It's like I said-- it's complicated.

@Mugsi Ah, well, my experience with Naruto and Bleach is quite limited, but I'm familiar with Hokuto no Ken/Souten no Ken, and I can tell you that the Violence is equivalent in some manners as far as blood and brutality, however, the concept and I'd go as far as to say "Horror" behind Higurashi is much more prevalent, much more "Terrifying" and thus it makes the scenario "Horrific." The situations in HnK versus Higurashi are much less believable. This is in the same vein as say, Paranoia Agent.

@Mugsi Paranoia Agent is another anime I'm limited in knowledge about, it's about a young man who, I believe, is clinically insane, and believes he's a roleplaying game character who uses his "sword" (a bent aluminum baseball bat) and his "boots of fleeing" (Roller skates? I think? It's been a while...) to chase down evil and smite it, which, just happens to be people in their daily lives. Its rather gory if I recall properly.

@spivotz Needles are really sharp, so yes. I sew, so I know just how much. I've pricked myself more than a handful of times. If you get pricked by one hard enough, you'll bleed. Go find a sewing needle like that one and poke yourself with it and you'll see. Plus, if you swallow one, there's a high chance that it could poke your lung and damage it. Needles are tiny and evil. Kind of like a paper cut but worse!

this scene is alot different in the different versions. in the live action there is only three ohagi, and the needle goes through his lip (and for those who dont know he pulls it back out). in the manga there is 6, and he spits out blood and a needle. in this one there i also 6 but the needle must poke the back of his throat or something.

Keiichi thought that the hot sauce was actually blood. And, I guess it was spicy too, so he thought it was a needle due to his paranoia.

Actually this is how it goes: Keiichi has a fear of sewing needles being in his food, as a result of read a comic book about a girl who put sewing needles in a man's food when he was little. This mentally scarred him for quite awhile, and explains his violent reaction to the "needle" in his ohagi in Onikakushi-hen.

I personally can see Mion just not thinking about something like that, but the whole thing with the needle is probably an interpretation deal since there was no set "it was" or "it wasn't" kind of answer

Actually there was no needle in the food. Mion is prankster but not to the that where someone could be killed. What actually happened was that Mion spiked Rena's ohagi with hot sauce. It's not in the anime, but in the manga (which is more accurate) when Keiichi first bit into to it, he saw "blood" drip from his mouth, but that was actually the hot sauce. So because he thought he was bleeding he saw (hallucinated) a needle in the food.
