No one can live up to the bar they set for this movie. I love their cemistry in this.plus the love /hate thing henry and elenore have. wonderful movie
@JESSJUSTJESS Oh, I completely agree! I saw this movie for the first time, unedited, on PBS back in the 70s when I was a teen and my jaw dropped to the floor. I assumed I knew what memorable dialogue and great ensemble acting was--this movie made me realize I had a lot to learn about both! A true classic.
@TheCatgirl6 And this movie with its excellent acting (how could it not be with these performers) and complex dialogue has made it almost impossible to enjoy other performances of this piece.
@JESSJUSTJESS I'm afraid that's true, for me anyway, as well. I'm aware of a relatively recent version starring Patrick Stewart as Henry, Glenn Close as Eleanor and Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Philip of France, and though I've admired all these actors in other roles I just can't bring myself to watch it. I recall Hepburn and O'Toole and think: Oh, what's the point?
I used to feel the same way. But lately my attitude is changing.
Though this performance seems pretty definitive and we are so lucky to have it preserved on film, LION is after all a play. And plays are always being revived and re-performed with different casts. And unless the performance is absolutely vomitous, almost every new production brings something new to the script.
So I'm less opposed to re-makes than I used to be.
@jlmww That's a very good point, especially considering that LION began life as a stage production. I remain wary of remakes, though, because in too many instances they simply aren't as good and feel like vanity productions for actors and/or directors looking to piggyback their professional reps onto a superior original.
@jlmww Remember Gus Van Sant's "Psycho" remake? What exactly was the point of that? How many remakes of the beautiful Anne Bancroft-Patty Duke film "The Miracle Worker" have there been now? I've lost count... and oh WHY did they remake (in 2007) the riveting, heartbreaking Sally Field-Joanne Woodward tv-film "Sybil"? Stop me, someone!!
@TheCatgirl6 I wasn't all that aware of the recent remake. I must confess that I am intrigued because I think Patrick Stewart is an exceptional actor and there is no denying the power of Glenn Close. Is it titled the same?
Henry and his honest to God wife/queen were political rivals with opposing objectives. Alice was the French princess royale, intended to marry Henry's heir. Henry and Eleanor are
Highest grossing film? You've got to be kidding. The Piano? The English Patient? Shakespear in Love? Chicago? Those won and certainly didn't break the bank. The huge blockbusters almost never win actually, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Independence Day, etc. They'll win special effects, but not motion picture. It's internal Hollywood politics more likely as to which one wins each year.
Peter O'Toole has never received an Oscar has he? And Cruise gets nominated while Washington wins for Training Day? Just goes to show u the ceremony has nothing to do with the craft of acting.
People like Burton and Mel Gibson have worn O'Toole's stage performance of Hamlet is the absolute best of all time.
Peter O'Toole holds the record for having the most Best Actor nominations without ever having won the award. He's been nominated 8 times. The record for most Best Actor nominations among winners is 9, shared by Spencer Tracy and Laurence Olivier.
How many actors can stand as an equal with Hepburn at her best. Olivier, Tracy and O'Toole. Short list that. But give a thought to the supporting cast. Hopkins, Dalton, et al. they all did flawless work, not to be totally overwhelmed is an achievement on its own.
John Castle played Postumous Agrippa in the series 'I Claudius'. He has been in a few films and TV shows, but I think he prefers theatre as does Nigel Terry (excellent in 'Excalibur' by the way).
I first saw this movie at university, as part of a Medieval Art course. I think our professor said something about paying close attention to the architecture throughout the movie, but I strongly suspect the real aim was just to get us to watch it and enjoy it. She succeeded. I came away a great fan of Peter O'Toole, and list this movie as one of my favourites.
For all you youtubers under the age of 40 methinks that thou should view this film at all costs. I'd forgotten how awesome this film is. Hepburn as Elanor is simply amazing and Peter O'Toole is pretty good too as her counterpart. Hepburn is the greatest actor (male or female) ever. Her ablilty to command a stage is unprecedented and ANY thespian today couldn't hold her jock on Kate's worst day. God bless you Kate for all that u did.
A Excellent two hour bitch fest. I loved Katherine and Peter in this, AND Peter should of won for best actor and Lion in Winter should of won for best picture, NOT Oliver.
Two brilliant of acting in the same movie, surrounded by a stirring supporting cast. This movie is like watching a great Shakespearean play without it actually being a real Shakespearean play.
thank you for posting it and the joy it brought to see where i have no access to dvds!

Look around YouTube. For a while, the entire movie was available here, though I imagine that didn't last long.

Henry and his honest to God wife/queen were political rivals with opposing objectives. Alice was the French princess royale, intended to marry Henry's heir. Henry and Eleanor are
working out who that will be. Alice is
also the sister of King Philip of France,
their visitor during the Christmas court.

The Oscar has not had anything to do with talent in decades. It is awarded to the hightest grossing film, and actors attached.
Richard Burton Lose to Richard Dreyfuss?
Lion In Winter is a wonderful film, but it just didn´t make the bucks.
...and THAT¨S the Hollywood way.

I wonder who Peter O'Toole pissed off.

He got an honorary awards back in 2003, but he was again nominated in the competitive field in Venus, I guess time hasn't stopped yet for O'Toole.

And factor in also that both Hopkins and Dalton were in their first film when they made this.
It's a shame that we haven't seen more of John Castle since this, and I haven't seen much of Nigel Terry since EXCALIBUR.

Just tonight I saw Peter O'Toole in the orginal camp version of Casino Royale.
He asked Peter Sellers, "I say, are you Richard Burton?"
Sellers said, "No, I'm Peter O'Toole."
O'Toole: "Then you're the finest man who ever lived."
