@santoro2020 Oh that stinks, im hopefully going back to Berea in a few weeks so i hope a get some shots from the bridge. Did you see a CSX trains while u were there?
@Tcostello105 First I saw a west-bound empty BNSF coal train the first 10 seconds when I got there, then a slow and long intermodal NS train and in the middle of the NS one, a short CSX flew by.
@ObeeLektro lol sorry for a late reply considering its 1 year later, but last month in Kingman AZ i saw a 178 car stack train with 5 locomotives!!!! I put that video up about 2 weeks ago. I was stunned... but that was the longest train ive ever seen so far.
this location is where front street and depot meet. it is about an eighth mile west of front but currently because of bridge construction there is a detour. the best way to find it is to mapquest the station restaurant in berea
@JDStucks Right by Hopkins airport. there is (was) a restaurant there that used to be a train station- I went there all the time until I moved and then they built the overpass because of people complaining about getting to work late bcuz of trains. :-(
I grew up on Third Ave in the 60s/70s and now I'm home sick! Stopping to watch the trains is ALWAYS one of the first things I do when I go back to Ohio! BTW, If you dig around in the grass by the parking lot, you can still find some taconite pieces. My brother & I used to drag home loads of taconite, RRties and other assorted 'neat' stuff that we found while messing around the tracks!
I've been to Berea a few time - once when they town was digging under the railroad to eliminate a grade crossing to the west of where this video was shot. One of the things I like about this spot is the restaurant converted from the train station. Good food, good prices, and you can still watch trains while eating.
Wow! That's what i love about berea! Things like this don't happen anywhere else in ohio, and it's really a treat to see it so close to home. Great Video!
The overpass plans have no effect on the old station. The overpass will take the path of Front Street now, and Depot Street will stay on path to just about where the station is, and will do an S-Curve south and connect to Front Street. The station is a city landmark, and won't be torn down. I believe there is a group working to make it a museum, but in my opinion, I'd rather it see it stay as is. A museum can lead to the development of an annoying fence, such as in Marion, OH.
I hope they turn the depot into a museum that would be cool. But when they build the overpass will they rip up the road under it with both crossings? Just wondering if they are going to still keep the original road there
The original road should all be removed. They might actually finish the Overpass before they remove the old grade crossings. The overpass will actually be two bridges; One over CSX, then a fill, and then a bridge over NS. A gradient drive will be made in the middle fill for the concret/stone industry in the middle of the main lines. I have no problem with a museum in the old station, it's just that those sorts of things prompt more saftey issues and could lead to a fence being constructed.
Cody, as to my knowledge, there is NO sign of the station becoming a museum. The building is still For Rent, and no-one has tried buying it so far. You're right, it is a city landmark, and won't be torn down. The CSX crossing has already been removed (as of yesterday - 5/13/09), but the crossing signals still stand. The NS crossing is still fully in tact. Trains are now sounding their horn extra, for maintenance crews and etc. You must enter Berea the long way now, via Rocky River Dr.
glad all you guys like this. You know what it feels like to get caught by 3 damn trains at the same time right there. I only live 1 mile from there and am always getting caught by all the damned backed up traffic on front street there. I wish they would close these tracks down! It also sucks hearing these damn things every 10 minutes in the middle of the night!
I have been in Berea for 5 hors and seen over 40 trains, and traveling on the interstate to Cleaveland is only about 10 miles! Just saying because i live in ohio and go to Berea once a month.
Google Maps says 16 miles. I've lived along the (now CSX part of the) Water Level my whole life and it's always been 60-70 a day. The NS line is similar.
Nice catches, especially with the foreign power. Yeah, Berea is the focal point of the Conrail split, with the NS getting off the PRR and getting onto the Water Level Route and the CSX getting off the Water Level Route and heading SW where it jumps on the B&O main at Greenwich.
I got a few nice videos of Berea on my video account channel if your interested in viewing them----nice video

I went there today and there was work being done on one of the NS tracks, only 3 trains in 45 minutes :( But the overpass is all done.

let's turn the old restaurant there by the tracks into a train museum!
dubasher 2 years ago
Sadly that's not going to happen, they are going to rip it down and build an overpass over both NS and CSX main lines.
Tcostello105 2 years ago
not so sure that old building is coming down...it has a for rent sign on it. i think it will be spared. the overpass shouldn't affect it.

I'd imagine so, although I cannot say for sure.

How does this compare with Folkston, GA?
DGromet 3 years ago
I've never been to Folkston, GA
Tcostello105 3 years ago
Neither have I, but from what it seems, it appears that approx. 30 or more trains (all CSX) pass by the town each day.
DGromet 3 years ago
i heard Berea averaged 75 per day
dubasher 3 years ago
Try about 100-120
