Thanks sis, can't wait to sport the improved look. I'm the only one on my job who covers their hair and I just want to be stylish and correct. I feel more confident! I'm also planning on running for Charles Barron's post when his term ends and switching up the looks will be fun during the campaign and thereafter :)
This is so very helpful. I have scarves I don't wear because I can't figure out what to do with all that fabric. Now I know and I can wear my scarves instead of just looking at them. P.S. I am not starwarslord I am his mom. I can't figure out how to set up my own utube account.
I. LOVED. THIS!! I've been looking for one on the traditional African-American style of hairwrap and couldn't really find one on Youtube, but this one fits the bill!! I cannot wait.
I used to do this all of the time when i was younger, but eventually forgot how. I'll be wearing mine this week!
I paused this video half way thru to do this twist bun with a jersey strip and WOW ! love the results. I'm a white girl and plan to use this cuz it rocks. Thanks for the easy to follow video.
Dont think u got my last comment, but thanks I now know how to do it b/c of your help...I posted a vid on my outcome of the first attempt..check it out..take care =D
@SHANTESETM I'm JUST seeing this comment! YT is ridiculous with the notifications sometimes. Sheesh. Either way, I'm glad you found this useful. And you're quite lovely, might I add. :-)
hey! i went out today and bought my fabric had to watch your tutorial again at first i had a problem with it all slipping off but after the second time i got it..THANK YOU AGAIN!
Thank you so much! I am planning on going to festivals this summer and doing my hair is quite hard so i was looking for a much simplier way to hide my hair while still loking good....Thank you Darlin!
No, you definitely did an amazing job at explaining, I've always wondered how the heck people do this. And I had never thought about mixing the fabrics for a larger, more intricate bun. Great video :) Thank you.
This is awesome! Ive always wanted to wrap my hair like this but never knew how. You did an awesome job and it looks great on you! I love the large bun! Im going to try this tomorrow especially bc its been raining! Thanksssss!!! =]
I was just curious, if you drive much, how the larger knots work driving. I'm a larger woman so the knot maybe hitting my shoulder fat but I find sometimes that if my knot's too big - or maybe too low? - that when I try to check my blind spot my knot feels like it's...in the way. And I haven't done ANY knots as big as the ones you showed. I was just curious if you've ever dealt with that and if you have if you have any tips.
Ok, first confession...I'm almost 30 and don't drive. I have no license and have an odd anxiety when it comes to learning to drive. LOL But, I have sat in the passenger side. Sometimes I do have to adjust my seat so my head is angled comfortably for sitting. Hmm, I can't really speak on the knot being in the way since, again I don't drive. Since I'm inexperienced with that I can only suggest maybe having to undo the knot while driving. I know, not a very helpful suggestion. I'm sorry.
@MissObserver777 I can kinda relate to the issue you're describing. Before i wrap my bun i place my hair in a ponytail with the hair tucked into scrunchy for protection. The higher up the ponytail the higher the bun will sit off of my neck. I then use the method of wrapping that sister AvaAmin described in the video. This way i can move my head in all directions without the bun obstructing movement. I can drive in comfort ;-) good luck
Hmm...minimum size. I guess one yard or meter long should be enough to get an ok sized knot. Width just needs to be enough to fit around your head. I'm sitting here just using my imagination to answer this, so it might be even a little less than that. As for slippage, I sometimes have an issue. It depends on the fabric and size. On occasion, I will have a little slippage with my large knots, but nothing ridiculous. I guess it's because the weight and the walking combined.
Great tutorial! I was seriously trying to figure this out like 10 minutes ago, and I'm glad your video was so easy to find. Saved me having sore arms later lol
I think my head is either too small or I have the wrong fabric. THe headwrap feels like it wants to slip from my forehead. I also get neck aches or like a headache in the back of my head. Is it too tight? What is really going on?!
It sounds like it may be too tight. Not sure, but I I know I have some of those issues when i do it too tight. Or maybe it 's too heavy. Stretch fabrics are heavier, and if you use a larger piece, it might just be a bit much on your neck. If you have the same issue with a different fabric, then maybe it's just too tight. You may just need to play around with it to see what works for you. Did you pull your ears out once finished I''ve heard tucked ears bother some people.
You're head's not too small. We're working with a strip of fabric here so it fits whatever size your head is. You very well may be tying it too tightly or the fabric might be too slick for your hair type. I know a lot of women get away without bobby pins but let me tell you - they have become my best friend. I have layered hair so when I pull my hair up in a ponytail I pin the layers down and then I put two pins on either side of my head, right above my ears, by the temple. I find it helps.
omg, girl, let me first say... thank you!!! I wanted to learn this forever and I could never get it right!! And tonight after watching your tutorial, I FINALLY GOT IT!!!!!!! Your are so pretty too!! I was wondering, if you know how to do headwrap that you can have a little nod around the side of your forehead. I have seen oprah wore her hair that way. I have to send you a picture of my headwrap! LOL, feel really proud right now! LOL. thank you!!!!!
Ha! Well I'm so glad you found this helpful. The side knot I haven't really ever tried. I'll have to give it a go and maybe do a vid if I figure it out. And you say you saw Oprah wearing it? hmm. I'll have to see if I can find a pic. Thanks a bunch for your comment. It gave a me a much needed smile today.
I think it may be too much fabric now that you bring it up. I wanted that nice big knot back there. I will try it again and see. Thank you again for the response!
this is fly!!! i will definitely use this for the protective season when I do my Big Chop because I can't fanthom weave like that...lol...im subscribing now :)
I sort of stumbled accross head scarf wrapping and i have to say its become my latest obsession. I love your easy instructions, and great results im getting. Thanks so much.
You got it, hun. I usually where a smaller knot if I'm out jogging/exercising. So if the fabric is a stretch jersey like this, then a shorter length fabric would give a smaller knot. But if it's just a thin/silky fabric (i.e silk) using two yards would still give a smaller knot simply because the fabric isn't as thick. Did any of that make sense? lol
Thank you for posting this. I really love this style, and it looks fantastic on you. The variations are nice. May I add, too, that this is a very handy video for bellydancers-- might want to add a tag with that! :) Thanks again.
Absolutely! It's an accessory, really. Some cover their hair for religion. Some wrap their hair for cultural identification. But this style is just as I titled it...basic. I don't see it as meaning anything more than if I wear a hat or a wig. That's me. So whether you're black-american or half Irish and Korean...Go For It! :)
Skin color would have no bearing on this style. Bone structure might but that just means you should look around for different styles of tying and learn what works and what doesn't if you feel something doesn't work. :) And, I've found, the more I wore mine the more I was comfortable in it. I was a little concerned that someone would say something mean to me about it but I always got thumbs up. Someone once literally yelled across a store to tell me that they liked it. :)
Thank you for taking the time to make a tutorial. It was very helpful to me and saved me from some dratted hair pins. Blessings and peace to you and your family.
You have such pretty Big eyes girl!! I love headwraps...I usually wear them to give my hair a rest in between wearing my braids. Thank you for the idea for the 2 variation headwrap. Im gonna try that soon. Love your personality! Take care & thank you again :-)
You have such pretty big eyes girl !! I love wearing headwraps especially in between getting my hair braided :) Im gonna try the 2 patterns next time! Thanks for the great ideas. You have such a beautiful personally too.
Thank you so much for this vid..i am goin natural myself and will be pretty much bald till it grows out so this will come very much in handy. I tried it out myself before i even watched this and I was pretty much right in my technique but glad to still see it done lol. Thanks again =)
i'm trying to put it on as you do yours.. but once i get to the finishing part and let go .... it slips right off.. or gets undone on its own... sigh :( got any advise?
Are you trying to do it the way I did, with just the twisting to secure it? If so, sometimes that can be a bit tricky to get the hang of. One thing I, and others, have done it to use a hair tie to make the scarf into a ponytail before twisting. If that is where you're getting the problem, maybe the hairtie can help. If not, let me know. Thanks for watching!
If you just can't pull this style off I'd suggest you look up several other ways to tie a head scarf. Start simple, I would suggest bobby pins, and the more you do it the easier it is. The easier it is the more styles you can do. The first look I was ever able to do was the simple head-band look with the tails trailing over my shoulder. The next one was a Dutch Crown except I folded it in half length ways to make a head band. Then I learned how to tuck for a Dutch Crown. Practice. :)
Search the videos for "head scarf styles" and Google "How to tie a head scarf"; look through all the diverse styles of tying AND try them out on your face before you say you can't. I'm over 500 lbs. and I wear head scarfs in multiple styles. Plenty of chub on my face. Hint: Earrings work wonders for balancing out a face. Look up a style called the Dutch Crown.
Too chubby?! Oh get outta here! lol You better go ahead and rock your headwrap, honey. If you really have some concern about a round face, then give it a shot with different accessories and/or makeup. I totally agree with MissObserver777 on the earrings. I mean, haven't you seen everyone that does a wrap video throw on hoops? lol
Oh I love my hoops! I also use brooches (just normal pins that I think are pretty) and decorative fabric flowers to decorate my scarf. I pin the brooches on the dutch crown and I use the fabric flowers (on clips) with the bun styles. It helps balance out my cheeks. :) And once you put on the earrings you're just the image of fashion. :)
Thank you for sharing this. I will be trying my 1st headwrap tomorrow after i get some fabric. i am stylisticly challenged, so your vid will be a great help! I am so excited! thank you!
Duh! I should have watched the video completely before getting overly excited because you've answered my questions except where you buy the jersey material. God bless!
Great! Glad you gave it a try. I get fabric from lots of places. Fabric stores, second hand/thrift stores, family/friends, some discount stores (i.e. Walmart). In this video the fabrics are stretchy, but you can use a soft woven. I haven't tried, but would think a stiff 100% cotton would be a bit of a challenge to work with for this style.
Hey! AWESOME head wrap! I am new to headcovering and am looking for something young and fun. Thanks for providing such step by step directions that will make it easy to learn! Question .... for your initial wrap to protect your hair, do you just tie the scarf in a knot underneath your bun? Do you use clips to hold your bun? Does that hurt your head if you do? Also, is this a religious conviction or style? Thanks for your tutorial!!!
Yeah, when I wear the silky scarf underneath, it's just tied at the nape of my neck. No clips were used to hold my hair. My hair is usually worn in small cornrows and just the tail ends do I wrap into a bun secured with a small hairtie. Honestly, I've done some many different things with my hair underneath. Sometimes even just wrap it and placed on a wig cap. I don't wear it for religious purposes. That's not to say one couldn't wear it for religous reason. Thanks for watching!
Like the instructional video. Is this 2 yds of a square scarf or just a long piece of fabric? I never seem to have enough fabric to create to look you have accomplished. Other videos show a large piece of fabric as well.
Cool. I'm glad you like it. In this video, the fabrics seem to be roughly 2-2.5yds in length and maybe just under a yard wide. But that's of course for the large knots. Hope that made sense and answered your question. Let me know if not. Thanks for watching!
I'm so excited I cam across your videos. You're so talented and very down to earth. Plus, I find myself cracking up at some of the things you say so casually. I love this video in particular, though, because I've never been able to master this!
WooHoo! Thanks for the awesome comment. I do have a somewhat dry sense of humor, that I think some take the wrong way. Glad you don't. Also glad this video was able to be of some help for you. Give it a shot, and you'll have it down in no time.
No, you totally remind me of my best friend in high school. We were dubbed the "black Darias" so I think that's part of the reason I love your videos. I had a quick question: with the shadows you made from the TKB recipes, is it necessary to add the base mix? I'm using the plain micas right now and they wear really well, but if I get further into this, I was wondering if I needed all of the extra stuff, or if it even makes a difference aside from slightly diluting the color.
You mean the mixing color vid, not pressing one, right? The pressed video needs to be COMPLETELY done over. I may have kinda botched it, I think. As for the mixing one, I don't think you HAVE to use the base. Some of the recipes on the TKB site don't use the base. I think the base is supposed to help with the texture or something. I forget. But I didn't even use it for all of mine. I pretty much used it because it was there. My brothers used to call me Daria.
Glad I could help. That stretchy patterned piece is close to two yards long. That's what length I usually go with for a large knot. That solid black was just under a yard long. When worn alone, I get a smaller, more subtle knot. Hope that made sense. Thanks a lot for watching!
I had this scarf and I just try the basic bun wrap and I love it! I am wearing it right now with a cute capri and cute top with a scarf belt! I look like a gypsy with black hoops earings! THANK YOU!!!
Thanks so much for makin this video. I'm saving it to my favorites and subscribing. I've been tryin t find a video that explains how to make a bun quite simple and urs was very easy! I like that you also showed how to layer so I can change mine up some too. Thanks so much and you're Beautiful girl!
I'm so happy you could find it useful. I was afraid my instruction would be confusing, but people seem to think it simple. Mission accomplished!! thanks again.
THIS VIDEO SAVED MY LIFE THIS MORNING!!! Thank you sooo much. Last week I made the decision to go from perm to natural hair and got the BIG CUT! So now i have about two inches of new growth and I was so uncertain what to do with it for school. Then I looked this up, grabbed moms scarfs and got a bun going!! THANK YOU!!!!! :)
I was sure I replied to this two days ago. Guess not and I apolgive. Anywho...you can get scarves/fabric from several places. Department stores, clothing stores, thrift stores, fabric/craft stores, Ebay, Etsy, yard sales, street vendors, ethnic shops...all over. You could even get creative and cut sheets, t-shirts, or whatever. I think I'll post a follow-up video going into options of fabric and such. Hope this helped. Thanks for watching! :)
hi, you seem like a sweet young lady, best video I found so far. uh, I wear a hair wrap but after viewing your video I realize that the length isn't long enough, I might send you a video response just so you tell me what you think, thanks girl, good job!
First, thanks for the compliment on my demeanor and video. I'm always open to receive a video response, and I can let you know what i think. However, I am a firm believer in make your own rules, as long as it works for you. When you mention length, you're referring to the fabric, right? I usually use about 2 yards That way, I can use the whole length for a large knot or fold in half for a smaller one. Either way, if you think I can help with something, let me know. :)
You're SO welcome. I was just worried about it making sense or explaining clearly. Oh, and of course I had to shout you out. "We gotta stick together. We're black actors." LOL
(I tend to make lots of Dave Chapelle references out of nowhere. sorry)
I would, but it would only be like a 30 second video. lol I only have one mascara: Revlon 3D Extreme. I pretty much don't like it, but use it because I got two on a sale. I like the mascara, just not the brush. Mine picks up way too much mascara, and covers the freakin bristles. When these wo are finished...i'll be shopping for a new one.
Thanks sis, can't wait to sport the improved look. I'm the only one on my job who covers their hair and I just want to be stylish and correct. I feel more confident! I'm also planning on running for Charles Barron's post when his term ends and switching up the looks will be fun during the campaign and thereafter :)

Im sorry if I am repeating a question but...
What do you think is the minimum size (measurement) of material for a wrap?
Do you notice any slippage through out the day?
I wrap with a stretchy ...something, it used to be a skirt.
Anywho, its slips through out the day and i have to keep tugging at it or rewrapping it.

Hey there great video what size cloth do you need to wrap your head like that??? Thank you
Jamnican 2 years ago
Very nice! Do you think a girl who isn't black can wear this?
dirtypillow27 2 years ago 10

girl do you. Rock what you like.

good explaination, but once im done twisting and pulling around, the knot just flops down and it comes apart...
cocastar26 2 years ago
You may just need to tuck the tail under tighter. Make sure it's firmly underneath a strand that's nice and tight.
MissObserver777 2 years ago
Thank you for this video. Great tips. I will try the twist tomorrow. :)

Thank you so much for this vid..i am goin natural myself and will be pretty much bald till it grows out so this will come very much in handy. I tried it out myself before i even watched this and I was pretty much right in my technique but glad to still see it done lol. Thanks again =)

i'm trying to put it on as you do yours.. but once i get to the finishing part and let go .... it slips right off.. or gets undone on its own... sigh :( got any advise?
or idea?
RandomlyThoughtOut 2 years ago
Are you trying to do it the way I did, with just the twisting to secure it? If so, sometimes that can be a bit tricky to get the hang of. One thing I, and others, have done it to use a hair tie to make the scarf into a ponytail before twisting. If that is where you're getting the problem, maybe the hairtie can help. If not, let me know. Thanks for watching!
AvaAmin 2 years ago
If you just can't pull this style off I'd suggest you look up several other ways to tie a head scarf. Start simple, I would suggest bobby pins, and the more you do it the easier it is. The easier it is the more styles you can do. The first look I was ever able to do was the simple head-band look with the tails trailing over my shoulder. The next one was a Dutch Crown except I folded it in half length ways to make a head band. Then I learned how to tuck for a Dutch Crown. Practice. :)
MissObserver777 2 years ago
wow ur so pretty with it!!!! my face is a bit to chubby 4 it lol. but ur gourges u go grl
iloveukahlil 2 years ago 2
Search the videos for "head scarf styles" and Google "How to tie a head scarf"; look through all the diverse styles of tying AND try them out on your face before you say you can't. I'm over 500 lbs. and I wear head scarfs in multiple styles. Plenty of chub on my face. Hint: Earrings work wonders for balancing out a face. Look up a style called the Dutch Crown.
MissObserver777 2 years ago
Too chubby?! Oh get outta here! lol You better go ahead and rock your headwrap, honey. If you really have some concern about a round face, then give it a shot with different accessories and/or makeup. I totally agree with MissObserver777 on the earrings. I mean, haven't you seen everyone that does a wrap video throw on hoops? lol
AvaAmin 2 years ago 8
Oh I love my hoops! I also use brooches (just normal pins that I think are pretty) and decorative fabric flowers to decorate my scarf. I pin the brooches on the dutch crown and I use the fabric flowers (on clips) with the bun styles. It helps balance out my cheeks. :) And once you put on the earrings you're just the image of fashion. :)

Duh! I should have watched the video completely before getting overly excited because you've answered my questions except where you buy the jersey material. God bless!
majoshlin 2 years ago
Ah, it's ok. No biggie. Happy you got the answer either way. May God continue to bless you as well!
AvaAmin 2 years ago
Beautiful. I've been experimenting and actually received numerous comments on it....even from my hubby. Thanks!
PS. Where did you buy your material? Is it the stretchy kind? Thanks in advance. God bless!
majoshlin 2 years ago
Great! Glad you gave it a try. I get fabric from lots of places. Fabric stores, second hand/thrift stores, family/friends, some discount stores (i.e. Walmart). In this video the fabrics are stretchy, but you can use a soft woven. I haven't tried, but would think a stiff 100% cotton would be a bit of a challenge to work with for this style.

it looks very very nice on you and it's so simple, i will try it out some time to see how it looks on me :D thank you very much

Thanks for your tutorial!!!
itsaonegodthing 2 years ago
Yeah, when I wear the silky scarf underneath, it's just tied at the nape of my neck. No clips were used to hold my hair. My hair is usually worn in small cornrows and just the tail ends do I wrap into a bun secured with a small hairtie. Honestly, I've done some many different things with my hair underneath. Sometimes even just wrap it and placed on a wig cap. I don't wear it for religious purposes. That's not to say one couldn't wear it for religous reason. Thanks for watching!
AvaAmin 2 years ago
Like the instructional video. Is this 2 yds of a square scarf or just a long piece of fabric? I never seem to have enough fabric to create to look you have accomplished. Other videos show a large piece of fabric as well.
HotPeachDoneRight07 2 years ago
Cool. I'm glad you like it. In this video, the fabrics seem to be roughly 2-2.5yds in length and maybe just under a yard wide. But that's of course for the large knots. Hope that made sense and answered your question. Let me know if not. Thanks for watching!
AvaAmin 2 years ago
I'm so excited I cam across your videos. You're so talented and very down to earth. Plus, I find myself cracking up at some of the things you say so casually. I love this video in particular, though, because I've never been able to master this!
Thanks!

WooHoo! Thanks for the awesome comment. I do have a somewhat dry sense of humor, that I think some take the wrong way. Glad you don't. Also glad this video was able to be of some help for you. Give it a shot, and you'll have it down in no time.
AvaAmin 2 years ago
No, you totally remind me of my best friend in high school. We were dubbed the "black Darias" so I think that's part of the reason I love your videos. I had a quick question: with the shadows you made from the TKB recipes, is it necessary to add the base mix? I'm using the plain micas right now and they wear really well, but if I get further into this, I was wondering if I needed all of the extra stuff, or if it even makes a difference aside from slightly diluting the color.
Thanks!!!
IBeforeApathy 2 years ago
You mean the mixing color vid, not pressing one, right? The pressed video needs to be COMPLETELY done over. I may have kinda botched it, I think. As for the mixing one, I don't think you HAVE to use the base. Some of the recipes on the TKB site don't use the base. I think the base is supposed to help with the texture or something. I forget. But I didn't even use it for all of mine. I pretty much used it because it was there. My brothers used to call me Daria.

This was so helpful! Thank you so much for posting it. How long are those fabrics?
naturallyracheal 2 years ago
Glad I could help. That stretchy patterned piece is close to two yards long. That's what length I usually go with for a large knot. That solid black was just under a yard long. When worn alone, I get a smaller, more subtle knot. Hope that made sense. Thanks a lot for watching!

jtsbabygirl1986 3 years ago
that scarf is so cute where do you get ones like that?
shaye1289 3 years ago
I was sure I replied to this two days ago. Guess not and I apolgive. Anywho...you can get scarves/fabric from several places. Department stores, clothing stores, thrift stores, fabric/craft stores, Ebay, Etsy, yard sales, street vendors, ethnic shops...all over. You could even get creative and cut sheets, t-shirts, or whatever. I think I'll post a follow-up video going into options of fabric and such. Hope this helped. Thanks for watching! :)
AvaAmin 3 years ago
hi, you seem like a sweet young lady, best video I found so far. uh, I wear a hair wrap but after viewing your video I realize that the length isn't long enough, I might send you a video response just so you tell me what you think, thanks girl, good job!
jackaynetter 3 years ago
First, thanks for the compliment on my demeanor and video. I'm always open to receive a video response, and I can let you know what i think. However, I am a firm believer in make your own rules, as long as it works for you. When you mention length, you're referring to the fabric, right? I usually use about 2 yards That way, I can use the whole length for a large knot or fold in half for a smaller one. Either way, if you think I can help with something, let me know. :)

if you haven't already, can you do your mascara collection and a little of what you think of each one?
disney1nickjluvr45 3 years ago
I would, but it would only be like a 30 second video. lol I only have one mascara: Revlon 3D Extreme. I pretty much don't like it, but use it because I got two on a sale. I like the mascara, just not the brush. Mine picks up way too much mascara, and covers the freakin bristles. When these wo are finished...i'll be shopping for a new one.
