The other Alex Hutchings video at Andertons-- it was interesting to see you Rob, with the same look on your face, watching Alex, that Lee usually has watching you.
Well, since guitars don't have hair, I can't only assume you speak of Alex Hutchings. He happens to be a person, and being that slavery is a despicable practice, I feel inclined to inform you that he is not for sale in any way shape of form.
Nice yamahas, I was looking at that same model of acoustic to buy for my girlfriend bc of its narrow body and size, and great price.. at least I have a valid reason to buy another guitar lol
@twistedrock Jazz is a musical language...just like blues...just like rock...just like every other type of music. This would be equivalent of Shakespeare giving a masterclass on great Korean literature. He obviously knows his shit, but doesn't speak the language. What he's "saying" wouldn't be stylistically appropriate...know what I mean? No personal attacks on the musicians intended. I'm sure Wes Montgomery wouldn't be able to teach an 80's metal workshop lol.
@twistedrock What I was saying is that while both players are obviously technically adept musicians, what they are playing is not "jazzy". Last time I checked, shred licks and fast pentatonic runs were not part of the jazz idiom (unless we're talking fusion, which is a different story). To retort your statement, yes you'd be correct. Someone noodling over a blues progression would NOT be playing the blues. Blues is an idiom and has its own style just like jazz does.
@Danwhaley4311 Alex is more on the fusion side but pete was playing pure jazz lines and just because they aren't playing over changes doesn't mean it isn't jazz.
@Danwhaley4311 Can you show me where the fast pentatonic runs and shred licks are in their version of equinox? All I heard was lots of nice jazz lines.
They're both exceptional guitarists/musicians, but none of that was jazz...Barney Kessel is Jazz guitar. This is just a bunch of noodling over 7th chords.
But when your favorite Jazz guitarists are the likes of Alex Hutchings and Guthrie Govan its still a bit overwhelming.
But one thing I was surprised they didn't mention was that taking a chord progression and adding the 7 to chords (C Am F G becomes C7 Am7 F7 G7) will get you sounding jazzier right away. Not to be confused with major seven for those major chords.
Fantastic vid, well thought out questions too, Chappers nice one (beats 'what is your favourite colour' like in some interviews!). Can someone tell me what tune the boys were jamming around at the start?????
i would really like to listen to more and more jazz ... problem is .. i dont know where to begin ... can someone please mention some good artists or bands to whom i can listen to :D thanks :)
Can you get Tom Quayle and Alex Hutchings to jam together... you might need at least 1 hour of video storage :) If it happens let me know... I could do with a day off work to watch that live :)
Chappers, I bought myself a Blackstar HT-1R head (with a little Vox 1x10) from Andertons, based on your recommendation. It's balls-to-the-walls awesome.
Both are INCREDIBLE but Alex just blows my mind every time I hear him play!!! And , after watching this, someone actually asked if Alex knows theory..... I just don't think you could move around the fretboard like that without knowing what you're doing!
BTW- anyone else having an issue with the words and mouths matching up?
If there was ever an unintended endorsement for budget Yamaha guitars, this is it!! Just proves that 90% of tone is in the skill and fingers. This is a great format. More interviews with smart talented musicians. Fantastic!!
