The name of this episode is called on face value and it is season 4 the 1983-1984 season it is episode number 82 its a real good episode the car park high speed chase scene is brilliant and it is brilliant scrip writing i wonder how many times they had to practice this car chase scene to get it right it is a lot of fun to watch that chase scene that white Pontiac GTO is a 1970 make and model according to the magnum pi magnum mania internet site a site for all things magnum which car is faster
when magnum pi makes that first right hand turn you can see another white pontiac gto parked facing them in the parking garage i wonder if that was a back up stunt car for the other guys chasing them and shooting at them are if the producers just happened to put another pontiac gto car their with all of the other cars parked in that parking garage to make the parking garage look full are did they have it their on purpose to have as a back up pontiac gto in case that car chase seen went wrong
"When I write my book about being a private investigater, rule # 168 is going to be, if your getting chased, to be in a fast car. Then as the two guys in the GTO catch up to him, his inner monologue continues. "Post Script to rule #168, no matter how fast your car is, there could always be one thats faster".
I remember this scene from the 80s He said "being a private detective it's always good to have a fast car. But again there may be somebody with one faster!"
I like the earlier scene in the same episode, where the thugs are chasing him in the GTO, and he drives away in the Ferrari, and in his voiceover says something like "In my line of work, it's always good to have a fast car."
Then he looks in the rearview mirror and sees the GTO closing in on him, and says "Of course, sometimes the other guy has a faster one."
Right with you there redmr2na and weallfollowmanutd! There ALWAYS something special and unique about a Ferrari, no matter what year, model or color it is, etc. They are true enthusiast-oriented cars. Camrys and Accords won't even come close, and yes... I have a Camry as well!
Even speaking as a classic Pontiac fan, an owner of a classic Pontiac (until recently) and still being involved with classic Pontiac clubs, I'd much rather have the 308. Only wish that they had the V12s!
Um, who cares? It's not aways about speed and power, it is more about the pleasure of driving. A Honda Accord V6 is so dull it will put you to sleep even if your driving it. A 308 demands that you stay alert and focused at all times. Also, 30 years from now 308's will still be valuable, a Honda Accord V6 won't.
That car will forever be symbolized with this show. Ferrari should thank Selleck for all the publicity he gave their car. That car was $60.000 when it was new. An F430 sells for 200grand not counting extras. My how inflation changes! However you can get a car like Magnum's in mint condition for around $30 grand. That's why the 308 and 328 series are recognized as "everymans Ferrari". It's the only lol "affordable" Ferrari.
I love how the tail of the 308 breaks loose. I also love the way the Pontiac crashes in to the parked car. This was due to the fact that the GTO had the engine up front, rear wheel drive, lots of power and horrible turn radius. It understeered right in to the other car.
If there was a car that signified the 80s, it is the 308, a lot of stars in the 80s drove them. Tom Selleck, Christie Brinkley, Eddie Murphy drove a 328 which was pretty close. Eric Clapton had one briefly, and I think that even Macgyver drove one in an episode.
I would rather have the Ferrari regardless of value. You also have to remember that the GTO was based on the engine and supension of a lesser Pontiac, the Ferrari was not just a supped up version of less interesting car.
I'd rather have the Ferrari. It's not how fast you get there but the enjoyment of the driving experience. Sure the GTO is faster, but the Ferrari handles better. The new Ferrari F430 would blow the doors of that GTO.
I love how the pontiac actually had a chance against the ferrari XD

I think the line went like this.
"When I write my book about being a private investigater, rule # 168 is going to be, if your getting chased, to be in a fast car. Then as the two guys in the GTO catch up to him, his inner monologue continues. "Post Script to rule #168, no matter how fast your car is, there could always be one thats faster".

This comment has received too many negative votes show
That 308 is a joke by todays standards. A honda accord v6 will embarrass it , ha ha. Those cars are super cheap on ebay now.

I wonder if Tom Selleck is driving the Ferrari himself?
redmr2na 3 years ago
Not really except for shots where you actually see his face in the car.

Whoever was driving the Ferrari did a hell of a job.

That's exactly how it should have ended. GTO is faster, but handling goes to the GTS.
