  • Corporations pay more for eye-level shelves in supermarkets, so you will always find the best brands on the middle shelves, did you know that?

  • Green tea is my favorite! i have been drinking it now for 3 years and i love it! King Cole organic in my opinion is the best! :)

  • We use coupons. A lot of the stuff she is saying are cheaper if you make it yourself, if you use coupons are free or nearly free.

  • For the hot cereal you could just buy the cereal you want and warm up the milk on the stove or a microwave.

  • Marmite is gorgeous!

  • MARMITE you either love it or hate it and I hate it. :)

  • As for buying in bulk, if u have the room to store it & have a big family that is cheaper for u, but if ur like me, by yourself, its better to catch sales & stock up on what u would eat before it would spoil. Large amts of bulk food going bad is not saving u money. Also clip coupons on foods u like as they do save u money & buy according to them & sales, not just what u need at the time..then again, u must have storage room. Also, make a garden!! Even if its containers, that food is free!

  • Good points, I'm on my own too. I buy anything I can in bulk that will keep well over a long period - sugar, honey, salt, certain canned goods, legumes etc

I live in a small apartment but i grow alfalfa sprouts under the kitchen sink , herbs and tomatos on the balcony and two window ledges, & potatos, onions, and garlic in styrofoam boxes on my landing and stairs

Talk to your neighbors in high density housing - they usually don't mind you using common spaces if they get a share of the crop

  • @kingazzaman, hey give me a buzz on here and add me as I would like to learn more on growing sprouts properly and harvesting them..I am interested in that..as for space I have 5 acres to experiment with on gardening but still do container stuff in the house..my soil is crap due to clay and rock so Im trying to do raised beds outside but my lot is pretty shaded so am having some problems plus trying to stay organic and still get a decent harvest...thanks!

  • A google on "how to grow alfalfa sprouts" will give you the basic method.....but...

Alfalfa MUST be rinsed 3 times a day or it get's stinky. (if you're out of the house a lot - grow something else)

Use good water - the stuff from the tap is often full of chlorine, flouride, and other nasties which the delicate alfalfa seeds hate.

As for the soil problem, take a look at No-Dig-Gardening. It's a good labor saving method. No heavy digging and you can leave the clay and rocks alone :-)

  • As for your shade problem - My parents had a similar block - coincidentally with rocky, clay soils (I'm on a sandy coastal plain)....

My best advice is befriend a tree guy ( we call them tree loppers here) and sweeten him up with some of your homegrown produce.

Find a sunny patch and have him trim away all the branches that face inward to the sunny point. Use No-Dig or containers

When the branches grow back, find a different spot and repeat the process. Happy trees, happy veges, happy u

  • PPS unless your talking about mountain-shade, or valley shade - that's where my advice runs out. LOL And don't forget all that good space on your roof.

  • yup black tea & coffee both contain caffeine & any "eine or tine" is a drug & addictive & bad for ya if u take it in daily..it irritates the heart making palpatations & dysarrhymias & the tyramines in both causes high blood pressure..everything addictive has more bad points than good points, people should treat it like medicine & only use it when your sick & need that stimulant for a reason..not consume it daily. You wouldnt take codeine daily would u? No, u would use it when u had a cough.

  • Thanks Nancy!!!

I learn so much from your videos

(including how to bake bread) no one is teaching this kind of stuff anymore. I love the comment about cookies ' just buy a cookbook' LOL - reminds me of my mom :)

  • Green tea, black tea, oolong tea -- they do all come from the same tea plant, Camellia sinensis. The leaves are simply processed differently. They both are rich in polyphenols, which are a type of antioxidant. Tea has more caffeine than coffee but caffeine is a substance that is now believed to help prevent Alzheimers in women especially. According to what I have read green or black, tea has about eight to 10 times the polyphenols found in fruits and vegetables.

    Great video series Nancy.

  • Green tea is NOT from the same plant as black tea. Coffee has actual health benefits in moderation.

  • MARMITE! yes I'm from England and I love it. You have to spread it very very very thin though otherwise it does taste disguisting. It's very good for you and it is a bit expensive. These shopping vids are great and I have learned from them.

  • Now, I'm getting hungry.... :)

    Dena

  • I agree, a lot of the stuff on the shelves are just things for people who have no time. LOL Now, about the tea, I wish I could grow it here...and yes...sigh...the coffee...LOL

  • I was referring to mint tea and other herb teas. Black tea is just an addicting stimulant!

  • The inside aisles are the KILLER ones with all the junk & expense....basics are always on the outside aisles... meat/dairy/produce/bakery..Red River cereal is a Cdn product...talked my hubby into eating it once & he wasnt impressed haha I miss my Tenderflake lard! No bulk food stores here waaaaaa I had great fun with you at Food Basics...one is right down the street from me in Oshawa & I miss it ! There is also a Price Chopper at the corner too ! sigh

  • Wonderful video Nancy. Do they also put the cheaper things on the bottom shelves in your store as well? I agree with making your own. We have made our on pancake and muffin mixes homemade by bulk. Barry then buys me fresh blueberries we freeze and I throw handfuls of them in when we want to whip up either. For our morning breakfast grits is big here. You can add milk or water...cheese is really popular. A little goes a long way with them. TY for the yeast tips...I did not know that!

  • Cool shopping youtube.
