i have a weapon for larping kind of like this. but instead of it being a mellee weapon i throw it like a frisbee and it does large amounts of damge and can kill a unarmored player.

I hate to break it to you guys, but I get twice as many kills going single Mado than sword and board. It's extremely practical, and unless you're facing a red weapon or a beserker, you should be fairly problematic for the oposing team. Of course, I doubt anyone would select a SHIELD when facing a red weapon, anyway, when a dagger works just as well as a small puncher.

Wrong. There are many historical examples of Center Boss/Grip shields.

And in foam combat, some of the best fighters in the game use center grip shields.

He's not going to hold it at full extension. His elbow is more than likely going to sit at a solid 90 degree angle so that the arm is solidly near the pocket of your hip. And if you do rush... a good jab to the ribs or a stab to the nuts will stop you in your tracks.

As far as I can tell, shield bashing is an illegal move in amtgard.

The punch shield isn't as much of a weapon as a tool. You can use it as a weapon as much as a defensive tool, and while you wouldn't use it to simply block a high powered strike, like with a strap shield, you can have enough speed to either stop the weapon in it's track while it's before the maximum power ark, or just dodge, since it's less cumbersome. You can also use it to deviate the enemy weapon, not really block it.

That would not be a punch sheald, but a Buckler... You can punch with all shealds and Bucklers...

You're wrong my friend. The reason it is called a punch shield is that you hold on to it similar to that of a sword. There are two types of shields. Punch Shield, and Strap Shield. You cannot punch with a strap shield. You can bash with one, but you can't punch with it.
