I have figured out what was bothering me about these past two episodes.

Most of DoS is funny because Stan's NOT a loser. He's into word games and geek stuff, but he's really an ordinary guy, neither very stupid nor very ugly. The joke is on Ted because Stan isn't nearly as pathetic as Ted seems to think.

These past two eps, though, have made Stan look extra whiny and helpless. He's less likable than usual.
