I think that this problem of not to be filmed professionaly is not only fault of floyd in this period...other progressive giants like Genesis in the lamb days, Jethro Tull or Crimson not worried themselves to film their concerts...i dont blame about it, because tha haunting for a rare material is funny, and with the internet, you can find intersting material...but is bad when you want to see something with good quality despite these dark and one camera stuff.
I give them a pass for not having themselves filmed in 73' or 74'due to the euphoria of success. But by 75' and certainly 77' they should have had the fore thought to have had their concerts documented. they put so much effort into producing an amazing concert experience w/ screen films, animation props, lights and puppets. why would they not think to film all this
@tjrtherocksponge that stache was a concept album in itself ... it was freakin gatefold ... when he lost that it was like samson getting his mullet cut ... mason went from bonham to cessna-on-the-driveway in one quick snippety snip
At the LA Sports Arena Concert 1975 we were searched BIG TIME for cameras, recording devices, drugs, there were many flashlights in the eyes, goons walking in the aisles, sniffing about. We still managed to get enjoy some serious 420 Thai Stick HA HA! So whoever got this recording and video was a better man than I. My guess is they had up the ol' bung. We were 4th row. Ahem.
I need to say this. It's shocking how you can find every sort of video of the Floyd in their underground years, but not a single decent one from the period when they were basically one of the best selling acts in the world. I mean, what were they thinking? I hope a there's a drawerful of secret videos from this era waiting to be opened one of these days. Anyway, thanks to whoever filmed this. It's shitty quality, but a treasure nevertheless.
What is just shocking to me is that the biggest-selling act of the mid-70s was never filmed professionally during the tours for their two biggest albums (DSOTM and WYWH). Yes, thank god for bootlegs...but still, the quality...it's so dark I can't see a thing!
@mtopper66 Actually, The second performance at the Brighton Dome Was Professionally filmed in it's entirety but was still never officially released. I know, a bummer... :C
Just checked out some of the Youtube clips of that...great stuff, probably not released because "Live At Pompeii" was filmed at the same time...still, I'd like to see something pro-shot from the WYWH era...
i wonder how this movies recorded ... were they have mobile cameras at seventies ?.. huh or may be using digital cam cameras ?.. damn really i wonder how it' been recorded
have a cigar along with shine on you crazy diamond, raving and drooling and you gotta be crazy were all played live in 1975 before recording of wish you were here nad animals(1977)
Right. Back in the day, The Floyd used to test out their new songs on the road before recording them. They quit doing it mostly because of the bootlegging. They were playing Shine On as early as '74, and the whole Dark Side album was being toured in '72 as a whole piece (minus one or two songs) called 'Eclipse' before it was officially recorded as DSOTM.
thats right,an illegal release of dark side live was released before the album was even out.i love the early versions of the songs from dark side, wish you were here and animals.its such a shame the footage from the above show is not clearer,it would be amazing to see.pink floyd are my my fave group
High water mark for the Floyd. All downhill from here. Rodger slowly ate away at the members and Floyd got away from the improv stuff like this. Too bad.
I was at the opening night of a 5 night stand here at the L.A. sports arena and this was actually the last leg of the D.S.O.T.M. tour- Wish You Were Here hadn't been released yet but they were doing some songs from it. There was a huge, obnoxious police presence-i've never been searched that thoroughly before. The only other band that had a sound system as good or better than Floyd was the Dead and both of those bands could play man!!!
Actually, they had already started recording Wish You Were Here before the start of the US tour. The story of Syd appearing at the Shine On You Crazy Diamond mixing session is said to have happened just a couple days before they were scheduled to leave for the US tour in 75.
Actually, the 74-75 shows wasn't part of the Dark Side Of The Moon tour. The Dark Side Of The Moon tour was 73. The shows in 74-75 were meant more to road test the new songs that were meant to comprise the next album. THey did the same thing in 72, playing the Dark Side Of The Moon songs onstage before the album was recorded.
I agree they did the same in '72 but that was the "obscured by clouds" tour. How tours go in the industry, specifically at the big time level that Pink Floyd was in at the time, was to "tour" the just released album. Bad Company did the same thing in '74-they lined up a certain amount of dates to play and then, after album sales went beyond expectations, added more dates to the original tour. i believe floyd only played L.A. and N.Y. on the last leg back to England.
When i bought the tickets for this show, the original promo posters were used as when the "Darkside" tour began. All the concert extras (shirts, posters etc...)were for "Darkside"The album was doing so well that they added these shows on to the end of the D.S.O.T.M. tour. Floyd never really stopped touring this album between mid '73 and early '75 which is why they didn't do a "Wish" tour, they didn't come back to the states till "77 for the "Animals" tour.
Sorry geoffwode1, but i disagree. If you read my comment, i didn't say that they "never stopped touring", what i said was "they never really stopped touring THIS ALBUM (d.s.o.t.m.)between mid '73 and early '75. Wish wasn't released until September 12th, 1975 so the shows they did between the release of D.S.O.T.M. and W.Y.W.H were in support of Darkside. As far as a lengthy break, i agree they didn't tour as heavily as the late 60's-early 70's but they still played (cont.)
(cont.)39 shows in '73 (of which only about 29 or so came after the official release of Darkside),27 shows in '74, and 29 shows in '75. The original slant of this discussion had to do with someone telling me that the '74-'75 shows weren't really Darkside shows (by that reasoning Floyd only did 29 shows after the official release in support of one of the biggest selling albums of all time!)but you see-i was there and remember all the promotion. Besides Zeppelin, the biggest shows in L.A. in '75.
Yes i was, and i seem to remember that there was a guest saxaphone player on some songs and a rhythm guitar player (Snowy White?)that was onstage for most of the evening-UNLESS I WAS SEEING TWO OF EVERYTHING (which was a distinct possibility!!!)
You're right Forboding Frog, i'm ashamed to admit i forgot about Yes and their system. They may have even been superior to all others in the vocal projection dept.-really clear through the beautiful cacophany that was YES!!!
