No matter what anyone says, Royce will always be a legend/master to me. He made history not only because he did it first but because he was dominant as he did it.
If it was'nt for Royce (and more importantly, Rorion for starting the UFC), grappling would still be laughed at. I grew up in the 80s and Judo then was literally laughed at by Karate/Kung Fu ppl. Yeah, a Judoka or a wrestler could have won UFC 1, but then remember it was the BJJ ppl who actively sought to fight NHB. No Gracies = No UFC.
As for 'stealing' the art... stop being so insecure. Renzo himself says the origins are from Judo. Tons of BJJ'ers train Judo. Grow up.
@Dizzytrill187 You are incorrect, the Gracies do talk about Helio being defeated by Kimura, the match and its outcome is common knowledge. You can criticize them on how they say Helio didnt really lose since Kimura outweighed Helio by 100 pounds or Kimura stated if the match lasted longer than 3 min then Helio would be the winner.
@Dizzytrill187 No stealing. Carlos attended Mitsuyo Maeda's school as a child and, his father paid for lessons. Several years later, Maeda left Brazil and, without an instructor, they kept it going. They are correct to call it Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, since the name honors the Japanese origins. Since they emphasize self-defense, it would be wrong to have called it Brazilian Judo, since Judo, according to it's founder, Dr. Jigoro Kano, is much more than fighting skills.
@SteelClaw No need, I remember the whole thing well and its well documented Benny showed up at Rorians garage and got taken down. All you need to do it look at the history of the Gracies and you would realize they didnt back down from people who know grappling. The Gracies door was always open to challenge matches and to say they refused to match Benny because he knew how to grapple is just plain silly.
I hear people talk about how BJJ is not the best, but it is very realalistic. Most fights go to the ground or are a grappling match. Having BJJ will help win that fight and know how to defend your self.
I don't think you'll find a martial art that is more enjoyable to train than BJJ. Can you grab hold of your opponents finger and break it, disrupting a mount? Sure. Gouge an eyeball and disrupt a side mount? Of course. There's sport fighting and then there's kill the mother fucker and get away without consequences. In other words, fight for sport, train BJJ. For reality, become very proficient with a gun and hone the proper mindset, KNOW that you can kill without hesitation if need be
lol I pretty sure that Judoka, Sambist , and Catch Wrestlers all thought of using superior leverage and technique before the first UFC . Don't get me wrong I love Brazilian jiu-jitsu but there where grapplers before and after the UFC was on the map .
@TheLatinoSamurai I agree with you, grappling is not really a new thing, because the spartans which had pankration which is a similar ground and pound fighting with grappling, including chinese wrestling shuai jiao. But I do love Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, since it was interpreted in it's own way by Helio Gracie, by his own weakness which was actually a blessing in disguise, and that helped him develop more leverage techniques for smaller fighters like himself.
