A lot of the time, it gets blocked, most likely from food matter coming in from the small intestine or a hardened mass of faeces. The appendix has no exit, so it gets stuck and an infection sets in. It should be removed before it ruptures, but even if it does, the person can still live if they are treated urgently. A man I know survived this thanks to the fast action of hospital staff.
