  • I thought my All-State pieces were hard.

  • I allways listen music of king singers between two study moments, in al little break. And I love this number most of all ♥♥♥

  • A very good interpretation musically. Alas, their pronunciation of French is a bit too "British sounding" to the ears of a native French speaker (which I am). I by far prefer the rendering of the Ensemble Clément Janequin.

  • I love this rendition. I hope to see them in concert sometime!

  • "Victoire! Victoire!" "Tute felore begot!" Simply wonderfull... I love this music *___*

  • Heard them perform this last week in Boston - so accomplished, so humorous, just gorgeous. Their new bass Jonathan Howard (not the guy in this video) in particular has an utterly remarkable voice.

  • @akacentimetre you've gotten the chance to see johnny live??? you lucky soul you... how impressive was he, scale of 1-10? i hate to put you on the spot like that, but i must know.

  • @kingssingersgirl Sorry for the late reply! I never saw Stephen Connolly live so I can't compare them or put a number on Johnny per se, but put it this way: my family is incredibly musical, my parents sang madrigals, and I'm in a period music group, and within two pieces at the concert we saw we were turning to each other and mouthing 'Wow, that bass!'. I'm not sure I've ever heard a low voice providing such a strong foundation and being simultaneously so resonant. Very impressive indeed!

  • @akacentimetre oh ok! sounds great! i'm kind of the opposite of you. i've seen stephen in concert, but not johnny, so i'm anxious to compare the two. not saying compare in a bad way, you know what i mean.

  • @akacentimetre I must say Johnny is a very good bass singer from what I hear on YT, but I have to admit that Stephen was slightly better (also compared to YT vids. Never heard Johnny live, so it would be unfair to base my opinion between live singing and YT). Maybe it's because Stephen was older, and often at higher age male voices will go lower (not always of course, like Davd ;)) and/or the quality gets better.

But Johnny is a worthy succesor to Stephen. Can't wait to see him perform live.

  • Wether it's pronounced well or not, this performance shows exactly what the story behing this song is. The fighting, the fleeing and at last the victory. Great performance

  • wow. I love the playful deliverance

  • i always love the end section, beginning with chris's entrance at 5:55. it always gives me chills.

  • @kingssingersgirl Certainly! Although I do prefer Paul Phoenix's part (maybe because that is the part I'd have to sing too).

  • @arqueologo oh really? have you sung the song before?

  • @kingssingersgirl Not in full and all together, sadly!

  • Does anybody else, like me, want to love the music, and not really care about how they pronounce each individual word!

  • please I need english or polish translation urgently!!

  • They make it look so easy!

  • Amazing

  • These sing this so well that it makes it really difficult for anyone else to ever want to tackle it. The tempos are wonderful but faster than most can execute. Bravo king singers!! I like the comment further down that Jannequin would have bowed before such a performance which probably exceeded his wildest expectations.

  • WONDERFULL!!!!!!!!!!

  • Has the sixth voice been written by Janequin?

  • @red6352 Nope, the fifth voice in fact was written by Verdelot, and that's the version they're doing. The two countertenors are singing in unison most of the time

  • brutal

  • Jannequin would have bowed in front of such a performance, but I think he thought it to be a bit more solemn...you know the King in those times...

  • Those extra kilos suit the bass :p

  • This is very fascinating. (:

We are going to be singing this song in my choir at school.

    I'm really excited!

  • I agree with the person who commented that this is the best batch of KS ever! I totally agree, and I have been following them for over 30 years. This bunch is just superb in every way. I'm dreading losing Robin and Stephen, and I hope David, who I think is the most wonderful countertenor on the planet, stays in the group for many more years. I'm so grateful to have their DVD "Byrd to Beatles" so I can continue to enjoy this best of the best KS line-up. Perfection!

  • Absolutely wonderful ! It's as good as the Ensemble Clément Janequin's interpretation. The pronunciation is very good, one could even think the KS are French !

  • perfect

  • VICTOèRE WèW !! WONDERRRFFFUUULLL

  • 3:47 when the tenor sang, "les-COM-pai-gnons" the 'com' was supposed to be B flat.. but instead he hit B..

so it goes "C'-B-A-G", while the correct notes are "C'-Bb-A-G"

gosh how lame am i?? if i know it too well, maybe i should get a life -_-

its because i adore this piece so much.. janequins the best!

and still, king's singers are the best. tee-hee. love 'em so much! :D

  • @seamusfinnigan2000 they've clearly just prepared the slightly odd major perfect cadence at 4:02 and made the triad major rather than minor. Could be a print error or typo, or it could be a deliberate change in the harmony... however it hardly sounds like a mistake to those of us who've not heard it before, so thanks for pointing that out and making me listen out for it!

  • @jdp2606 now that i play that part again, i hardly can find the flaw -_- they sang it perfectly. the tenor hit "Bb" alright. and the correct notes are C'-Bb-A-C', not C'-Bb-A-G like i said before. what the hell. i was such a douche back then.. lol

    anywho, King's Singers FTW :)

  • Great, nice, beautiful! I love it!

  • Oups ! My English is bad . J.C.

  • There are not words enough to say how this rendition is great and imaginative. The pronunciation is quite right and respectful of the french renaissance uses. Even for french people it is intelligible.Ten thousand times Bravo.

  • @frenchiecocorico1 except at the end "toute frelore bigot" which must be prounonced as "by God"

  • @red6352 i kinda like it as they pronounce it, since the swiss mercenaries would probably have the same ("bii Gott" is perfectly correct Swiss German, especially in the old Cantons) :)

but i guess it depends on whether or not one wants to interpret "toute frelore bigot" as a mock-form of Swiss German^^

  • @red6352 Not at all, The last words must be pronounced "Bei Gott" because the Marignan battle (Milan suburb, Italy) occured between french king François the first army and Austria Emperor Charles the fifth army including german soldiers (reîtres). In this polyphonic song there were those german soldiers declaring the defeat with the sentence "tout est ferlore bei Gott"

  • @frenchiecocorico1 Yes, it's in French, but it's an ancient French, and they have a british accent. It's intelligible, but, for French people it's hard to understand.

Sorry for my bad English but I'm French and I don't speak English well (It's my favourite subject at school, so, I'm learning :D)

  • I absolutely adore this group ^_^

The interpretation, sound and facial expressions... priceless!!

I'll miss Robin Tyson but I understand the new counter tenor is awesome! What else can I say, KS is total awesomeness!!

  • What?

  • It seems to me that "viktoèr" is closer to the correct pronounciation. It is a bit how some older people pronounce that word in french canadian Québec where the spoken french is very close to the renaissance french. But is is only an opinion.

  • @andrediane "viktoèr" is the correct pronounciation (for old french of course) so they are right =)

  • a total mispronounciation on the "Victoire!" word,

it should sound "viktoarh" rather than "viktoer".

anyway, listening them made me feel like I were

on Janequin's ages. great job guys, see ya in

    Paris next January :)

  • @cyberax51 I guess that this is the prononciation of the old French.. It is quite impossible for the King's singers to be wrong in the prononciations!! But I am not sure..

  • I listened them singing Cyrillus Kreek, an Estonian composer. I am Estonian. I could not understand a word they sang. So, I guess the melody is more important.

  • Nah, in ancient french, you pronounce 'Victoire' as 'Victouère' and not as the today french 'Victouare'.

It's the same thing in Josquin Desprez works : 'Moy' (= moi = me), that you pronounce 'mo(u)é' and not 'moa', like nowadays.

  • This is the best batch of the King's Singers. I love them. I have their DVD Concert Performance "From Byrd to Beatles" and I should say they did a magnificent show. Very entertaining, too.

  • This concert is also awaylable on Dvd. "The KIng's Singers at the BBC Proms" or some like that. Hope this is a useful information. ;)

  • @barbarabarbi With regret, because I love the current KS, I agree with you.. The album "Madrigal History Tour" is a real masterpiece..

  • It's interesting to listen to this King's Singers compared to the one from the late 70s/early 80's.

  • Spectacular singing, these guys are the best singers i ever heard (and i heard a lot). Simply how they flow harmoniously with the music, and it felt as if this is exactly how Janequin wanted it to be.

They perfected this song. Thanks for posting...
