Kate looks pretty hot in that video. I can understand the hate for Kate constantly going "Jack, Jack, oh Jack!" throughout Titanic, but that is more an issue of the script rather then her acting. From what she was given, Kate did a phenomenal job of bringing depth to her character and making the somewhat-cliched romance feel real.

Judi Dench in MRS.BROWN gave a superlative portrayal and was vastly more deserving that year. Similar unworthy "flash-in-the-pan" wins were Gwyneth Paltrow and Reese Witherspoon.

What a FANTASTIC year '97 was in film! "As Good As It Gets" is a GREAT film with great writing and great performances by Jack, Helen, and Greg. Helen deserved the Oscar this year..her portrayal of Carol was filled with humanity and didn't come across as "fake" (and this coming from a die hard Kate Winslet fan) I do think Kate with the others gave amazing performances but Helen's stood out.

Titanic was such a technical masterpiece that Kate's performance is easily downplayed. Bonham Carter: Oh it's Helen not Helena he said. Damn it. Maybe in the future I will play a Queen to win one.
Christie: Damn maybe in ten years time I will do another big role & I will win.
Dench: The perfromance of my life as a queen and they give it to her. Well Im playing a queen again so I will win next year.
Winslet: OMFG. I should have won this.The whole world has went Titanic crazy this year. All those days underwater. I even got bronchitis

@Sauloalopes She was actually disappointed that Judi Dench didn't win because she and Judi are supposedly good friends. Judi was actually the front runner for this award since she won a Golden Globe and a BAFTA that year.

Really Helen hasn't done anything major since this. Dont know why she got the Oscar.

I like that win. Still, it's pretty ironic that all Best Actress nominees that year returned to the Oscar races with the exception of Helen Hunt.

Titanic was such a technical masterpiece that Kate's performance is easily downplayed. However, her performance _was_ the movie, and upon repeated viewings, the depth she put into the performance becomes clear. I haven't seen Mrs. Brown, The Wings of the Dove, or Afterglow yet, but I can at least say that Kate deserved it over Helen Hunt's performance, which was admittedly good.

A thoroughly wonderful performance that totally deserved the Oscar. Kate became a fine actress but she was nowhere near Helen's level in that year.

@weertyou So? Helen won the Golden Globe as well (in the Comedy/Musical category) plus the SAG Award. She was also a frontrunner. Either way both Judi and Kate are sore losers. But they both got Oscars later on in their careers so it's all good.

Wow. Helen Hunt is just amazing. She's so graceful and elegant. Unlike other actresses who win and totally freak out and ramble on incoherently, she's just so incredibly poised and self-possessed. Love her.
