@LegendKiller252 the LHC poses no danger to anybody or anything. The extreme conditions that it creates are confined to such a small space and they only alst for such tiny fragments of time that the energy will dissipate before it has any chance of harming anything.

Previous research into these particles you think are so unimportant has given us transistors (thus the computer you are reading this on), lasers (which read your DVDs and CDs, perform eye surgery, thwart the imperial army. etc) amongst countless other things. If you are looking for wasted money, look at the banks, military and whatever it cost your government to pay your science teacher's wages. There are applications to medicine brought by this type of research already saving money. E.g. tumors are destroyed by particle therapies which cost far less than it would cost to keep people alive on expensive drugs that don't work well.

@LegendKiller252 You seem to have the right idea about what needs to be solved but don't you see that science and technology help? Without tech we wouldn't have the weapons or intelligence to fight terror & crime. Pollution is helped by better, cleaner technologies for power such as nuclear fusion (which has already received help from LHC in the cooling required). New technologies bring new products and therefore feed the economy and generate jobs reducing the number of people who are homeless.

The main reason is to break up the atoms in order to analyse the quartz. We know alot about quartz already but its the higgins quartz we know little about. The higgins quartz is the one that is supposed to provide mass to atoms. If we can get a better understanding then we can start solving things like why mass produces gravity.

I remember the whole media craze surrounding the opening of the LHC. The media was pretty successful convincing the general public that it was going to generate black holes and other doom particles. At least it got science into the public eye for a little while. I know enough people asked me myriad questions about it, so that's good that it sparked people's imaginations at least.
