the part where Octavian goes "Silence!" and his mother goes silent....fucking awesome part of the show hahaha. The only better moment from the entire series is when Caesar and his forces cross the Rubicon in front of that kid fishing and Mark Antony winks to him. fuckin epic
People are complaining about the portrayal of Agrippa, but the portrayal of Octavian is worse because he is a central character who they make out to be a total asshole but who was actually quite moderate in real life. And they also make him a sexual masochist, which was entirely fictionalized.
@squamish4244 Yeah the "slap me during intercourse, honey" crap was a little weird, but Octavian was quite ruthless in his thirst for power. He'd cut your throat, unlike Caesar who was considerably more gracious to defeated opponents. was he more reserved in face to face interactions? probably, but it is hard to show both sids of that coin in a historical drama like this
In later life Agrippa marries Octavian"s (Cesar Augustus') daughter Julia. It is hard to believe that he would have been much more protective of his sister although this after all historical fiction. Atia would have been much older than Antony, probably dead by the time he defeats Cleopatra. What is true is the life long affair of Julius and Servilla.
You know...I never liked the way Agrippa was portrayed in this show - like some kind of love-sick puppy. In reality the man was an all-round badass and won most of Octavian's battles for him (including the battle against Mark Antony and Cleopatra) -his contributions to Rome were effn' MASSIVE in every area of life possible - this was the great grandfather of Nero, 3 time Consul, Tribune of the Plebs, and, and...::calms down:: ...okay I'm cool now... and he was portrayed like this? boo :(
@LeviathanoftheDanube ...the little screen time he had it was spend falling in love or acting upon said love. So it’s natural that we don’t see la the sides of him outside of the romantic one (And his urge for battle at Philippi). This series isn’t about him otherwise I’m sure we would have seen all the other aspects of his life. So don’t judge this too harshly.
@LeviathanoftheDanube Totally agree. Agrippa may be the most underrated historical figure of all time. The guy was immensely talented and was generally responsible for every military victory attributed to Octavius (who was an administrator of genius but a terrible soldier/general). Octivaius would never have been what he became without Agrippa.
Octavian may have been psychopathic and quite the prude but h knew how to play public sentiment. One way or another he had all his children killed off but that could have been Livia's planning to get Tiberius in nest. He was just as ruthless but lacked the charm to put on the public face, probably depressive.
We need a sequel to this show. A spoof reality television series on MTV called Dinner with the Juliis with confession rooms, drama, and everything. They'll become the new Kardashians or whatever.
Best scene in the series "you will be a figure of fun." Octavian didn't mess around. Funny how he ruled the longest of all the classical Roman emperors.
@lokna Ignore the whiners, they are desperate to get the attention they are missing elsewhere. The acting is the best I have ever seen in my entire life, and I've seen quite a bit of acting, so this duder is either completely oblivious or is just desperate.
Even I, who have not seen the complete series can tell you, I vow to watch it! It seems that good!
I liked the actor who played young Octavian but I agree than an older Octavian, after seeing war and focusing his ambition would have turned out a bit like this. I remember the famous scene of torturing Evander. He was all sweet-faced but was cold and meticulous about how to get the truth from Evander.
@smithbrain I believe he was a tyrant in the making. He certainly had a brand of ruthlessness that could easily turn to utter cruelty. Note how he went after Cleopatra's children. And how, once he became the "man" of Rome, he turned the tables on his mother and sister and could have isolated or banished them and there wasn't a thing that could have been done about it.
@jonwiley To be fair to him, in the ancient world no competent dictator would leave a rival's children alive, especially if those children had a claim to power. In this case, Cleopatra's children could claim they were children of a "goddess," well as blood from Antony and Julius Caesar. Octavian knew damn well one of those kids could grow up to become extremely powerful, because that's exactly what he did by using his own claim as Caesar's heir.
"I will have this sad story told in the Forum". Today all you do is turn on your PC or MAC or whatever and just post it on the Forum and the gossip spreads like wildfire. LMAO!!
@Tommonius HAHA i never thought of it that way! Genius!
I think Agripa was the greatest victim of all in this scene. I forgot how it was in the show, but historically he was what gave Octavian military strength, which allowed him to pave his way to emperor. If Aggripa wasn't alive, Octavian would never have achieved success (or maybe he would've used someone else just like him). And all he wanted was some lovin' :(
They failed to portray the Agrippa's character, he looks like a bashful clumsy peasant, him! Whereas, what a remarkable personality he needed to be worthy of Augustus!
One of my absolute FAVORITE scenes from the entire series - I love how incredibly brilliant Octavian is and the way he says "silence!" almost makes my mouth water! lol - He was a brilliant man because he surrounded himself with people that knew a great deal about things he did not (like Agrippa, who was quite the bad ass in real life). And I agree, they left out sooooo much history but I don't think HBO was really trying to pander to the history buffs out there. I loved this show!
I must disagree with people saying they didn't like Octavian after the character change. I think he was the only perfect character with Anthony a close second. He may seem cruel by OUR standards, but when we think about what the social mores of the times were he acted completely appropriately for the situation. Plus it would only make sense he would be a little f'ed up by anyone's standards considering his childhood.
YEAH I SAW IT TOO I DON'T REMEMBER THE EPISODE BUT HE TOLD HER " I SHALL BEAT AT TIME CAUSE IT ME GREAT PLEASURE) AND THERE WAS THAT ONE TOO WHERE THEY WAS HAVING SEX AND SHE KEEP SLAPPING HIM. THE HARDER SHE SLAPPED HIM THE FASTER HE WENT.
The worst character portrayal is Atia. They turned a woman that Rome loved into a childish whore. The next worst was Cleopatra.. bcz they left out the manipulative voice & failed to explain her Greek origin (descendant of Ptolemy, Alexander's general), or the whole struggle for power. I hated the character change of Octavian too, until the Senate scene where he somewhat took power...though to note, he didn't actually bring in the Army. Sulla (which should have been discussed did that)
ARE YOU KIDDING ME YOUNG OCTAVION HAD NO POWER AND KEEP BITCHING ABOUT EVERYTHING. WHILE OLDER OCTAVION IS HOTTER, SEXIER, AND SMATTER. HE NEEDED TO BE THAT CRUEL.
@JennMarie52 Agreed. They turned one of history's greatest leaders into a one-dimensional villain. Which is a shame, considering their great portrayal of Julius Caesar.
Augustus was definitely capable of being cruel and manipulative, much moreso than his great uncle. However, his characterization really needed to have these elements balanced out by displaying Octavian's more admirable traits.
@rigstula he didnt start showing much of his admirable traits until he became the princeps, before that he was ruthless. but it was a necessary evil for he could not have achieved all that he had without being ruthless when he needed to be.
@mysticdark1 Indeed, it is true that he was ruthless before he attained absolute power, and I'm sure the creators of the series would have 'redeemed' him if the series had continued for another season and shown his reign as emperor. I think they went a bit too far, though; Octavian should be portrayed as ruthless, but some layers of complexity would be welcome to make him believable as a human being.
@rigstula i think i agree as well, the previous actor was able to achieve that. Like when he was torturing evander, that was cold but he also had a likable personality.
It's too bad the 2 minutes before this scene started (which was kinda a prelude to the scene) and the few seconds after where he and livia sit at the dinner table were edited out.
Antonius couldnt strike him becouse he knew what political powers Octavian had. It was in that scene that in really sank into Antonius what power Octavian held. The first Emperor of Rome. Let me add that Octavian couldnt have become Emperor in the first place if it wasnt for Julius Caesar.
@weirdscience81 I hate Octavian, Mark Anthony is my favorite character with Vorenus and Pullo... Yes, Caesar created Octavian and Octavian killed Caesar's blood son with Cleopatra (By historical story he wasn't Pullo's son and he was poisoned). Some things are kind of unclear here... Did Octavian really almost declared war to Mark just because he was screwing his mother instead of sister? Well, that was his mistake anyway, he should marry him for his mother at the first place...
@ukgirlonce Yep, he was a tough little bugger, knew Pompey's plans with just a moment of lateral thinking, his abilities are only matched by his uncle Julius Caesar. The series also shows that he is not a soldier but a ruthless and cunning politician, he hurts Marc Antony were it hurts him more: his image with the army, her mother with the money, ect.
He's such an asshole but Antony's character and the actor that plays him pretty much make this TV series. So ruthless and manipulative. Things get real interesting when Antony gets angry. His expressions and tone are just awesome!
I have to disagree with you there. Octavian indeed had a very set idea for what would make Rome greater, but he had to, HAD TO court popularity all the time.
Mark Antony was one of the most celebrated men in Rome, and the only thing Octavian did better than him was plan political moves. That's why he fulfilled Ceaser's will, that's why he sent over his sister, Antony's legal wife, to be rejected so he would be hated. Octavian was no touchy-feely leader, but a ruthless, shrewd, and great one.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
antonios is a brutal fucker just like Octavian said. He that only with his dick and thats what destoryed him. I mean common ho would want to lose everything because of that planky slut cleopatra
One must remember that this series is only a fiction sligthly based on some of the historical facts. The way the characters are portrayed is just a director's vision. ;)
The casting of this show was amazing. Great work from James Purefoy and Ray Stevenson as Mark Anthony and Titus Pullo, and the rest of the actors were just as brilliant as them.
I don't think Octavian's cold. Its just his way of being clever. Cause this time, he won't let his sly mother and sister lead him astray like before...
Precisely, every time Octavian shows emotion his sister and mother exploit it. By this stage in his life he has learnt to shut off his emotions to counter prevent this.
Haha first time i think Anthony has been left speechless. Octavian's revenge at last! Anthony, Octavian, Atia and Octavia are brilliant in this scene.
i love this scene because it was the first time octavian left marc antony without aything to say or do. normally marc antony had a lot of shit to talk to when he was crossed and ended up doing whatever he liked. awesome acting from everyone in the scene.
Octavian (later Caesar Augustus) is a real ray of sunshine in this clip. He was a self rightous prude when it came down to the members of his family, and insanely ambitious.
I love how Octavian is so cold, emotionless, and ruthless.

darket1234 1 year ago 10
dont you think he is what they made him
ukgirlonce 1 year ago 2
@ukgirlonce Yep, he was a tough little bugger, knew Pompey's plans with just a moment of lateral thinking, his abilities are only matched by his uncle Julius Caesar. The series also shows that he is not a soldier but a ruthless and cunning politician, he hurts Marc Antony were it hurts him more: his image with the army, her mother with the money, ect.
Cleopatra was right... he has a rotten soul.
darket1234 1 year ago 6
He's such an asshole but Antony's character and the actor that plays him pretty much make this TV series. So ruthless and manipulative. Things get real interesting when Antony gets angry. His expressions and tone are just awesome!

@DrCubeFTW Totally agree, James Purefoy is just brilliant!

This is man who put his own ambittions behind his loyalty to Rome. The result was the Pax Roma. Our leaders are to controlled by polls and the media.
aquillaaust 2 years ago 6
I have to disagree with you there. Octavian indeed had a very set idea for what would make Rome greater, but he had to, HAD TO court popularity all the time.
Mark Antony was one of the most celebrated men in Rome, and the only thing Octavian did better than him was plan political moves. That's why he fulfilled Ceaser's will, that's why he sent over his sister, Antony's legal wife, to be rejected so he would be hated. Octavian was no touchy-feely leader, but a ruthless, shrewd, and great one.

One must remember that this series is only a fiction sligthly based on some of the historical facts. The way the characters are portrayed is just a director's vision. ;)
asmodeus585 2 years ago 4
The casting of this show was amazing. Great work from James Purefoy and Ray Stevenson as Mark Anthony and Titus Pullo, and the rest of the actors were just as brilliant as them.

I don't think Octavian's cold. Its just his way of being clever. Cause this time, he won't let his sly mother and sister lead him astray like before...
Octavian Rox B-)
keeelaah101 2 years ago 13
Precisely, every time Octavian shows emotion his sister and mother exploit it. By this stage in his life he has learnt to shut off his emotions to counter prevent this.

i love this scene because it was the first time octavian left marc antony without aything to say or do. normally marc antony had a lot of shit to talk to when he was crossed and ended up doing whatever he liked. awesome acting from everyone in the scene.

Octavian (later Caesar Augustus) is a real ray of sunshine in this clip. He was a self rightous prude when it came down to the members of his family, and insanely ambitious.

I didnt like the new Octavian when I first saw him but know Im starting to like him
Bebbe88 2 years ago 6
Dude, I have to say Octavian really flexed his muscles in this scene. He's almost ballin' as much as Antony was.
