Used to spear suckers in the spring snowmelt in Michigan, when I was a kid. They make spawning runs up the small streams from the Great Lakes from March-May. We would brine and smoke them over apple and cherrywood. They weren't too bad coming from the cold water, and gave a lot of smoked suckers to old-timers who didn't spear fish anymore.

Contrary to popular thought, suckers don't pursue bass or panfish eggs. Or any eggs for that matter. I'm not against spearing, to each his own, I just sure hope you're smoking them (pretty good with shorelunch) and not just throwing them away because they're suckers.

They're also the defining forage for trophy pike and muskies in lakes lacking ciscos or whitefish.

Are these fish spawning or on their way to spawn ? I assume that they are not in such concentration all year round. Where do they live the rest of the year etc. Are they a lake fish or sea fish that travels to spawn?

@stricklandsahib These fish are spawning and are on their way upstream to get into another lake where they will swin around and eat bass and lake trout eggs. They spend the rest of their year feeding off the bottom. This is at the start of may, and i have seen them run until late August, but that could be for reasons such as beaver dams or other blocks in the river, and these are freshwater fish so they are only in lakes

You can snag them with hooks, that's about it. Watch a national geographic video or something man. They have a sucker, like a bottom feeder in a fish tank. They eat fish shit and rotting carcasses on the bottom of a lake. Which is why they destroy lakes and water clarity in lakes. The reason they are up in these streams is because it is spring and they are spawning. Bow fishing for them is fun too!
