I'll make this point in two seperate post as it's going to be long. But lets start with a bit of history. First slavery didn't in with the emancipation proclamation. NO, don't be surprised. Read next post.
I'm building up to something here I promise. But we have to look back at what happend after the civil war. Yes black were free, but, and there is a big but. There was Neoslavery, or share croping, if you will. Blacks were also forced to work in prison camps due to small offences for months if you were outside a bus station and the "Man" felt that you were a vagrant. So during this time all the way up until World War two blacks were still being inslaved.
Now lets look back even further; and this is why I keep telling you all this isn't about race but class, during the days of slavery, there were the wealthy land owners, and the poor wites. The poor whites were the overseers, who job was to keep the slave in line. The blacks were learning skills, while the overseer was not. Yes skills, carpentry, cooking, etc. When slavery so call ended, the poor whites found themselves competing with the newly freed black man.
This in any country or community would cause caos. But the wealthy , again seeing away to profit from this decided to take the devide even further. The poor white looked like them, but the still had disdane for the poor whites. They felt that they were ignorant, and in most cases didn't like the poor whites religion; catholic. But they knew that they couldn't keep the two together as this would cause issue with control.
So with that, they decided that the blacks should no longer not be able to vote, but they should also be seperate; Jim Crow now on the scence. Durng this period, the poor white was given the leg up on the black; better school for starters, and they flourished while the blacks were still subject to the threat of imprisonment for small, and sometimes no crime.
Over time, the poor whites are becoming increasingly educated, and the blacks are now being seen as criminals, a stigma still believed today. So lets take two families from a time before slavery in southern America, and walk with them through history. One black, and one white. The white fmaily were not slave holders, and came to this country after slavery. Lets say they were Irish. The black family has had roots here lets ay since, the mid 1700.
here we have these two families. The white family is free to go about their daily life with out free of being subjugated into forced slavery. They go to good schools, may not be the best, but far better then the schoolss the children of the black family attend. All the while some of the black children don't even attend because they have to work the feilds to pay back the heavy loans they took out that year.
So farming was a fmaily affair, why do you think childern are out of school during the summer months; think about it. However, the white children went to school as their parents; tough they were high, had lower lower interest rates on their loans. That and the fact that a white man decided that the black man of the black family owed him money. He was taken before the magistrate and found guilty; though there was no proof of monies owed. So off to prison he went.
Now the black family has no patriach, the family once again is broken due to slavery. But the white family is still going strong, even though they too are poor. Fast forward, the childeren of both families are now grown. The white children now have somewhat of an education. However the black children are still under constant threat of froced slavery. The white children have now gone off to college or now run the family farm which has grown in worth over the years.
Both children now have children of their own. The white family has now become apart of the system and they too have now joined in the plight of the black family. Paying only $2.00 a day for black service to the penal system for black service to tend the farm and the house. In just one or two generations the white family is moving out of poverty, while the black is still the lower class.
Time still moves on, now we've come to the sixties. Some blacks have moved away from the south, and educated themselves, but not many. The wealthy whites see this as a threat to their control yet again. The civil rights movement can't be stopped, as that poor white family is now in power and understands what the black family has gone through; LBJ. And it all comes to an end, black can vote, eat where they like, etc. But the scale still is tipped.
Why is the scale still tipped? Because the black family still is uneducaed for the most part, and still has a harder time getting into school like Harvard and Princeton even though they are allowed. My point there are White Universities; though increasingly becoming more multi-cult, but still white. Whites don't need these same oppertunities, as they've had them for the last 150 years. Blacks have not. Hope this was clear and understandable.

The educational resources in the ghetto don't set up students for success, also factor in the countless other limitations that come with being poor. Simple fact the road to college is much harder for people of oppressed nationality and yes SOME poor whites, that needs to be made easier.
@kickzo If a quota is necessary, base it on an assessment of relative disadvantage among the applicants. Under the current system, a black child of rich parents with a 2.0 could get accepted over a poor white child with a 3.0. I know first hand the disadvantages of being poor. I also believe America is a long way from equality in the provision of education in grades K-12. I still think that panelist gave a response that is disingenuous at best and her figure of 99.9% was made up.

Because of this history, there are UNEQUAL STARTING POINTS TO BEGIN WITH. The "quotas" are just a small step in the direction that will try to make up for this inequality, or the "head start" that whites benefit from and blacks/minorities do not. Think about it. Say your family has been playing baseball for generations and generations..

@NumbaOneDanca I never said I was smart . . . But it's clear that African Americans have many programs working for them (i.e., the Negro College Fund, NAACP,scholarship opportunities, etc) that whites do not have.
The system is unequal to begin with because of the welfare and support that allows for a comfortable living without picking up one's feet.

I'm building up to something here I promise. But we have to look back at what happend after the civil war. Yes black were free, but, and there is a big but. There was Neoslavery, or share croping, if you will. Blacks were also forced to work in prison camps due to small offences for months if you were outside a bus station and the "Man" felt that you were a vagrant. So during this time all the way up until World War two blacks were still being inslaved.

The poor whites were the overseers, who job was to keep the slave in line. The blacks were learning skills, while the overseer was not. Fast forward, the childeren of both families are now grown. The white children now have somewhat of an education. However the black children are still under constant threat of froced slavery. Time still moves on, now we've come to the sixties. Some blacks have moved away from the south, and educated themselves, but not many. I actually do believe affirmative action is getting outdated, but I wouldn't expect white people to understand. Most of them probably have never experienced being stereotyped, or finding out that you didn't get the "job" because you are "black". @kickzo If a quota is necessary, base it on an assessment of relative disadvantage among the applicants. Under the current system, a black child of rich parents with a 2.0 could get accepted over a poor white child with a 3.0. I know first hand the disadvantages of being poor. I also believe America is a long way from equality in the provision of education in grades K-12. I still think that panelist gave a response that is disingenuous at best and her figure of 99.9% was made up.

If they feel comfortable making it easier to except applicants, respect it. It's very hard getting a job as a firefighter, the waiting list is 6 months or 2 years (forgot). My issue is that a white woman is unfairly characterized as a racist for addressing an unfair consequence created by the quota system. The black panelist, apparently no stranger to lying, is characterized as the epitome of virtue, and the white woman was villianized. You seem to only be concerned with inequality when it affects people of your race.
