  • Grandioos!

    Merci bien.

  • Liszt/Demessieux, Labric, and Cavaillé-Coll - a winning combination! If this is not available on CD, I don't suppose you could make it available for download? Please?

  • @1963mathetes

No CD as it is a single track. But download... I will consider that...

    Thanks

  • This is the most fantastic recording. Beautiful balance of direct and reverb, the organ sound is wonderfully captured, and the playing is just right for the instrument and the building. Did you make the original recording or is it off a CD?

  • @MarkHarmer

I made the original recording, it was in 1990. It is not from a CD. It was recorded with professional equipment but the intention was not to have a professional sound recording, it was just for a "souvenir". Glad that you enjoyed it.

  • @MarkHarmer Most old churches in France were built in the 12th and 13th century. The acoustics in these churches were based on the Gregorian chants, the monks sang, and not on a big Cavaille-Coll organ, like this, and on complicated music of Liszt neither. Because of the reverb of almost 8 seconds one hears only a pulp of sound. It's too bad about all the notes Liszt has written down in the score. One can barely hear it.

  • Wonderful how this Cavaille Coll pressurizes every air molecule in this space! One of the GREAT masterpieces of organ building throughout the world.

  • love it !!!, funerailles is on my short list of tunes to be played at my funeral !!! i dont think many of them will understand it !!! .. must write out my list sometime, never know when fate will fall !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • OMG this is such an incredible organ. It has to be one of the wonders of the world.

  • It changes the entire work of course but interesting! jpb

  • Why on earth is this not on CD ?!?!?!

  • Well, just becuse this is the only piece I've reocrded at that time... I know it's a pity.

  • well, its simply stunning. If I had to choose ONE cathedral in Europe to visit, this would be the one. The reasons are obvious. (just listen and look at the pictures!)

  • Technically, & I know this is nit-picking, but St. Ouen is not a cathedral. Rouen has a cathedral, & this is not it. This is (was) a basilica. I syt was because I don't know if it's even that any more. It's no longer used for religious services. So I guess you could say it's just a very large sounding-board for one of the world's most spectacular musical instruments ;-)

  • @db11711 if you got acd recorder or mini disc just get a two phono in to a 3mm lead, plug the lead into you r computer input plug and plug the two phono into cd recorder, hey presto !!

  • @birdandthe or even easier just download a youtube downloader software (take your pick ) and download it as video or mp3 !! hey presto !!!

  • magnifique.............

  • A sensational recording, a sound portrait of a magnificent instrument played with great flair and musicianly inspiration. At times the cathedral's space seems to be almost as wide and as deep as the Atlantic ocean. These reeds speak with noble authority, heroic voices from heavenly realms. Labric senses the power and poetry of this music and performs with absolute command of both repertoire and extraordinary instrument. Highest rating!

  • Jeanne Demessieux's music is mixed on me. Somebady please post a video of her Te Deum on this organ... :(

  • This is awesome music and the photos are too. Going to my favories list for sure.

  • Labric - the last titulaire at S Ouen...

  • @marsvltor2: Labric has never been titulaire at St-Ouen.

  • Incredible.

  • This recording captures the best impression of the sound and feel of this Organ and building of St Ouen. The capture is not too close, perhaps a little down the nave, but from memory this is all about right. Nice to hear the chamades a la solo! Many thanks for posting!!

  • I certainly agree that Labric is an outstanding musician, but stating that he is "the only organist who was really able to make St-Ouen sound right" ? I'm afraid you're overly nostalgic here...

  • Je ne pense pas. En tout cas, dans quel cadre? Puisque c'est un document unique. Mais j'adore ça.

  • Aeolus sort ça en CD ?

  • Fantastic to hear this piece on this instrument, played with great drama by Msr Labric. Are there any more like this hiding in your vault? :-)

  • Thank you. Any more? I have to see. This has always been one of my favourites. I lost the tape and then found it again a few months ago!

  • I just found this guy (Aeolusianer). I guess I'll just have to spend even MORE time cruising YouTube !!
