After bailing out Northern Rock and RBS the debt level for the whole UK was just under £700 billion - if Scotland was to become independant it would only take on around 1/10 of that number if based on population not half of it. I'm kinda in two minds about the Scotland independence thing. On the one hand, if they want to rule themselves then that's ok, but on the other hand it will cause a lot of problems, like borders, social segregation, debt problems, business problems, passports etc. And to be honest, I have always wanted us to move forward and become a global civilization, and this seems to be a step back from the ideal type 1 civilization.

@kamakaziRider88 It was my opinion of course. But any type of separation will have some ill effects in terms of social structure and other things. Look at it logically. If Scotland leaves, then we will become divided in more than just country, and I for one would find that a sad thing indeed. We should unite now more than ever, especially when the whole world is at a point in history where it could go two ways, become a global civilization or go downhill.

And currently Scotland recieves LESS money than what we contribute to the United Kingdom Treasury. If Scotland were to be Independent, Scots would govern over every aspect of their lives, All taxes and revenue raised in Scotland from our population, natural resources and industries would completely transform our country!

@glasgow1234 We may give more money right now but due to UK subsidies and development aids we would have less money to spend and maintain our growth if we were independent. What will happen to fill the gap...cuts will have to be made (eduction fees, prescription costs)..and this will no doubt effect the Scottish people. Other potential thing such as Scotland joining the EU and joining the euro will cost money and mean that people will have to change money to go to England. Just a few things.

And Scotland does not take England's taxes. We get back LESS than what we contribute idiot! And our population is over 5 million, not 4. To suggest that Scotland has HUNDREDS of BILLIONS of pounds of oil is nonsense, which anyone would know who understood the issue. The oil fields are not owned by Scotland, but shared, and rights are a complex legal issue. They are gone in decades anyway. Wise up.

@THthefirst It wasn't me that suggested that there is hundreds of billions worth oil left, it was actually the Chief of Executive of BP himself that stated that fact. He also stated that there is at least 50+ years of oil left with many areas still to be explored. Now you can easily have a little search on google for that statement he made about North Sea Oil. I think if we are to listen to anyone's views on NS Oil, we should be listening to him.

Just a couple of things:

1. Scotland has a deficit because it spends a lot more on the public sector than is the case (relatively) in England.

2. The oil is not owned by Scotland. It is far more complex than that. Perhaps you might have a little search on Google too. As Professor Midwinter, adviser to the Scottish Executive's finance committee said, "Even if all revenue from North Sea oil and gas had come to Scotland, the country would have had a 'persistent deficit',".
