Hey Mark, thanks for sharing this very effective and practical maneuver. We're used to seeing martial artists throwing fancy kicks and punches, but none of them would work in such close quarters.
I'm a small guy about 5ft 2in. I'm usually faster and stronger than some kids bigger than me, but I would like to learn martial arts to defend myself from the more tactical people in my freshman year highschool. The problem is, I don't know how to start or where to begin. Hopefully future viewers will see this and reply. Please and thank you.
that is something that is a core element of martial arts and self defense... if you cant handle someone bigger than you, then all your training is meaningless....
@MrNoelJMIS Haha, Well, in my dojo I've never been trained by a japanese, even tough I have like 4 different teachers... Plus, It is american ninjutsu, not even the japanese one. :3
What about stepping sideways, or twising to get your head out of the way. Combined with a similer techinque, might even get lucky and have him punch the wall. We learn to sidestep over backing away because then you can strike back.
This technique seems similar to Krav Maga, but looks as if it deals with a situation in a differernt way. Krav Maga has you deflect and redirect. This style has you take it, and leaves an opening wide enough for you to strike. This is somewhat of a better CQC style as it leaves little room for an opponent to move. Only problem is that often times opponants will have weapons. Hand to Hand, this style. Anything vs Hand, Krav Maga. Would like to blend styles though to create my own.
Hello. I am a graduate student at the shodan Shiran Marcio Tigre - Takegawa Budo Ryu Ninjutsu in Brazil for over 10 years and I have to congratulate the video. The technical effects have been well developed in conjunction with the work of Ninjutsu.
hello i am 13 and i am trying to train in the art of ninjutsu i am currently best with a bo staff but i am not that well with close quarters so i got a big question that would help me out can this technique be maneuvered with any other punch or technique, other than the stamp punch?
@F0XF1R3sro I'm also trying to learn ninjutsu and have learned a similar type of technique, from what I see I'd say you could also use this against a roundhouse punch aimed for the temple or the side of the skull. Hope this helps :)
@jbbell1 LOL. Ok I understand your skepticism. I have learnt various martials and including ninjutsu for 4 years. What he is explaining makes sense and happens often when you are against the wall. Putting your arms that way will avoid you being hit in the face and try to counter your attacker. But yeah he does not look credible because of his funny look :)
@hardcoreperkele thats true trying to out punch a boxer would be extreemly unwise, so if your fighting somone with boxing skills all you have to do is take him down and use floor technique to take him out of his comfort zone.
@shinobiwarrior1990 boxers greatest weekness. they only train in punches so they dont lern to deal with techniques such as kicks. Back kick works like a charm against boxers because you turn your back to your oponant. they see it as an opening from reflex and come in to wack you, and get completly caught by the kick Because its naturally a very powerfull kick allmost all of the time they will go down
@raysetiger285 i could not have said it any better myself. many people tend to think the boxer will always have the advantage but nothing could be farther from the truth, becaus as u said urself, a boxer only trains in punching. throw a powerfull at them and they have no idea what to do
@raysetiger285 very true, and from my experiance i find that it is usualy easier to predict what style of punch is coming your way before it is thrown so you have a better idea of how to block or avoid the punch but i think kicks are a bit more elusive. you can almost always tell when someone is going to kick you but its hard to tell what style of kick is going to be coming at you (at least this is true while sparring with a true martial artist)
When the guy did the "follow up technique" at 1:28 i think that the other guy culd just blind the "Ben Stiller" guy by poking his eyes fast and hard. Lol
i actually like this video; i am a martial arts practitioner myself; the movement was so simple and direct which in real combat will really save lives; economy of movements which neutralizes opponents or may inflict maximum damage is always the best option of being in a real fight situation; but, use martial arts only as the last resort; to defend the weak and honor.
@DeathEmo4 This art was developed b4 the modern invention of aikido.Actually aikido has techinques that share a connection 2ninpo tai-jutsu n many other schools of budo..
@hwaycasie30728 you ever try this technique.... it is using body dynamics ..of which you know nothing.... if your arm is too horizontal or vertical... it wont work... try the 45 degree angle... and it does..... i have done it ..casie.... maybe you need to get out more!!
@bobbybushae339 close quarters just means close range, in buildings, hallways, it has nothing to do with arms length. SWAT teams train for close quarters battles, and i've never seen them shooting at each other with the barrels of their guns touching each others chests.
@bobbybushae339 Please, drop the wordplay. The term as used in the video clearly means a restricting, small physical environment, where you don't have room to move. It also implies reality self-defense, protection against sudden attacks, as opposed to a sparring match between evenly matched athletes under 26 rules, sterile environment, and expanded for maximum length.
I'm all for ninjutsu techniques that work. But this is garbage,If he was trying to hit you just move.Or better yet keep your hands up and hit him first.
Wow, a lot of arguing going on, over this video. First let me say, the 9 disciplines/teachings, were schools. They are 9 different styles of ninjutsu. You can get a book and read it for yourself. Not that hard to find. 2nd, doesn't matter what style this guy is teaching, the technique displayed is effective. Especially in a close quarters type of scenario, such as an elevator. 3rd, no one, not bruce lee, or chuck norris, can evade or block every attack. Fighting for real aint like the movies.
bottom line is, if u back a guy into a corner, he will fight hard, especially if he thinks you can beat him, i tech self defence in a wide range of arts, and i can tell u from personal experience, even the weakest, smallest, non-aggressive guy can fight pretty well if frightened or scared, plus this IS ninjutsu, the hands are a distraction, making it harder to hit the target (face) and making the attacker think harder, its about messing with the mind, this is a very basic technique...
NO NINJA would have just thrown both of his hands up like this guy did, why? because the guy throwing the punch could have hooked thee guy's left elbow, thrown him around his back, stomped on his neck and killed him instantly.......so NO this is NOT Ninjutsu
You study ninpo taijutsu? There's no hold hands up about it. Invasive movements--key word movement. To punch an arm has to move. Here he executes a forearm/elbow to soft/vulnerable tissue, and not while the guy's sitting there waiting to "hook the guy's left elbow" and throw him, no, it's while he's completely focused and confident he's about to bury his four knuckles into the ninjutsu practitioners face...this, of course, doesn't workout so well.
dude bottom line, this is NOT ninjutsu and it's NOT even an effective way to stop a punch......if a man throwing a punch even has a background in Jiujitsu, once those hands get thrown up the guy can scoop down and ground and pound the victim to hell and back......I'm no "Ninja" no one really is considering the days of Fuedal Japan are over...and even today's American schools claiming to be real Ninjutsu is just Shorin Ryu Karate....I know my stuff on this subject ......
I studied shorin ryu karate, my friend. The nine schools that make up ninpo taijutsu are 'nothing' like it. The whole manner of doing things is different. I'm not insulting your knowledge of your art, but as far as the recognized schools of Ninpo taijutsu or any of the branch arts that spawned from them (via To-Shin Do) I believe you are horribly misinformed. Your idea as a BJJ practitioner of what stops a punch are yours alone. I know competent BJJ 'rollers' who'd disagree.
their isn't nine schools....it's nine teachings.....once again debunked...those nine teachings are Togakure-Ryu Ninpo Taijutsu,Gyokko-Ryu Kosshijutsu,Kuki Shinden Happo' Bikenjutsu,Koto-Ryu Koppojutsu,Shinden Fudo Ryu Taijutsu,Takagi Yoshin Ryu Jutaijutsu,Gikan Ryu Koppojutsu,Gyokushin Ryu Ninpo and Kumogakure Ryu Ninpo ( just so you know for further reference) those aren't schools.....they're martial arts lineages
Let's not play semantics. Schools can be used synonymously as disciplines, hway. And I know what they are, I've studied kata like from them like "Shi-to," "Ren-yo," "Kubiwa," "Ko-Yoku," etc. etc.. I'm familiar w/ basic biken jutsu from the Kuki lineage--all the kamae and giri, and some of the shoden strategies. I'm well versed in the history of them too, as the art I study I like to know a lot about. Wakushi mo Nihon-go hanashimasu. Thanks for clarifying, but that wasn't the issue.
@scotttealey by what you say then their must be a "Kata School" or a " Side Kick School" or a "Round house kick" school, because those are all "disiplines" when in reality I totally debunked you, you're a glorified script kitty with no formal knowledge or training of or in the martial arts, sorry but you fail.....miserably at that....good day :)
So you're going to tell me that I have no formal training in the art I've spent the past 9 years of my life studying (Both with the American Bujinkan Dojo and then the SKH Quest Centers)?
Whatever that was up there, I have no idea what you were talking about: "Round house school, kata school" ...really, hway...really? LOL What does that mean? :)
I suppose you're doing this to get a rise outta' me, so I'll stop this pointless debate.
pointless yes because you've yet to make a point, fact is their are more than 9 schools, , you failed in confusing it with the 9 disciplines...disciplines and schools are two entirely different things, I would list all these schools publically but their isn't enough characters in this to list them hell their is probably 20 to 30 Ninjutsu schools throughout the world ,if you were a student of Ninjutsu you'd know this although none of them are really traditional Ninjutsu except for one in Okinawa
I am however reasonable to the slim possibility that this guy who out of ignorance tries to attack this unsuspecting victim (and of course he'd have a BJJ background, cause ya know, that's how BJJ guys handle problems, they randomly punch people--not) could, after being elbowed in the neck may completely ignore that and execute a d-leg takedown. Remember what Mr. Russo said, fluid adaptability--the fight continues either way, his back, however is against the wall in this case.
not necessarily, I've seen many times in correctional facilities a guy with no formal training what so ever dominate another inmate with as much precision as a lot of MMA fighters.Once again, debunked.
@BIGJOHNTON80 first of all this guy is wearing a black belt with a white stripe down the middle..... basically that just means he's an apprentice instructor, the man wearing the black belt with the red stripe is more advanced than the guy doing the defensive demonstration....third Shorin Ryu is a type of Karate, NOT Ninjutsu...and on top of that Shorin Ryu only dates back only 77 years ago, original Ninjutsu dates back over a thousand years ago ( in case you didn't know) and btw it's HWAYCASIE
@hwaycasie30728 so you know now how the rankings are awarded do you??? that is Mark Russo and Scott Bragg..... so if you know Shorin ryu... who is Glenn Premru??? lets see what you know!!
@hwaycasie30728 first of all...that aint a white stripe..it is Silver... and he is NOT the apprentice instructor.... you sir are an idiot!!! and the red/black is Scott Bragg... who has been trained by Mr. Russo for about twenty years ...get back to me and Scott teally when you have something intelligent to say.... you dont know crap man!! and i know better than you what and where Shorin ryu comes from..... it has NOTHING to do with Ninjutsu....Okinawa wasnt even part of Japan...according to them
@hwaycasie30728 what you know your stuff??? yeah right..... and Okinawa is HARD style Karate.... NOTHING to do with Ninjutsu.... oy vay...wanna be imposters!!
did you know there is no mention of martial arts in the original scrolls. you should check out the book shinobi soldiers it says everything in there. people who say ninjutsu is a martial art are very wrong.
Mark Ruso - There was 2 flaws I seen in this. I'm not saying it wouldn't work but... if it did fail you'd be in trouble. There was 2 things that I could have done to switch around your counter, and recounter it.
lol@merkins and their ninja fantasies ,some fully grown hairy arsed american men on youtube think the actually ARE ningers!!
karate kid and bruce lee have a lot to answer for, they inspired generations of retarded loner men to dress up in black, make weapons, and creep about in the woods frightening squirrels and old ladies
I think he is right. if a fat guy comes at you just go at his eyes with speed. Tear them out or just poke them really hard. fights finished. spit on him and then break his neck from behind :)
The fatties fall hard and run out of steam..hit 'em and run...they can't catch you and if they try, by the time they get close, they're outta breath and need some O2. I threw a fat bouncer who came from behind and tried to full Nelson me; he was on his back so fast he didn't want to get up. peace.
sorry to break it to you guys... but chuck is just a staged fighter... it's his icon... so he can throw a round house kick, big deal.... my 7 year old brother can throw those along with punches, elbows, and knives
dude chuck norris held up one hella match against his master, the one and only Bruce Lee. Norris can still fight.Well yeah of course in the show walker texas ranger its staged. your a flippin idiot its showbiz.
i agree if this was hatsumi teaching he would be well on the other side of this guy before even trying to do anything. aother thing is that hatsumi would not allow himself to get into this situation.
Dr. Hatsumi is an amazing martial artist but you are unwise to mysticize anyone. Everyone can be caught off guard. Ninjutsu is more about being able to adapt, and if you are always suspecting someone to attack you to where you avoid them altogether, all you accomplish is developing paranoia and a hermit-like spirit. Being able to flow with the waves of adversity and allow your victory to manifest itself (nagare) is a true skill held by advanced martial practitioners, especially Dr. Hatsumi.
this isnt Ninjitsu. If it were proper Ninjitsu u would be evading the attacks even if you didnt have much room to attack. Rule Number one in Bujinkan Ninjitsu is Never get hit in the first place.
Mr. Russo wasn't hit (the weapon was the fist, and it was intercepted), and if you've every studied Koto ryu, the intercepting footwork and striking used by Russo is very common in this art.
Ninjutsu doesn't block but is always striking. Listen to what he's saying. The man is running into the ridgid frame of your superiorly positioned body. So setsu no kata of koto ryu allows the momentum of the pulling attacker to run his face directly into the hardened edge of the defendings crown. The defender uses grabs and inevasive straight to the point movement...like Mr. Russo. He's more ninpo than you know. :)
Most non-professional fighters do. Also, even so trained UFC fighters have this bad habit and yet, guess who still gets stamped in the face by the drawn back punch? :)

their isn't nine schools....it's nine teachings.....once again debunked...those nine teachings are Togakure-Ryu Ninpo Taijutsu,Gyokko-Ryu Kosshijutsu,Kuki Shinden Happo' Bikenjutsu,Koto-Ryu Koppojutsu,Shinden Fudo Ryu Taijutsu,Takagi Yoshin Ryu Jutaijutsu,Gikan Ryu Koppojutsu,Gyokushin Ryu Ninpo and Kumogakure Ryu Ninpo ( just so you know for further reference) those aren't schools.....they're martial arts lineages
hwaycasie30728 2 years ago
Let's not play semantics. Schools can be used synonymously as disciplines, hway. And I know what they are, I've studied kata like from them like "Shi-to," "Ren-yo," "Kubiwa," "Ko-Yoku," etc. etc.. I'm familiar w/ basic biken jutsu from the Kuki lineage--all the kamae and giri, and some of the shoden strategies. I'm well versed in the history of them too, as the art I study I like to know a lot about. Wakushi mo Nihon-go hanashimasu. Thanks for clarifying, but that wasn't the issue.

**"Watakushi mo"
*sigh*...gomenasai...Boku ga masani tsudzurimasen!
LOL.
scotttealey 2 years ago 2
@scotttealey by what you say then their must be a "Kata School" or a " Side Kick School" or a "Round house kick" school, because those are all "disiplines" when in reality I totally debunked you, you're a glorified script kitty with no formal knowledge or training of or in the martial arts, sorry but you fail.....miserably at that....good day :)
hwaycasie30728 2 years ago
So you're going to tell me that I have no formal training in the art I've spent the past 9 years of my life studying (Both with the American Bujinkan Dojo and then the SKH Quest Centers)?
Whatever that was up there, I have no idea what you were talking about: "Round house school, kata school" ...really, hway...really? LOL What does that mean? :)
I suppose you're doing this to get a rise outta' me, so I'll stop this pointless debate.
Ninpo Ikkan Hway,

scotttealey 2 years ago
pointless yes because you've yet to make a point, fact is their are more than 9 schools, , you failed in confusing it with the 9 disciplines...disciplines and schools are two entirely different things, I would list all these schools publically but their isn't enough characters in this to list them hell their is probably 20 to 30 Ninjutsu schools throughout the world ,if you were a student of Ninjutsu you'd know this although none of them are really traditional Ninjutsu except for one in Okinawa
hwaycasie30728 2 years ago
I am however reasonable to the slim possibility that this guy who out of ignorance tries to attack this unsuspecting victim (and of course he'd have a BJJ background, cause ya know, that's how BJJ guys handle problems, they randomly punch people--not) could, after being elbowed in the neck may completely ignore that and execute a d-leg takedown. Remember what Mr. Russo said, fluid adaptability--the fight continues either way, his back, however is against the wall in this case.
scotttealey 2 years ago
not necessarily, I've seen many times in correctional facilities a guy with no formal training what so ever dominate another inmate with as much precision as a lot of MMA fighters.Once again, debunked.

well cassie.... he holds a 4th degree from Glenn Premru...cant get more shorin-ryu than that....
he is all NInja all day!!!
you funny cassie!!!
BIGJOHNTON80 2 years ago
@BIGJOHNTON80 first of all this guy is wearing a black belt with a white stripe down the middle..... basically that just means he's an apprentice instructor, the man wearing the black belt with the red stripe is more advanced than the guy doing the defensive demonstration....third Shorin Ryu is a type of Karate, NOT Ninjutsu...and on top of that Shorin Ryu only dates back only 77 years ago, original Ninjutsu dates back over a thousand years ago ( in case you didn't know) and btw it's HWAYCASIE
hwaycasie30728 2 years ago
@hwaycasie30728 so you know now how the rankings are awarded do you??? that is Mark Russo and Scott Bragg..... so if you know Shorin ryu... who is Glenn Premru??? lets see what you know!!
BIGJOHNTON80 1 year ago
@hwaycasie30728 first of all...that aint a white stripe..it is Silver... and he is NOT the apprentice instructor.... you sir are an idiot!!! and the red/black is Scott Bragg... who has been trained by Mr. Russo for about twenty years ...get back to me and Scott teally when you have something intelligent to say.... you dont know crap man!! and i know better than you what and where Shorin ryu comes from..... it has NOTHING to do with Ninjutsu....Okinawa wasnt even part of Japan...according to them
BIGJOHNTON80 1 year ago
@hwaycasie30728 what you know your stuff??? yeah right..... and Okinawa is HARD style Karate.... NOTHING to do with Ninjutsu.... oy vay...wanna be imposters!!
BIGJOHNTON80 1 year ago
did you know there is no mention of martial arts in the original scrolls. you should check out the book shinobi soldiers it says everything in there. people who say ninjutsu is a martial art are very wrong.

In advanced Ninjitsu, a strike can be a block and a block can be a strike, it takes practice in melting them together as one.

Mark Ruso - There was 2 flaws I seen in this. I'm not saying it wouldn't work but... if it did fail you'd be in trouble. There was 2 things that I could have done to switch around your counter, and recounter it.

thank you for the info.
I think he is right. if a fat guy comes at you just go at his eyes with speed. Tear them out or just poke them really hard. fights finished. spit on him and then break his neck from behind :)
addab 2 years ago
or just throw his happy meal into the road and watch him get run over
kansazkid 2 years ago
The fatties fall hard and run out of steam..hit 'em and run...they can't catch you and if they try, by the time they get close, they're outta breath and need some O2. I threw a fat bouncer who came from behind and tried to full Nelson me; he was on his back so fast he didn't want to get up. peace.

i agree if this was hatsumi teaching he would be well on the other side of this guy before even trying to do anything. aother thing is that hatsumi would not allow himself to get into this situation.
CrisisShasO 2 years ago
Hatsumi.
scotttealey 2 years ago 3
well said buddy i agree.....
adamidus 2 years ago
this isnt Ninjitsu. If it were proper Ninjitsu u would be evading the attacks even if you didnt have much room to attack. Rule Number one in Bujinkan Ninjitsu is Never get hit in the first place.
WalloNintendoNerd 2 years ago
Mr. Russo wasn't hit (the weapon was the fist, and it was intercepted), and if you've every studied Koto ryu, the intercepting footwork and striking used by Russo is very common in this art.

PXG013 2 years ago 2
yeah, I agree, this isn't a very good block. And it ISN'T ninjutsu at all.
neji277 2 years ago
Ninjutsu doesn't block but is always striking. Listen to what he's saying. The man is running into the ridgid frame of your superiorly positioned body. So setsu no kata of koto ryu allows the momentum of the pulling attacker to run his face directly into the hardened edge of the defendings crown. The defender uses grabs and inevasive straight to the point movement...like Mr. Russo. He's more ninpo than you know. :)
scotttealey 2 years ago 2
Does an attacker draw his fist back like that before striking?
owenspence 2 years ago
Most non-professional fighters do. Also, even so trained UFC fighters have this bad habit and yet, guess who still gets stamped in the face by the drawn back punch? :)
