If you are talking about the Venom level, that stage can only be properly played on an MSX1 system. For some reason, anything higher than MSX1 just fails at rendering the level properly.
In fact, to get the good ending, at least on the original MSX sytem, you needed 2 game cartridges: Salamander (inserted on Slot 1) and Nemesis 2 (inserted on Slot 2). This way, you get and extra level in Salamander AND the good ending...
The great music of the game made it worthwile to play; although it was frustrating as h*ll to play. This last stage wasn't the most difficult, imo it was the green level with the dimming light
Actually, extend play loops the levels over again from the beginning at a harder difficulty. In the other Gradius/Salamander games, a new loop would start automatically, but here you press F5 as an option to start them.
Good job with Zelos, you actually managed to keep all 4 options intact for the other boss (final boss?). So you're saying after you got the crystal breeze, everytime you shot an enemy, bullets appeared? Those stupid suicide bullets, makes taking out the enemy up close even more dangerous than it looks...
Yes, the homing missiles are silly in this level. But they helps a lot so we can forgive them !! :-p
And yes, I tlaked about Operation X, the secret mission you got with Nemesis 2 in slot 2. With this combination, you got an extra level, and an extra artefact, the crystal breeze, you need to defeat Slamander in htis special level. I f you managed to do that, you got the real end, with succesful accomplishement.
I've managed to capture the crystal breeze using an emultator with 2 roms loaded. Ill try and upload a video of it. After you capture it the game gets crazily hard! every time you shoot something bombs are thrown at you.

Respect!
I never got so far. Too difficult. Those were the great days of using arcade joysticks, 16 colors and an MSX1.
Nice to see again on youtube.

that is a very unique way of unlocking something

You don't have to have an original MSX console, dude. Just an MSX good emulator like BlueMSX; insert rom1 as Salamander and rom2 as Nemesis-2.
I finished it in the original system and in the emulator ( a good ending, of course).

This ending sucked. you actually LOSE. first game to see that. oh wait, I forgot about young merlin.

actually u can get a good ending on this

Such a lame ending. :)
I find the music of the end demo a lot more suitable as music for a level, not storytelling.

Does that "extend play" mean that there is an additional level after the "final" one?

That final boss is ridiculous when you've got the crystal breeze... the green things like to point-blank you with suicide bullets.
Also, there is another prediction that you can get at 2:15 from that dispenser.

At times like 1:30, you can see why homing missiles are awful in this game.
