8.38 min ... i am doing japanese martial arts since more than 15 years.. not aikido, but i like the way to move in aikido. BUT what i never will understand..whats the sense of moves like in 8.38 . soke holds his arm up..looks like stupid uke runs in there and smashes himself down to just make soke happy..
@MrShadesky I could not agree more. I continually tell my students that earning a black belt is simply a signal that you intend to become a serious student. Even though I am a Jujitsu practitioner and instructor I have a tremendous respect for O'Sensei Morihei Ueshiba. He understood.
its hilarious how some ppl think that aikido isnt effective i bet if you throw as many punches and or kicks at any black blet he will throw you on your ass pin you and then break your arm if he or she wanted to.
@Kenshin1080 the belt often doesn't reveal the martialist. a Black belt in my town has been knocked out with one direct frontal punch only by a simple, untrained camionist
@suissecarnifex Who are you for telling that? I see you're swiss. Me too. I hope you speak french.
Comment tu te permets d'insulter cet art martial?
J'espère sincèrement que tu étais complètement bourré quand tu as dit ça.
@suissecarnifex Well thats why aikido is different from any other martial art, aikido is not only a martial art, you could even practice aikido without having stepped on the tatami even once. But a brainless person like you probably wont understand. Do you even know what Aiki means? It is not about fighting, thats for sure. So all your comments right back at ya
So interesting as a history piece. Shintoism mixed with nationalism, a 'japanisation' of martial arts. Nice old fella too, what a weird life he must have had, so different from ours today eh..
There are certian levels in development of a martial art practitioner. Most people don't go further than the rough bully/fighter level. They can't refine their force. How are they expected to understand the aiki principles? It's through fighting that we reach this which is not about fighting at all. Those who remain at the fighting level, laugh at aikido and call it a dance and fake. It's not aikido's problem. It's their problem
In an interview Shoji Nishio reported : "At that time, a former Karate sensei of the Butokukai named Toyosaku Sodeyama who was running Konishi Sensei’s dojo and also teaching there came up to me and said: “I met someone who is like a ‘phantom’. I couldn’t strike him even once.” I was amazed that there was someone that even Sodeyama Sensei couldn’t strike. It was O-Sensei.
@aikigeorge3 Not sure where you get the idea that "very few Aikido people can fight," but your premise is unrealistic. Anyone who has studied Aikido or Tai Chi seriously knows that in a real fight you don't "use" these arts; you use anything necessary. Training in such arts is intended to build resourcefulness by creating a quiet, open and confident attitude. People who train in them are unlikely to get in a fight in the first place. If you want to fight, join the marines.
@aikigeorge3 very few Aikido people can actually fight & certainly if all they use is Aikido they will be very easy to beat in a real fight by anyone who has studied realistic martial arts. Aikido is like Tai Chi, sure a few can use it in a fight but very few! DON'T rely on Aikido in a real situation, go learn other things. EVERY SINGLE Aikido demo I've seen is 1) Nicely choreographed like a dance with ukemi trained to take falls 2) NEVER any realistic attacks.
@CloudsBeyond As you said, they're "demos". If you want to see how Aikido is applied in combat situations, look for Steven Seagal training Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida in their fights for UFC Middle Weight Championship and Light Heavy Weight Championship bouts this year. Seagal teaches both fighters the concept of "irimi" with the follow up "atemi". Aikido demos are not fights; they demostrate the Aiki principle using martial forms; the principle of Harmonisation, and peaceful resolution.
@CloudsBeyond if i will fight anyone with knowledge on 'realistic martial arts' , ill use mixed styles. realistic fights happens on streets, and on streets there is no rule. you can use everything for survival

@senseilance I sure did, a long time ago. Seagal is being bashed on for taking credit on Anderson wins. Seagals skilla are choreograph screen play scenarios. His techniques are purposelessly telegraphed to look good in his dojo and on screen. His defense reactions won't look that swiftly in a real life confrontation with a pro. I strongly believe these allege skills are proposed to fight unskilled fighters rather than skilled opponents.

@Wolfsbane909 you assume that he would fight you? it is more likely that he would just avoid your attack until you collasped in fatigue and frustration and then gently ask you what were you thinking?
@aikigeorge3 yeah most likely, but still for my fight club match I would choose Ueshiba just simply because his legendary. In response to his question if he were to ask that, I would reply "I am attacking, someone has to!"
true humility comes through the will to truely pass knowledge on, without interferring in the process ... it was really good to see O'Sensei teaching the kids. what a teacher!

Aikido the way of behaving like a stupid pet..
Attacking from a unrealistic Distance
Attacking like a total morron, attack and freeze, ore worse run into the opponent
Stick to the wrist and wait for the throw or even better behave like a rhino and just run towards the opponent and pass him whatever happens..
Never ever throw a second punch that would spoil the magic gay aikimoment..
Just do anything to behave like a total unrealistic fighter. Based on this behaviour Aikido works just fine
