hi.. I am going to college next year and I haven't decided yet what to study.. I love architecture but I suppose you all know about the huge problem with the unemployment these days.. I do have other talents other than architecture but I've always wanted to do architecture so I don't really know whether I should risk and do architecture or study mathematics.. I'd appreciate it if you could give me some advise on this:)
When do you calculate the load bearing capacities of the materials, or the stress points? Or do you even do that? Do you (or architects in general) hire engineers for that?
@Montops The client hires the engineer, in this case the Architect will give the requirements and what they feel best suits the design of the structure, the structural engineer will calculate loadings of all shapes and forms i.e from foundations to the finishes and work out whats best practically and financially for the client, in a very very small microscopic even nut shell. hope this helps
One should realise that this is merely scratching the surface of what Architecture is about. Doug has done an ok job in outlining the process and this was just a quick exercise. The design of even a small house can take many different stages to get to the best solution. This video looks at only one solution to an imaginary site. To say his thinking process is ugly is just silly: For my last project I made literally hundreds of sketches. The process is important but it's the solution counts.
pilotis isnt that good idea because they weak the stability of house by changing the gravity center of the construction . So it isnt just designing the perfect dreaming home , as it is materializing it and feel safe in it .

Very nice solution considering the lot. The "teepee" element adds a nice juxtaposition to the angularity of the house. Very well paced video. With all that stainless, the cost per foot must have been pretty steep! Once again, nice work.
you think you can do another one but for me?? please!!!
for a 2- story house I am infatuated with the internal spacing similar to those of a 2 story studio/loft apartment. As for materials I love the thick horizontal lines from stained wood, and the coolness of steel and stone. Something equivalent to the robie house. but yeah, how would you design the internal spacing of a loft apartment, yet in size of a regular house?
@freesraf You are studying architecture? Words of advice to you "Change your major to something else" before you ends up eating shit like 99% of architects does !!!!

I think its an elegant design, and besides, the last word should come from kelly, no matter if it has 4 stories or whatever, if she like it then its good. But the most important is that the videot transmit the idea about designing like an architect

@vip3r0xxx If you live in some other country and have large family and mostly their relative live together with them than a four stories house would made sense. I don't see any four stories house here in US unless it is by the ocean view and it is a rental property. My home has three stories but I don't consider its three stories, because it has a basement. I have 1st Floor, 2nd Floor and a Basement, which is not bad to go up and down stairs cause i hardly ever go down to basement.
@PaddyANS What massage home boy ??? Being an Architect and design a four stories home is a damn impractical. I sure want to see his wife and him living in that house. His wife will damn sure divorce him in less than one month of living in there for walking upstairs and downstair at lease 10 times a day. She will sure gets thunder thigh and buns of steal.....LOL
Hey, Doug Pat, I am 13 years old I studly Architecture in the United Kingdom.
And i would like you to draw me a dream home that i would like the house should be next to the beach and a very nice beach view ( like a Huge glass window) and then like have 3 floors and in each floor must include at least 3 windows. Then a garage and have nice stairs to the front doors with a big garden ( 2 acres ) and my Favorited material is wood with steel metal and normal metal and just send me the video.
I can't remember the last time I heard someone make reference to the Marseilles block. Drawing a perspective with a Mayline parallel bar and triangle is even more rare. Great to see this celebration of both. Keep these videos coming.
I thought it was hilarious that 2011TOMCAT felt it necessary to mention he's not an architect.
This is a beautiful expression of the design process in the short and limited time frame that youtube offers. I hope to have more time to view your videos in the future (should the life of an architecture student allow)
im in first year architecture and i want o ask u a simple question about this design how will people like in such a narrow building and when i designed a narrow building the professor told me that it wasnt comfortable to people to live in :S rather than that AWESOME elevation :D
thats what i call as an architect myself "architecture for eating" meaning you do that kind of "works" just to pay your rent and survive...not really to make a point or help society´s issues even not making architecture that last through the ages and so on...thats just my opinion, greetings and regards from south america....
oh my god. is this real? HOW can you even think to make a video tutorial on 'how to sketch'?? everyone does it differently (just think that you can sketch even if u arent a good drawer). its just pointless. and what about modern architecture? i think Le C.invented much, but produced huge damages in local architecture everywhere on the planet.and his "design" principles are nowdays clearly old, artificial and unnatural. unitè d'abitation is just a chicken cage.and who cares about the less is more
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Sorry, I can design a better home for Kelly and more practical than this and I am not an architect. A home with four stories is not a practical home unless you have an elevator in it. I have friend that has three stories home and walking up and down stair is a pain in the ass and your knees. You can get thunder thighs and buns of steel for sure if you live in this house. LOL
@2011TOMCAT A 4 stories house is indeed practical. Try thinking of a country with limited space/area, how do architects deal with this problem? There's a thing called "human scale". It's what all architects have to study in order to build the "house" and everything in it with the size in accordance with the users' lives. So if the architect can measure and design the stairs that you can walk on without feeling "pushed", then I guess 4 stories shouldn't be that much of a problem.
@2011TOMCAT ...I live in a 4 sories house with no elevator and am just fine with it. Every single house should be designed on the characteristics of these who will live in it: if you build for a mc donald fan that weights, say, 150 kg you will definitely put an elevator...
@2011TOMCAT im sorry but the i think that the national building code says that u can only put elev. when your building is upto 15m(5 storey) high, also, as we all know elevetors are very expensive!XD,,, but to tell you there are other solutions like shortening the reser of the stair for going up easily. And no offense but i dont believe that you can design a better home than a profesional arch. bcuz ,,, you dont know antropometrics and the proper space req, for a house,.,sory n thx
@2011TOMCAT by the way im an architecture student and i hav very much respect to Arch. Doug Pat,.,., i still hav much to learn,.,., thats why i always watch his videos,., :)
@2011TOMCAT and to add it up, you dont hav to put rooms which you will always go in to at the 4th floor ,, you can put it on the 2nd.. and just put some room that you are not always gonna use at the 3rd and 4th flr. like for example game rooms or fitness gyms..those kinds of room that your just gonna use once or twice a week so that you will not always get tired every day,.,.you see there are so many solutions to this problem without spending alot of money,.,., :)
not sure if the current title is your best approach. Maybe "how an architect designs" would've worked better - this gives the impression that you are teaching non-architects a cool little insight into how to ditch the costly designer and have their d-i-y home.
I have to admit, your discourse is pretty well built and simplified, but maybe that's the whole danger of it. It's really not that simple - next thing you know, we'll have "HOW TO OPERATE LIKE A SURGEON" on youtube, and we're all set..
@ashmerge I hope that our skills as architects(I'm one) should be what would defend our profession; not cowardly behavior and defensive remarks. I'm not afraid of showing "non-architects" how I do my work, the same way that anybody can see how Lance Armstrong does it. This exhibitive behavior does not make our profession "exposed" or "easy", but on the contrary, makes it more desirable, and accessible.
Snob architects that hide what they do create animosity & repel those that are interested.
This is just a question but if an architect was designing something like this would they be have to work out how like the deck would stay supported, or would someone else do that?
Interesting short video about the general design process.
But who would want to live in that concrete monstrosity of Corbusier? A lot of modern architecture looks very ugly and unhuman. Architects are irresponsible to mutilate cities with such abstract and lifeless looking buildings just to satisfy their own egos.
This video very helpful and inspiring.....for those who want to become an architect someday.....I also want to be an architect someday so I started to design buildings and houses at this age (15).....would you mind if I show you some of my designs?
It maybe not that good But I will try my best to make it real someday...thanks for this video =)
Hello Doug Pat, I appreciate that you have invested your time to create these videos. People will always have opinions. Positive and Negative. For that reason, I understand why you didn't allow for comments before. It is distracting and you should go back to no comments. You shouldn't waste your time defending your videos but instead take that time to create more please. I appreciate you. Thank you.
Mr. Doug, I'm 14 and want to be an architect. I hope not to bother you, but could you make a video on life as an architect? plus, I have a dream house for you to design. I like Napa Valley Homes, but I live in vegas. Think you can incorporate the strip view into a original Napa Valley Home??
Cut the racists crap out please. Are you not sick of this? It is human nature to segregate in both good and bad ways, and sometimes people don't really mean things in the bad way when it seems that way. I'm sure any decent person that can at least write quality English in a comment would for sure not mean to be racist. Thank you for your time, and thank you howtoarchitect for your wonderful videos :) !!!
I love this, but I'm not a strong sketcher. I know you said that you don't have to be, but it seems so vital when watching your YouTube video. And subscribed :)
@decapattack Well architects use both paper and software... In paper you can express your ideas faster and then you translate those ideas to some software like autocad to make them seem real. Hope my english is not as bad as I think.
horrible! You had a spot on the beach and you did a communist building block. GG! Just cover it in stainless steel, sure, and ignore the salty corroding air and the reflected sunlight plus the overheating effect inside. Sure, just plant a 4story tall BOX ON PILLARS ON THE BEACH.
She likes indian stuff so i just threw a tent shape on that box! WOAH! Intense design dude.
Do not take this seriously people.
p.s. : Take a walk around ex-communist countries. See if you'll love Corbu then.
... i must say this is unexpected. im not trying to be offensive but i think is ffensive for us who really design. and its not an easy way to work as u have painted it.
Doug, I am currently a 14 year old Freshman, I've been seeking what job I think would be best for me as a future career, and I've been greatly influenced by you to become an Architect. I would like to thank you for your very wide decision of architectural tutorial videos, as they are very helpful to beginners, such as myself, and even the experts could grab a few tips from these. (: I'm very glad you've decided to make these videos, please, keep it up! Kind regards, -Corey
I stumbled across your video and thought it highly presumptuous that anyone would attempt "How to design like an architect" in 5:20. But you did it by cutting out all the "fat" leaving the bones and skeletal essence intact. I don't care if it's Corbu or Wright or tipis or earthquakes (Eisenman) who inspired your design, the point you made was "process". The danger in architecture today is that it too often slavishly follows those who did not "dig" deep enough into their souls to do their best.
@jhgewalt Thank you. It is highly presumptuous. I made the video to simply de-mystify things a bit. It's incredibly condensed, very much dumbed down and not representative of the hard work an architect does. With that said, I need to make things simple in order to understand them. I did the video for that reason. Thanks for the note:) Kind Regards, Doug
I even have laught the way you wrote it. I needed four years to become one after years of discovering my design skills while asking myself with to do with my skills.
You have tremendous drawing skills i envy that. Thanks for posting all those interesting videos about architecture. I've watch'em all, they're all great.
One of the things that seduces my eyes when i'm watching your videos is the way you sketch, you are a very talented architect!!
the house looks nice...but im not a big fan of the international style...but very nice...and the tutorials are very helpful, especially for starters... :)
Le Corbusier's idea of the "compact city" was where most of the social problems in places like London came from where the large social housing complexes created dens of social disorder. Corbusier concentrates too much on the positive space of buildings but not on creating positive space in the spaces left behind. The result leads to people ignoring his areas of recreation between buildins that were supposed to prevent these social problems.
Thanks, you have great videos. Im 15 and working my way up to be a architect, you're videos gives me the urge to work harder to be who I want to be! :D
I am sorry to hear that Le Corbusier is your inspiration because when I look at his work it is stark to the point of being un-human. My Architect of choice is Frank Lloyd Wright. I would argue with you that both architects did believe in minimalism but I believe Wright's work introduced a sense of space that allowed for natural materials with a feeling of openness and being sheltered. Corbusier created boxes. Wright's structures were integrated with the land. I am an Architect of 20 years.
@ratface4az . Careful, Minimalism came after the modern movement. My history teacher (and architectural theory) really slapped my knuckles about these kind of things. If you are supposed to be culturally educated, and have these kinds of discussion, the first thing is that you know what you are talking about.
@MrMartinhedin Sir: I was educated at Wright school from 1980-1985 and an Architect with the Wright firm 1990-1996 with a total of over 20 years as an Architect. I say again, Corbusier created boxes. Wright's buildings have a sense of space flowing out and in with nature. The Architects believed in mininalism but Corbusier took it to the extreme and did nothing to allow nature to be intigrated with the design. I am talking Architecture - not the high brow of being culturally educated.
@ratface4az Sorry, I read that you where a student in your twenties, I am a student myself, and this is what my teacher said 2 years ago. I didn't mean do attack you about engaging in discussions, just wanted to give you a tip (as a fellow student ;) ) that its important to use the concepts right. Still you used the term minimalism, which is incorrect, since its a movement from the 60-70's. But I get you point. :)
@MrMartinhedin Aren't we all students regardless of age and education? Meanwhile, no offense taken. Just light hearted discussion and I get your point if someone wants to pigeon hole "minimalisn" into a time frame so that they can understand it, but my GOD. If you know architecture, take a look at what Wright was doing in Oak Park compared to what was around at the time. Take a look at Guggenhiem NYC and the buildings around it. 60-70s minimalism? Wright was before that - died in 1959. Thanks.
@ratface4az . Well another thought, maybe I am wrong. I am swedish and I study in Spain, and maybe my english isn't good enough (have for a while been mixing three languages together). I guess you are expressing yourself correctly, since Le Corbusier & Co where talking about the concepts that later where used and incorporated into the minimalist movement.
@ratface4az Have you actually been to the Unité d'Habitation in Marseille? If not I suggest you visit it. It's more run down than it used to be, but the design is brilliant. There is tons of light in every apartment and a true feeling of openness, despite limited space. Corbusier didn't create boxes.

I can't remember the last time I heard someone make reference to the Marseilles block. Drawing a perspective with a Mayline parallel bar and triangle is even more rare. Great to see this celebration of both. Keep these videos coming.
I thought it was hilarious that 2011TOMCAT felt it necessary to mention he's not an architect.

thats what i call as an architect myself "architecture for eating" meaning you do that kind of "works" just to pay your rent and survive...not really to make a point or help society´s issues even not making architecture that last through the ages and so on...thats just my opinion, greetings and regards from south america....

oh my god. is this real? HOW can you even think to make a video tutorial on 'how to sketch'?? everyone does it differently (just think that you can sketch even if u arent a good drawer). its just pointless. and what about modern architecture? i think Le C.invented much, but produced huge damages in local architecture everywhere on the planet.and his "design" principles are nowdays clearly old, artificial and unnatural. unitè d'abitation is just a chicken cage.and who cares about the less is more

LOL

@howtoarchitect lol, I wanna see a comparison study. Do people with 4 or more story houses (and no elevator) develop bund of steel?
QuantumProphet 6 months ago
@2011TOMCAT A 4 stories house is indeed practical. Try thinking of a country with limited space/area, how do architects deal with this problem? There's a thing called "human scale". It's what all architects have to study in order to build the "house" and everything in it with the size in accordance with the users' lives. So if the architect can measure and design the stairs that you can walk on without feeling "pushed", then I guess 4 stories shouldn't be that much of a problem.

@2011TOMCAT My house has three stories. Oh, and I'm not an architect, by the way... Not yet anyway. LOL

It's really not that simple - next thing you know, we'll have "HOW TO OPERATE LIKE A SURGEON" on youtube, and we're all set..
ashmerge 10 months ago 2
@ashmerge I hope that our skills as architects(I'm one) should be what would defend our profession; not cowardly behavior and defensive remarks. I'm not afraid of showing "non-architects" how I do my work, the same way that anybody can see how Lance Armstrong does it. This exhibitive behavior does not make our profession "exposed" or "easy", but on the contrary, makes it more desirable, and accessible.
Snob architects that hide what they do create animosity & repel those that are interested.

Interesting short video about the general design process.
But who would want to live in that concrete monstrosity of Corbusier? A lot of modern architecture looks very ugly and unhuman. Architects are irresponsible to mutilate cities with such abstract and lifeless looking buildings just to satisfy their own egos.

The danger in architecture today is that it too often slavishly follows those who did not "dig" deep enough into their souls to do their best.
jhgewalt 1 year ago 2
@jhgewalt Thank you. It is highly presumptuous. I made the video to simply de-mystify things a bit. It's incredibly condensed, very much dumbed down and not representative of the hard work an architect does. With that said, I need to make things simple in order to understand them. I did the video for that reason. Thanks for the note:) Kind Regards, Doug

Le Corbusier's idea of the "compact city" was where most of the social problems in places like London came from where the large social housing complexes created dens of social disorder. Corbusier concentrates too much on the positive space of buildings but not on creating positive space in the spaces left behind. The result leads to people ignoring his areas of recreation between buildins that were supposed to prevent these social problems.

primlinden 1 year ago
I am sorry to hear that Le Corbusier is your inspiration because when I look at his work it is stark to the point of being un-human. My Architect of choice is Frank Lloyd Wright. I would argue with you that both architects did believe in minimalism but I believe Wright's work introduced a sense of space that allowed for natural materials with a feeling of openness and being sheltered. Corbusier created boxes. Wright's structures were integrated with the land. I am an Architect of 20 years.
ratface4az 1 year ago 5
@ratface4az . Careful, Minimalism came after the modern movement. My history teacher (and architectural theory) really slapped my knuckles about these kind of things. If you are supposed to be culturally educated, and have these kinds of discussion, the first thing is that you know what you are talking about.
MrMartinhedin 10 months ago
@MrMartinhedin Sir: I was educated at Wright school from 1980-1985 and an Architect with the Wright firm 1990-1996 with a total of over 20 years as an Architect. I say again, Corbusier created boxes. Wright's buildings have a sense of space flowing out and in with nature. The Architects believed in mininalism but Corbusier took it to the extreme and did nothing to allow nature to be intigrated with the design. I am talking Architecture - not the high brow of being culturally educated.
ratface4az 10 months ago
@ratface4az Sorry, I read that you where a student in your twenties, I am a student myself, and this is what my teacher said 2 years ago. I didn't mean do attack you about engaging in discussions, just wanted to give you a tip (as a fellow student ;) ) that its important to use the concepts right. Still you used the term minimalism, which is incorrect, since its a movement from the 60-70's. But I get you point. :)
MrMartinhedin 10 months ago
@MrMartinhedin Aren't we all students regardless of age and education? Meanwhile, no offense taken. Just light hearted discussion and I get your point if someone wants to pigeon hole "minimalisn" into a time frame so that they can understand it, but my GOD. If you know architecture, take a look at what Wright was doing in Oak Park compared to what was around at the time. Take a look at Guggenhiem NYC and the buildings around it. 60-70s minimalism? Wright was before that - died in 1959. Thanks.
ratface4az 10 months ago
