  • People say that MV will be banned everywhere in 2016!!!! :(

  • ...hippy idiots...now they outlaw incandescent bulbs and force use of Hg vapour florescent screw-in type bulbs...which in sheer number of disposal as they wear-out...it's all over nonsense essentially...each greenweenie graduating college-class of psychotic/neurotic bureau-boss destined nazi-enviroquacks...has it in their mind-memes' grand scheme of things of out-nazi-ing their predecessor(s) in their (dis)respective bureaus-of-assholiness...as they are appointed above the protests of taxpayers.

  • I like the "Energy Star" route. I do like the daylight 6000K fluorescent. The LED Lights are also a good thing to use too.

  • By 2006 in the UK, they banne MV lamps, all we have to remind us of the BEST MERCURY LIGHT SOURCE is it's brother the MBF lamp

  • By 2006 in the #UK, they banne MV lamps, all we have to remind us of the BEST MERCURY LIGHT SOURCE is it's brother the MBF lamp

  • I think the ban is ridiculous. Because I recently bought a mercury vapor light for my yard (home depot had old stock so I bought like 5 bulbs and a 175w fixture) the average light output is 24000 hours as compared to metal halide 10000 hours. I turn the light on all the time to show support for people like us who want the ban reversed. Keep up the good work!

  • I do not give a crap like my son simposizer (I see posted this on my fb wall :-) I hate the new bulll shiiiite they replaced them with; THEY light up my whole bedroom + the whole dam town with two of these bulbs. THEN one of these placed on the main rode--Rte.30 and That one light; lights like the whole street block into the square of town looks like daylight. I know we had these colored lights in town 10 miles to the west of us; + they drive people crazy. Heard the color does this.. :( DUH!!

  • Yeah I hate this ban. Our town, New Oxford, PA is now changing all the MV lights in mass to HPS because of this! Crazy! We actually have a couple old OV 15s and OV 25 lights still left I want to get a hold of before they are scrapped! Darn this communistic bull crap! - Any collectors in New Oxford? :-\

  • Seriously???!!! A god-damn Ban against some motherfucking lightbulbs?! Holy shit!!!

  • I want to see a ban-ban, putting an end to bans and prohibitions, enough is enough. The government has no place to tell us what kind of light bulbs to use.

  • I don't know why everyone loves MV so much. HPS is 100% more efficient, and MV has that incredibly stupid problem of the bulbs getting darker with age while still consuming the same amount of power. The streetlights in my town are still MV, and they are horrible! All different brightnesses, and that garish blue-green color. MV's efficiency goes down horribly with age, and I would bet that many of the ballasts to run them have a normal power factor: a150 watt lamp really uses over 300 watts.

  • @edisonphono1 You're a dumbass. An MV lamp will burn for 24,000 hours before it dims out. Your stupid utility company should change the bulbs more often. What do HPS lamps do when they burn out? Light up, then shut off...light up, then shut off...over and over again. Plus, I'd rather see objects in shades of blue-green (under which the human eye can see more sharply) than monochromatic orange. The purpose of street-lighting is for people to be able to SEE.

  • @brianfromLI If that's the only purpose of street lighting, then HPS is clearly the better choice since the sodium D line is almost exactly at peak sensitivity for the eye. Plus, with pressure broadening, HPS has more color rendering capabilities than MV. CRI of MV (uncoated) is about 19. HPS is usually 21 or 22. Monochromatic, huh? And if HPS bulbs cycle, at least you know they need replacing. It's obvious that way. LPS is monochromatic, not HPS.

  • @edisonphono1 Furthermore, a 100 watt MV set-up uses exactly 110 watts of energy. Do your homework before you make stupid, uninformed comments. Or, better yet, do your homework for school...you might learn something, child...

  • @brianfromLI Really? I doubt that your average MV ballast has a 90% P factor. A ballast without a capacitor or some other device for increasing power factor will use more power. It works that way for HPS and Fluorescent lights, so I doubt it'd be different for MV. All magnetic ballasts are inefficient without a capacitor, so unless there are electronic mercury vapor ballasts, then any ballast without a capacitor will be using 2 to 3 times the amount of power as a normal power factor ballast.

  • It's a shame that they have been banned. I have been collecting these along with fixtures and bulbs also HPS and Halides since I was 7... Anyone interested in buying any from me can email me on here, I have about 10 Mercury Vapor bulbs ranging from 75 watts to 250 watts, also a self ballasted one that runs on regular household current with a medium base.

  • I've always loves MV lamps (and lp Na lamps) and recently found a shop that still sells them. vv vv vv döt needabulb döt cöm Hope that helps! Just ordered some myself!

  • @Romenadan Dear Roman, The legislation in the United States, which David talks about says no manufacture of sales. This would include the importation of any such light bulb whether by mail order or by carrying in as hand luggage. A similar ban is in place for another type of light bulb affecting the European Union, and "any contraband light bulbs will be ceased and the law-breaker jailed!" . Funny isn't it, how light bulbs are the new taboo. Cheers. from, del-boy.
  • You do in fact get less light for your watt with mercury vapor than with other HID sources, but they are pretty efficient compared to other means. T12 fluorescent regardless of the wattage uses a crapload of energy to get the same amount of light as a 175 watt phosphor coated mercury vapor, and the combined amount of mercury in those tubes will be considerably more too. If they are really worried about how much of a pig they are, they should research them instead of these unnecessary bans.

  • Will I still be able to get these on ebay? I know many online stores still sell the actual raw ballasts (think ballast kit with transformer and capacitor)

  • lol eat my voltage

  • Infringing on your freedom. . Thats fucked i am just hearing about this /

  • @StartswithASeed I agree completely! They banned the fixtures and ballasts already and they are now trying to ban the bulbs as well. I wrote a petition opposing the bulb ban. I posted another video promoting the petition and linking to it.

  • companies not allowing them for commercial use, but who has the right to tell what you can do in the PRIVACY of YOUR ressidence. Ppl need to stop infringing on others beliefs lifes health religion etc. Iam canadian and if you read on the department of justice website about charter of rights. Iam intitled to use Cannabis as a sacrement althoughth some law enforcement agencies believ its there right to infringe on my rights. Who the fuck dose one man enforcing the law get the idea he is the law

  • why r they banning these lights and not the bulbs?

  • @coondogtheman1234 It was about so called efficiency, which I don't fully believe. They cited MV being the "least efficient" out of the 3 HID light sources. However, they are trying to ban the bulbs now too. I wrote an article and petition opposing the bulb ban, which I have linked and promoted in another video.

  • @DavidFromAE

well the bulbs arn't they useless without the lights? and these draw 175 watts of juice so you are right they are not efficient in these times they arnt.

  • @DavidFromAE

Good for you, Dave! Glad to see there are other activists against the ban besides me. Also, I think another reason they're banning mercury lights is merely due to the name "mercury'. Everybody's (EPA) all up in arms about the use of mercury in anything...they're all just flippin' out about it. It's all friggen politics now.

  • Another reason for alot of bans is pressure from big buisness. Look at Cannabis its athreat to alot of industries Medicine is the big one. Not in California its medicine and i believ 60,000 strong patients using aswell. So iam suggesting that these lights were vbanned for others profit. Do they casue helth hazrd or need special treatment befor being tossed when they expire? Look at the CFL bullshit we have to go threw not lmao. And we ALWAYS HAD LEDS why are they coming out now lmao.

  • @StartswithASeed

well the CFL lights are bright and efficient but they have mercury in them (Hg).

LEDs don't have anything toxic in them I think, but they are not bright like regular lights and they are pretty expensive b/c of the R&D that goes into making them into lightbulb shape and making tiny white LEDs run safely off 115VAC. LEDs are the best kind of lights on the planet but making them work in standard wall sockets is hard and expensive.

  • Come to Russia and buy it right here in every shop - I've just today bought 1000w mercury vapor for about $30. If you be lucky you can find never-used 2000w, but it will be old because factory not produce it about 10 years. Also we got a lot of mercury-tungsten combined lamps (they don't need any starting device - just plug to 220v and it lights) with 180-1000w power. :)))

  • @konfederator hey thats great ! i hope they do not ban them in Russia. btw am form there.

  • Wish i could find these i love them

  • florecent lights are also MV lamps but thay arent vorbiden. Thats somting wery anoying. :|

  • @lbochtler I agree completely!

  • I dont like the MV ban its not the bulbs fault. There is nothing wrong with the bulb!!!! If mercury is the problem they should find a different way to dispose of it.

  • And theres Mercury in HPS and MH

  • @SilverlinerOV50 Also quite true!

  • I have two boxes 12per box of Mercury Vapor lights as well as 1 box of ballasts (All new-never used) any one interested I am going to sell them now that I see some people might have a hard time finding them.

  • Good idea and thanks!

  • why would the department of energy store vast volumes of Mercury? what other sources would they want for it?

  • It's ashame that mercury vapor lights are banned, they're more reliable and easier to see under at night than high pressure sodium streetlights and I can testify to that.

  • Comment removed

  • how about metal halides?

  • Mercury vapor lamps will also be banned in the EU in 2015, that's what I read, Mercury vapor lights look really nice.

  • no true ? i found a site with Mercury Vapor lamp's and can i get a 100w or 175 to run on 110?

  • The bulbs won't be banned. It's just the ballasts and the fixtures. All the stores nearby have stopped carrying the fixtures and ballasts. However, bulbs are still plentiful.

  • i see but i would like to get a 100w or 175w can that be run on 110 or 115 ? its good to know they did not stop makeing them :)

  • You would need a ballast or a fixture in order to do that. A regular MV bulb will burn out or explode if you connect it straight to line voltage. They do make self ballasted MV bulbs though, but they have an incandescent filament inside of them that acts as the ballast and that effects the color of the light output. My suggestion is to keep checking ebay and flea markets. Also, if you see a beat up MV fixture lying on the sidewalk, grab it. It might still work.

  • ok thanks a lot man i will keep a look out :)

  • dude i just got one form ebay for 50$ ya !!!!!! its just like one in your vid

  • That suck that they where banned luckely I live in Canada and there is no ban!

  • They Will Never Make Another Westinghouse Lifeguard, Sylvania Banner, G-E Bonus Line, Champion, They Were & Are The Best!!! Ever I`M Hopeing That A Certen Lamp Manufactuere Can Reproduce Commertive Lamps Of The Above, I`m Pritty Sure The Banner Is Out As Because Of The Complacated Frame, BUT Wouldent It Be Neet If They Could Do This For Us Collectors. I`ve Never Heard Of Lights Of Ameerica, BUT LEAVE IT TO THIS DAY & AGE FOR THEM TO BE "MADE IN CHINA"

  • I was looking at a local Sutherlands, and found some Mercury Vapor lightbulbs. I don't recall the wattage, but I figured you might like to know.

  • I To Feel Your Pain! I Feel Whoever In Our Government Did This I Fell Killed An Old Friend! I Have Heard It Was Because Of The Mercury, And Metel Halide& Sodium Lamps Were Not As Dangrous! NEWS FLASH!! A Sodium Vapor Is A Mercury Vapor In A Alumina Siclica Arc Tube With Sodium, A Metal Halide Is A Mercury Vapor With Halogens In A Quarts Arc Tube. LEDs Just Suck!! Light Pollution Can Be Attrebuted To The Bright Orange Yellow Light Given Off Causing The "FIRE IN THE SKY" Look At Night.

  • I've just finished replacing my new Home Depot metal halide outdoor light fixture for the 5th time. They just luv me down there. You might remember the last attempted replacement of the MV light..they were sold under the "lights of america" label..made in China. They were so bad they were pulled off the market.

  • Can you run a mercury vapor bulb in a metal halide fixture if they are the same wattage and voltage? I have heard this because metal halide and mercury vapor are similar bulbs. Is this true?

  • If its a probe start metal halide ballast and its 175 watts or greater yes. If it is pulse start, you should take the ignitor out of the circuit first cause the ignitor pulse could kill your MV bulb. If its less than 175 watts you should go to a lower wattage. Example is 70 watt MH ballast runs a 100 watt MV, 39 watt MH ballast runs a 50 watt MV and so forth.

  • Ok then. I have a 175 watt probe start metal halide fixture, so I could put in a 175 mercury vapor? Sorry, I'm just new to this. A lightbulb n00b.

  • Yes. That is correct.

  • Ok that's great! I'm sure that soon they'll want to ban probe start metal halide ballasts because they're not as efficient and can run Mercury vapor. They're pushing LED's a lot but a lot of them only get 30 lumens a watt where MV can get 60. When this decision was made to ban MV ballasts it was probably based on fear because it had the word mercury in it. I doubt the people who decided this even knew how an incandescent bulb works. Yesterday on Craigslist I got 24 probe starts &MV for $50.

  • It's irony that's for sure. I have no clue why they decided to go through with the ban. I sure hope that it gets reversed eventually though.

  • Until now, I'd had no idea MV lamps had been banned. This is astonishing; to me, the bluish-green light of MV is vastly superior to the dismal burnt-umber of sodium - especially when you realize that the very first sodium lamps put out such a ghastly-looking light that they had to add mercury to make them more livable! How's that for irony?

My question: I have two 175-watt MV security lights; one of them has started end-of-life cycling. Is there any place I can get a replacement MV bulb?

  • I feel your pain. Definitely irony. Not many people realize that HPS lamps have mercury in them as well. As for getting a replacement bulbs, bulbs should still be relatively easy to find. Only the ballasts and fixtures were banned. The result of this is that I find myself buying cheap mercury vapor yard lights for the sole purpose of gutting the ballasts and reusing them!

  • I love these HID lights, especially MV. I've never used any before yesterday, so I'm new to them. They're a lot of fun. The 400w ones are BRIGHT. I took one outside and it lit up all of the neighbor's trees. They'e actually mostly high bays and low bays from Craigslist, but I could turn them into something else if I wanted. What would be cool is if there was a way to put the ballast inside a lamp, and put a HID socket into a lamp so it was a HID lamp that looked like an incandescent one!

  • those EPA know it all mouth scientists may have some thing to do with it

  • Hi dude i am also a mercury vapor fan and im disapointed with the ban that theyve put on them so since they dont sell mercury vapor lights anymore im forced to take old mercury vapor fixtures from realy old long abandened buildings that have hobos living inside them. O and could you post your email adress on this video so i can let you no if i get some old florescent lamp ballast that you could have or mayby old mercury vapor fixtures.??????????

  • Were All Dissapointed with the Ban....High Pressure Sodium is not nearly as good.

  • I feel your pain. I love that blue green color of a clear MV lamp and I like the white light of a DX MV lamp. I'm not a big fan of the orange color of HPS light used as general lighting. Accent lighting on gold colored buildings works, but not for the streets and walkways. Metal halide bulbs have a nice white color but they explode when they burnout. MV bulbs last the longest and don't explode very often. I have been hunting down every MV fixture I can find and taking them when I can.

  • Gee, I thought I was the only 1 that likes mercs. Nice U-tube vid on mercs here.

About the stupid MV ban, Yup, I absolutely HATE the fact that our stupid gov't has passed legislation on banning MV lighting, suposedly to prevent the so-called GHG...How Stupid! it's obsurd that the gov't gets involved where it really shouldn't. I have 2 mercs on my property and I really enjoy 'em. Good MV vid here...keep 'em com'n (if U can). Long live the MV!

  • Right on, bro! I'm right there with you on that.

  • I like the MV too, but the fixture I do hate because nearly 45% of the light is wasted to illuminate the bottom of clouds and birds. Not much goes toward the ground where it belongs. This is a big "glare bomb" that increases light pollution and the light emitted goes into my bedroom window because it is not a "Full cut-off fixture. Install a skycap to stop the up light and replace the bulb with a 70 Watt bulb.

  • Hey, great idea! I'd never heard of a 'skycap', but it makes sence to stop the upward light -- and then replace the bulb with a 70 Watt MV lamp (and ballast). Course now, everybody's hell-bent for sodiums (orange light--YUCK!).

It looks as tho LED type street lights are on the horizon now. So if those happen, I think that'll be it for all vapor-type HID's...Bummer!

  • Comment removed

  • I've been trying to get hold of a few 80 watt clear Mercury lamps for some time now for my outside lights. If anyone else in England wants them as well I'd be happy to split a bulk order (multiples of 25 lamps) - lead time is a couple of months. I can't afford to get a box of them unless I can distribute the surplus lamps.

    BG

  • Hey dude dose the home depot sell these kind of lights

  • Comment removed

  • you can put a mercury vapor lamp in a metal halide ballast

  • yep you can...for 175 Watts and UP....if you put a 100 Watt MV in a 100 Watt MH ballast, the lamp will be overdriven by about 25 watts, probably wont have much effect on the lamp...but a 70 watt MH ballast would be a better match for a 100 watt merc....you can reverse it and put a MH on a MV ballast, but since MV lamps have a lower ignition voltage the MH might not strike on a MV ballast, and it will shorten the lamp life so i do not recomend that you do it..yeah it sucks that they banned MV!

  • a metal halide ballast will burn a mercury vapor lamp but a mercury vapor ballast will not burn a metal halide lamp

  • actually a Mercury Vapor Ballast Can Burn a Metal Halide Lamp, the Starting will not be Very Reliable as Metal Halide Lamps need a Higher OCV(Open Circuit Voltage)..than Mercury Vapor Lamps....also the MH Lamp will have a shortened Life Span running on a MV Ballast.

  • They still sell em here in micigan, mecury vapor and mercury halide...ballasts and bulbs!! LONG LIVE MERCURY VAPOR!!

  • If you analyze the efficacy of all HID sources, MV will always win, for longevity and CRI reasons!

  • IDA (International Dark Sky Association) is completely uneducated about HID lighting sources. Because MV is the oldest HID source, they automatically think that it is the most non-efficient. But High Pressure Sodium is UGLY, unreliable (CYCLING?) and expensive!!!

  • ya i hate HPS bulbs...its just stupid that they acually use them, cosidering the crappyness of the color spectrum as mentioned in davidfromae's videos

  • lol micigan.. i meant michigan sorry

  • EAT MY VOLTAGE!! Ha ha, I love it. I agree, MV should not have been banned. Fortunately I have collected enough lamps and fixtures to keep MV in my life forever!

  • Metal Halide Lamps are okay, the quartz one's can explode, which is bad and the ceramic ones still need improvement as they are expensive, they wont explode but the lifetime is still short, also effiency can be improved by using electronic ballasts..by the way nice video dave!

  • since i can no longer get new mercury vapor fixtures,or ballasts i opperate mercury vapor lamps on metal halide ballasts, since they are electrically similar,i currently own four mercury vapor lamps two Regent Clear 175 watt lamps, one Regent /Dx 100 watt lamp, and one general electric 175 watt/Dx,Hps is all the rage now,i have one Hps Lamp its 70 watt,i wont say i hate it,but the color and contrast arent all that good,so i continue to use mercury vapor lighting, even inside my home.

  • i think they are trying to ban incandescent light bulbs in newzealand but how will lava lamps work without them?

  • I still see plenty of these in use. Here in NJ we even still have quite a few incandescent street lights! Despite the shorter life, incandescent bulbs are actually the most environmentally safe, since there are no hazardous chemicals in the bulbs. Mercury-filled CFLs are a disaster waiting to happen!

  • Yes that is right. Incandescent lamps are the only non mercury containing lamps but they are also the most inefficient and shortest lived ones, not to mention they produce a lot of heat. I'm not a big fan of the newer spiral CFL's which are infamous for catching on fire and not lasting long. The older preheat magnetic CFL's I like a lot more. They are pretty safe and they lasted promised hours.

  • I say ban the CFL's, they're 10x more fragile, they can't be tossed out in household trash and can't be recycled cause of the parts they have comprised of their ballasts.

  • I'm with you at least for the spiral instant start CFL. Unfortunately, they are really pushing the spirals out here because they are way more efficient than older incandescents. Now, if they decided to start making preheat magnetic spirals, I'd be all over those.

  • LED or Incandescent!

Both rock, both are HOT and both are bright :D

  • I waiting for LED take over the all street light!
