For those who, like me, had trouble "getting" this: They're more or less portraying a meeting/party scene with several overheard conversations. When each is in the background, it's not necessarily the same character who was in the foreground only seconds before. The murmuring represents the conversation "overheard" behind the conversation you're "having" with the foreground speaker.

'cause it was very confusing when I thought these were all supposed to be the same two people.
