No disrespect to Gary's version, but I by far prefer this one and the studio version from "Over The Top". Brilliant band here, played with superb feel! Awesome!
@bullshitdetective1 If ye think this guy is an amateur, youre to stupid to insult...if ye like Gary's cover better..its fine by me, but dont say that Clem Clempson is an amateur..then ye dont no shit!!!
This is also Gary's version. Gary Moore played on Cozy Powell's solo album and this was the original version played by Gary. He then changed the arrangement for his album Wild Frontier. The Loner was written by Max Middleton, an English composer and keyboard player who played with Jeff Beck.
The original version is on the Solo project album "Over the top" from Cozy Powell. Clem played the guitar on this track. Gary was involved in this album too, but he plays only on track 2 "Killer". The album ist from 1979. I think this video is from this time too.
You are absolutely right. I was thinking of the song "Sunset" which was on the other Cozy Powell album and which was also recorded on Gary´s live album "Rockin' Every Night - live in Japan".
I thought Moore and Max Middleton co-wrote this. This version (and the one on Over The Top even more) is more Max's style, with Clem doing the Beckian guitar. I don't know, Gary's good too, but there's much different feels, Gary's version being "darker".
@GravyDaveNewson Because Jeff Beck recorded the first version of this song, and this version sounds just like the Jeff Beck version.
I wasn't making a comparison between the two guitarists, I was simply stating that although I like both Gary Moore and Jeff Beck, I prefer Moore's version of this song.

Fabulous recording you've got there !
If i'm not mistaken that's Clem Clempson on guitar ?
The rest of the band is familiar, Jack Bruce bass and Don Airey on keyboards

Can someone tell me what year this was from! Clem did the best job on this song, better than Moore, better than anyone else that has attempted.

Gary Moore never was involved writing the original. He just got credits for himself doing the 1987 version,

I'm a huge fan of Jeff Beck, but the Gary Moore version has truckloads more feeling and emotions than this one.

@vampiroangelico Jeff Beck isn't playing on this, why make that comparison?

@vampiroangelico Fair play. It's certainly in the style of JB, but nowhere near his majesty.

I like this better than Gary Moore version.

@710923kt well, this version is sexy...

@710923kt The problem of Gary's version is the drums... With Cozy on drums in the place of the machine, it could be awesome.
