  • ADHD symptoms reflect various causes. The symptoms are found with various fetal drug syndromes, minor head injuries, poorly controlled seizure disorders. At the beginning of '11 an article in the Lancet, a major British medical journal, found the symptoms disappeared with diet changes among many children. Dr. Barkley does not make any of these distinctions so we really cannot tell who or what he is talking about.

This area can serve as a poster child for poor research design.

  • Basic research shows that prescription stimulants cause brain damage. For a review of some of this research go to Grace Jackson, M.D., Drug Induced Dementia; Dr. Jackson is a psychiatrist.

Dr. Barkeley's research compares children without ADHD symptoms with children with ADHD symptoms regardless of their prescriptions; most of the ADHD children were or had been on stimulant medications at the time of the study. We cannot know whether the observations are due to ADHD or to mediation use.

  • All those adults you're missing in your studies are probably in jail...

  • @IamEyalMarcosLevit Yes, there is likely a high percentage of those with this disorder in prison or on probation/parole.

  • dr barley is a very good drugs salesman

  • I thought he said he was going to talk about Sluggish Cognitive Tempo?

  • His powerpoint is triggering my Attention Deficit.

  • 5 people are scientologists

  • THIS IS PROOF THAT THE DSM IS A CROCK OF SHIT! they really need to do some critical thinking in the DSM. Barkley is right on point when he says that you outgrow the DSM but you dont outgrow the disorder.

  • @threadysparrow They do hence the new versions over time.

  • This guy missed his meds. He is going to mislead people by mixing ADHD with CD etc... Not a good video for someone to watch about ADHD for the first time.

  • @murphj4 Mixing ADHD with what? Can you explain?

  • @christvswarhol

    CD = conduct disorder

  • no es que sea inadecuado, es que no está traducido al castellano y los que no sabemos inglés no nos enteramos.

  • This Dr. Barkley is very accurate, although his experience with older ADHD sufferers lacks and he knows it clearly. The science is there as are the statistics about driving, substance abuse, job loss, relationship problems... but he is NOT saying ALL ADHD sufferers live with ALL the effects... like poor driving. There are variables all over, just like "normal" people, just a lot more with and ADHD brain. I have suffered my whole life with this. Being severely educated on my infliction works.

  • Promoting/enforcing safe driving in teens is good but I think singling out ADHD people is a bit discriminatory. Statistically people with ADHD tend towards unsafe driving habits but I would need to see some very substantial evidence of a strong correlation between the physiological effects of ADHD on an individual as it applies to driving before I believed that the statistics were anything but a result of freely made, lucid, bad decisions which are theres to make and not other ADHDers to bear

  • Btw I'm talking about singling out with legislation. I'm not at all opposed to parents/guardians/others raising awareness of the vulnerabilities ADHD people tend to be pre-disposed to in terms of driving or anything else in life.

  • I hope there wasn't anyone in that seminar with ADHD i have no idea wtf that guy just said. Get to the point :/

  • lol i have adhd and i was able to follow it. but i had my meds in me so i hear your point lol

  • I'm a teacher, and I think the reason some people don't believe it's real is that so many kids are misdiagnosed & placed on meds just because they are misbehaving in school. Unfortunately I see a number of parents who don't really want to deal w/ their kids behavior & teach them how to behave, and then when they are disruptive in school, they find someone to diagnose ADHD & medicate their child so they still don't have to deal w/ it. When someone has real ADHD it's definitely different.

  • and people like you have an opinion about ADHD and since you deal with ADHD all the time as a teacher i think they should take people like you into consideration too you know. my teachers were the ones who got my mom involved with my ADHD and if it werent for teachers like you then my symptoms would not have been diagnosed.

  • If it was not real then it would not be treatable. You can't treat something which does not exist.

If ADHD was purely imaginative and not actually a brain disorder then double-blind treatment tests would simply fail.

They don't. They absolutely work and stimulants such as Ritalin completely and utterly improve every aspect of the disorder.

It's an abnormal lack of dopamine, under-developed executive functions and over-developed motor-fuctions. It's like a car with no brakes.

  • U make it seem as a bad thing... While its not a bad thing at all... I have ADHD, and I used to think its a bad thing...But not anymore, now i think its a pretty gd thing

  • @Solodicted23 At what point did I say it's a bad thing?

    I don't think it's a bad thing at all.

Pretty much every single one of my heroes seems to display intense ADHD behaviour / thinking.

Eminem - Quentin Tarrantino - Derren Brown - Ricky Gervais... On and on.

ADHD makes me meticulous, obsessive and because of that, totally dominant of anything I fall in love with. Same with those guys. ADHD isn't detrimental at all, it's fantastic.

  • Well then you have my apologies :) I misunderstood what you said... But still these obsessions arent always good ;)

  • I have ADHD, I am currently waiting for treatment and meds. It is absolutely real and absolutely detrimental to a social and progressive life.

ADHD has more genetic proof and basis than Autism and bi-polar. The only reason people don't mock or refuse to believe Autism is because the symptoms are so apparent and abnormal (in some cases).

People think of Rain Man and just accept it. It's just because the symptoms of ADHD are the everyday symptoms of everyone. They'rejust to the absolute extreme.

  • Anybody who says ADHD is not real is simply wrong and is likely foolish due to lack of actual research.

They come to conclusions based on popular culture. Mass media unfairly, irresponsibly and cruely mocks its existence simply because they do not understand it.

People then pass on these opinions and it becomes popular belief that it's a false disorder. People refer to it as a "new" disorder when we've known about it since 1798.

  • I have ADD. It has messed up my life. I wish I was dead. Don't tell me it isn't real. I used to mock it too. As the wreckage of my life unfolds, what is said in this video is verified. I'm hurting bad. ADD is real.

  • People in the audience laughing at 25:40 -- what the fuck is wrong with you, you fucking sadists?

  • I have adhd and I thought it was pretty funny too.

  • BAAAHHAHAHAHAHA that was GR8!

  • Why the HELL does a video for ADD people start off so slow & boring? Idiotic. Didn't stay to get past the intro.

  • Excellent video! The UK needs better NHS services for people with ADHD so please sign the petition on 10 Downing Street site. Sorry cant post links here so do a Google search on aadd uk petition to find it

  • ugh, sorry the keyboard on my computer doesn't work 3/4 of the time

I present the arguement that the problem of ADHD sufferers comes primarily from a lack of ability among the general population to appreciate rampant learning and wide thought processes which are more conscious based, allowing for greater in depth and detailed look into subjects, more easily

flip side would be the problem that in depth problems must hold the attention of the thinker

educated people interest ADHD people I think

  • i have adhd and i agree, i am very interested in listening to intelligent people

  • so I present the arguement that the problem occurs because ADHD sufferers, personally I dislike being different from so many people, I wish they were more like me

but that's the nature of the rule of the mob/crowd

I posit that the problem is a lack of understanding of ADHD, and that the understanding should be more like indulgence of curiousity instead of sloven and boring routines and rote learning

maybe I just have an advantageous setup with ADHD, and I'm just talking out of proviledge

  • from personal experience I've found that when given the oppurtunity to satisfy my curiousities in schooling and so on, I NATURALLY learn all the things they wanted me to learn and more

it's when people try to force me to learn in a pattern they set up that things don't go well for me, I'm simply not interested, never taken medication and I'm fine without it, and doing fine, use your imagination instead of relying on others, and figure out a way to get your situation going well

  • I've noticed that there is a complete failure to take a look at living standards in the family in general, as well as oppurtunities to keep themselves busy in a genuine manner, all the diagnoses about it's problems are kind of pathetic, no I won't argue there aren't disadvantages, but it's intellectual cowardice to drug oneself into standardization, firstly the man mentions well off people doing well, he claims it's in spite of, the interesting thing is that ADHD helps in chaotic environments

  • FDA is a self supporting prophesy this just up side down logic. What is the evidence of drugs working besides those of the rich drug companies

  • "How is babby formed. How is babby formed. How girl get pragnent."

You're retarded. ADHD is a real disorder, there is no drug company conspiracy.

  • Are people in the drug industry completely trust worthy?I mean look at the banking system. Many doctors have voiced concern about the ADHD disorder diagnoses.

  • Well I wouldn't say everyone in the entire drug industry is full trustworthy. I have ADHD and I take a subtype of adderall and believe me it works. Also, ADHD is a REAL disorder and is classified as such in the DSMIV so yeah. Banking system do not chance the effectiveness of medications. There is no conspiracy here.

  • Russell Barkley, Ph.D seems to equate others to a profit motive in their software I need to understand why is the drug method not considered a profit motive.I am very worried about the drug industry here.

  • EXCELLENT VIDEO!

  • Wow, all this good stuff gets ignored while Hannah montana gets a billion views and never even sees the video. hmmmf, sheep
