It is bad enough that the administrators of the welfare state are moved by a hatred of ability. The greater tragedy is that they poison the minds of the constituency they so desperately need. Instead of the poor learning to admire the productive and aspire to be like them, they are taught by the system that their poverty is caused by others affluence. They learn to resent achievement and to prefer seeing the achievers dragged down. That is all the welfare state can bring about. - Richman

Of course not - it's ALL GWB's fault; he special-ordered Katrina and Ike, too.
The markets are already jittery. An increased cap gains tax, resulting in diminished returns, will ensure the market is even less appealing to investors.
3pal: dude, what PLANET are you on? Since 1929, Republicans and Democrats have each controlled the presidency for nearly 40 years. ... As of Friday, a $10,000 investment in the S.& P. stock market index would have grown to $11,733 if invested under Republican presidents only ... Faux News is an abomination; the job of news is to inform the citizenry of the goings-on of our government. REAL media does that; Faux instead affirms white male fears and prejudices, harming our democracy in the process.
A better question you should ask is WHY does the mainstream media bring attention to corporate malfeasance, and WHAT ELSE is it when those corp.'s use their $ to disparage the messenger...but a means to continue harming our nation to benefit themselves?
No, you've been fooled. If you think that the liberal media reports the whole story ... you're in denial.
Obama blames FOX? PLEASE... Talk about "out of touch". Why doesn't he point blame at himself? He's the one who decided it was a good idea to follow a Marxist cult. It was his decision to politically invlove himself with Communist terrorists. The guy has DONE NOTHING AS A SENATOR! It would stand to reason that people are judging him by his advisors, mentors, and political associations.
intro: simple question--WHO owns the media? Not liberal non-profit organizations. For-Profit parent corp's. So I agree the media doesn't report the whole story...it's in fact more conservative than you even realize. Shows how far our free press has fallen.
The media is "owned" by the almighty dollar! As are the VAST MAJORITY of our politicians. Which is exactly why OBAMA SAID & DID NOTHING about Freddie/Fannie. He was padding his pockets with funds from these corrupt orporations!
"Free press" means that there might be a news network that doesn't cater to your liberal ideology... You need to deal with it. A canidate that accepts money from Marxists/Felons & Communist terrorists, is considered news. What EXACTLY is your problem with FOX NEWS?
introvert: you crafted my retort for me, and it seems we agree in some ways.
When money can SWAY a press, that press is no longer a free press. And Fox is by far the worst in terms of being swayed by wealthy corporate interests, namely it's parent company, AND an apologist for the current (failed) administration.
Now CBS NBC etc. are also subsumed by monied interests, so any pretense of liberalism is a mirage. YOU, and I both, need to get news from multiple, broad diverse sources, instead.
ACORN is not news? Obama's political link to Ayers? NOT "news"?
Answer me this. If McCain were linked to a former abortion clinic bomber... would you consider that news? How about if McCain were involved with a church group that was accused of voter fraud? Would you consider that news?
FOX provides a side of the story that the other cable news networks overlook.
1. News from the network that brought you "When Animals Attack". Cheap, exploitative ratings grabbers that could care less for any sort of "integrity".
2. Parroting the administration: Under Clinton, Faux AT LEAST stood as the voice of OPPOSITION. Now they're the mouthpiece of the govt.
BUT...huge admission...Faux is merely more open-faced about it. Truth is all US networks are corporate-owned, so PURE free press is not on TV right now.
That's FOX entertainment. FOX NEWS IS a separate entity. Please give an example of a FOX NEWS "cheap ratings grabber" that wasn't real news. These people that say that Ayers is a "non-issue" really need their heads checked. The guy is an x-terrorist with NO REGRETS. He's a Marxist that believes the U.S. Government is the most opressive force in the world. What's more, is that Obama has an strange history of being "mentored" & "advised" by some famous Marxists.
Mo-Why don't you just admit to yourself that the real problem you have with FOX, is that it's a right slanted network. Is what MSNBC broadcasts "NEWS" to you? Troopergate? Todd Palin's early 80's DWI??? The New York Times reporting on Cindy McCains 1980's pill popping addiction? Gimme a break! Is that bullshit news worthy?
Why is it, that Liberals are all for left slanted freedom of press & speech, but when the right voices an opposition, it's "propaganda"?
Last time I checked, the "govt." was made up of two parties.
I may grant you that FOX is a mouth piece for the right. But so what? What is NBC? Please explain to me where the leftist fear of an opposing view is coming from? It's apparent to me that many "Liberals" want censorship of the opposition. FREEDOM of SPEECH/PRESS means FREEDOM TO ALL!
about 50% (maybe more) of the U.S. lean right. We get about 10% of the MS-media! What's your beef?
My name is INDIA MONIQUE MANUEL. My last name is Spanish. My middle name is french. My first name; well, my mom was being uniquely creative. Does this mean that I'm not AMERICAN. If I was a native american, then i shouldn't trust a man name Andrew Jackson, right? GET REAL!!!!!
He said "They are Undecided". If thats true, then how can he then ask "Did anyone Switch Their Position?" Yet earlier on this same forum, 2 men said that they would vote for McCain.
No, what he said was 2 people thought McCain had done a better job early in the debate. In the end he asked if any one had switched from their position, which was undecided. You can argue that undecided is not a position and he should have asked if anyone had made up their mind, but it was obvious what he meant.

Charitable Donations:
Bush - 2007: $165,660 (18% of income)
Cheney - 2007: $166,547 (5.5% of income).
Obama - 2000 thru 2004: Earned $200,000-$300,000 per year and donated LESS THAN 1% percent of income. When income soared to $4.2 million in 2007, contributions went up to 5% (Should giving to Wright's church count as "charitable"?)
Biden - 2007: $995 (0.3%). Over the past 10 years, Biden gave $3,690 (0.1%).
This should tell you something. This election overwhelmingly belongs to Obama. Should the Republicans try to steal it again, through disenfranchisement and rigged Republican-owned and operated machines, it should be so patently obvious that no one will take it lying down.

I believe a progressive tax system is the best of all the alternatives. Those who profit the most from our economic system should be willing, and are certainly able, to pay the most for keeping that system in operation.

Can you tell that to Joe Biden, please?
From the Washington Times:
Democratic vice-presidential candidate Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. has paid more than $2 million in campaign cash to his family members, their businesses and employers over the years, a practice that watchdogs criticize as rife with potential conflicts of interest.
As if Biden's paltry charitable donation record weren't bad enough... $3,690 in 10 years. Now, he's funneled $2 million in campaign cash to his family.
Throughout my entire adult life, I've consistently contributed 5x the national average of 2% of one's income. At one point, Obama's and Biden's COMBINED charitable giving did not even equal the national average.
You've given 10% of your income to charity and you're complaining about a 1% tax increase? So you have no problem with the needy getting your money if you give it directly. How very much the opposite of everything you've posted here.
That's right...it is, after all, MY money and MY right to decide to which qualifying CHARITY it is directed...NOT the government's right to TAKE it and funnel it into federal programs that have been proven to be corrupt and useless.
And, yeah, you probably can't imagine setting aside 10% of YOUR income to charitable donations....I'm not surprised.
Actually, it is the government's right. That's what taxes are.
It's your right to decide who you think should be in charge of that money.
Living in society has a cost, and while I applaud you for your selflessness in giving, each person deciding for themselves what they want to support is just not a reasonable solution. Governments, though not the most efficient beasts in the world are able to judge what spending best reflects the needs and beliefs of the citizenry as a whole.
The argument is for smaller government, not the elimination of government. Of course government has legitimate functions that need to be funded by the whole for the benefit of the whole. Those functions are defense, courts and police. Virtually everything else is government overstepping it's bounds. ANd Obama isn't just for big government, he's for massive government. And he's going to pay for it with other people's money who should be allowed to do what they want with what is theirs.
Yeah, like those CEOs from Lehman and Bear Sterns who screwed America over and walked away with billions... why should they have to pay any taxes after they worked so hard to steal it? Or the oil industry who have brought our economy to it's knees while raking in record profits, they need another big McCain tax cut!
Well...hold on to your wallet, then, because NOBODY BUT NOBODY knows how to make money like Warren Buffett...and this time he'll have the Fed. in his pocket, and a fat wallet filled with YOUR increased Obama tax payments, to play with.
They made money. If they broke laws, bring charges against them. If they did it by bamboozling idiots, be sad that you're an idiot. Yay them. boo you.
10%? Sounds like modern-day tithing. Here's a thought, friend: back when the Church held sway, tithing was a quasipolitical arrangement, and revenue was distributed w/o consulting the congregation. Folks didn't decide for themselves what the Church did with the funds.
And they were fine with that.
Why is it so hard to understand that taxation isn't about wealth redistribution, but about shared costs? The incentivization properties of tax dollars are as important as their nominal worth.
A good argument for a flat/fair tax. i.e. the exact opposite of the highly graduated tax brackets Obama wants to introduce. Please keep track of your own arguments better. You don't even know when you're spouting ultra-conservative talking points. Embarassing.
As a businessman (continuously operating my own ventures since 1977) I can easily say my best profit years were under Democratic administrations. Democrats provide a far superior business climate for innovators and entrepreneurs, and for new economy industries like IT, renewable energy, and generally "creative" sectors. Republicans are generally better for dinosaur businesses, like coal, oil, chemicals, armaments, ranching, mining, and generally "extractive" industries.
For obvious reasons, the IT industry soared leading up to the Y2K software crisis/bubble. Of course, there WAS that nasty Microsoft suit and all those IT jobs outsourced to India/Indonesia during the Y2K bubble...and many are still there.
Furthermore, Obama's proposed INCREASE of the capital gains tax will send jobs overseas as opposed to helping America's middle class.
74% of U.S. CEOs believe Obama would be detrimental to the business economy. Even after the bailout, markets are uneasy...waiting, watching...to see if they need to sell-off before the tax is imposed and/or relocate their businesses to countries with less than a 35% business tax.
Really? Our current tax scale requires the wealthy to pay the most and is a disincentive to businesses/employers.
Life's not guaranteed to be "fair" (and it's not our government's job to decide what is or is not). Some people make the most of life; some don't.
A great example of someone who rose from utter poverty to become one of the wealthiest and most powerful people in the world is....shhhh....a black(!).....shhhh....woman(!) .....Oprah.
The "rich" pay income taxes at a GREATER RATE than they earn. The "poorest" quintile gets 4% of income but pays -2% of fed. income taxes - NEGATIVE because most qualify for the Earned Inc. Tax Credit. The top 1/5 garners 53% of income but shells out 80% of the income tax. And the richest 1% of taxpayers receives 16% of income but pays 1/3 of fed. income taxes. Therefore, the "richest" end up with a smaller share than they started with, while the "poorer" end up with more.
That's the "ability to pay" model in tax theory. It's the most effective way to ensuring that you get the most consistent revenues, as you charge more taxes to those who can pay.
Shorting the middle class (engine of our economy) shorts the US economy. Look at where it's gotten us so far!
People in the top 5% do not NEED a tax cut. If you make $300k you don't have trouble buying groceries.
You got that right. My mom is working a 9 to 5 job and barely making it with this bad economy. my mom and I don't eat until the younger kids does. By the end of that, we have scraps. I have a cyst in my leg. Cut it out myself. Didn't want to go to the hospital because we don't have insurance. Don't want my mom losing everything. McCain don't have anything that will benefit us. Obama does. My mom can't pay insurance out of her pocket. She barely can pay for gas. So, my mom vote is going to Obama!
Can ANYONE look at McCain-Palin and honestly admit to themselves that McCain and Palin have the intelligence, temperament and energy to help lift this country out of the worst economic meltdown since the Great Depression?
3palominos! Can't you see he cares about charity?? Let him enjoy his last 18 days before Satanic Uncharitable Muslim Terrorist, Barack Hussein Obama seizes power and makes us all wear veils.

bush and cheney are WAAAY wealthier than their presidential and vice presidential salaries would lead you do believe. Hilarious..you cannot defend Obama's and Biden's greed...so you attack those who actually give more (as opposed to less than the national charitable average) for either the amounts they give or the reasons behind it.
Again...facts are facts. Biden's funneling U.S. citizens' campaign contributions to his family members is a crime. The man claims paying more in taxes is patriotic, but he obviously does NOT believe charitable giving to be patriotic.
I'm saying, accurately, that there are many, MANY way more important aspects to being President than how much one gives to charity.
McCain and Palin should be commended for how much they've given to charity. Seriously, it's impressive. But it doesn't change the fact that they'd be a continuation of the disastrous policies of George W. Bush. End of story.
And by death spiral, I mean his campaign's Death Spiral, he's going to have a healthy career in the US senate for the next few decades , more power to him for that.
But, you want to know the real difference between Barack Obama and John McCain?
Barack Obama's going to become President, and John McCain isn't.

I'm sorry...WHO is spending a historically high amount on NEGATIVE CAMPAIGNING? Who mentioned nothing of stopping his negative campaign ads or even repudiating an abhorrent comment from a fellow Dem politician?
Obama = spending more on negative advertising because he has more money to spend overall than poor McCain, who no one wants to donate to. 3 out of 10 of his ads were negative according you independent study.
McCain = 100%, ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of his ads from Oct. 8-Oct 15 were negative according to an independent study.
But, you want to know the real difference between Barack Obama and John McCain?
Barack Obama's going to become President, and John McCain isn't.
The redistributionists don't just want to give their money, they want to give other people's money away. Specifically, they want to take money from those that have earned it, and give it to those that haven't.
Redistribution of wealth is an attack on the successful, and a subsidy to the unsuccessful. Egalitarians aim to achieve equality by bringing down the successful to their level.
As if our progressive tax code wasn't already accomplishing it...
The trickle down philosophy has yet to actually trickle down. There has been a redistribution going on for many years. It's been going from the shrinking middle class to the people at the top.
Who will pay "more?" Those making over $250k/yr. And only as much "more" as reverting the Bush tax cuts will bring as that is exactly Obama's plan. As is increasing the capital gains tax to Clinton-era levels.
The investor class has been raping this country for far too long.
Blinky and winky? Wow, that's funny? That is so true. McCain can't look Obama in the face and Palin tried to use her sex appeal. Sorry honey. It DIDN'T work. Go BO!!!!

Remember the Enron scandal - you know, Clinton's buddy Ken Lay, who slept in the Lincoln bedroom? - or the bursting of the Y2K bubble, perhaps? or even the 9/11 terror attacks, so many of you conveniently forget?
Of course not - it's ALL GWB's fault; he special-ordered Katrina and Ike, too.
The markets are already jittery. An increased cap gains tax, resulting in diminished returns, will ensure the market is even less appealing to investors.
Not a big picture kinda guy, are you?

3pal: dude, what PLANET are you on? Lay was cozy to BUSH. 9-11 was on BUSH'S watch, real, noteworthy drops in the market came upon news of Bush being GIVEN the presidency...prior to that the uncertainty after the Lewinsky debacle also caused a drop--time and time again Republicans doing this nation harm in the name of advancing their party at the expense of the nation.

Obama says he'd be 2 or 3 points higher in the polls if there were no FOX news ... I LAUGHED ... and LAUGHED WELL.
How 'bout this...
If there were no mainstream Liberal media... AKA Obamaganda - (MSNBC/CNN/ABC/CBS/TABLOID TV/The VIEW & so on) McCain would be 20 points ahead.
"Obamaganda" ... hehehe ... that's good.
introvertical71 3 years ago
Faux News is an abomination; the job of news is to inform the citizenry of the goings-on of our government. REAL media does that; Faux instead affirms white male fears and prejudices, harming our democracy in the process.
A better question you should ask is WHY does the mainstream media bring attention to corporate malfeasance, and WHAT ELSE is it when those corp.'s use their $ to disparage the messenger...but a means to continue harming our nation to benefit themselves?
You've been fooled.
mowriter 3 years ago
No, you've been fooled. If you think that the liberal media reports the whole story ... you're in denial.
Obama blames FOX? PLEASE... Talk about "out of touch". Why doesn't he point blame at himself? He's the one who decided it was a good idea to follow a Marxist cult. It was his decision to politically invlove himself with Communist terrorists. The guy has DONE NOTHING AS A SENATOR! It would stand to reason that people are judging him by his advisors, mentors, and political associations.
introvertical71 3 years ago
intro: simple question--WHO owns the media? Not liberal non-profit organizations. For-Profit parent corp's. So I agree the media doesn't report the whole story...it's in fact more conservative than you even realize. Shows how far our free press has fallen.
mowriter 3 years ago
The media is "owned" by the almighty dollar! As are the VAST MAJORITY of our politicians. Which is exactly why OBAMA SAID & DID NOTHING about Freddie/Fannie. He was padding his pockets with funds from these corrupt orporations!
"Free press" means that there might be a news network that doesn't cater to your liberal ideology... You need to deal with it. A canidate that accepts money from Marxists/Felons & Communist terrorists, is considered news. What EXACTLY is your problem with FOX NEWS?
introvertical71 3 years ago
introvert: you crafted my retort for me, and it seems we agree in some ways.
YOU, and I both, need to get news from multiple, broad diverse sources, instead.
mowriter 3 years ago
You never answered MY question.
What exactly is your problem with "FAUX NEWS"?
Is what they report not "news" to you?
ACORN is not news? Obama's political link to Ayers? NOT "news"?
Answer me this. If McCain were linked to a former abortion clinic bomber... would you consider that news? How about if McCain were involved with a church group that was accused of voter fraud? Would you consider that news?
FOX provides a side of the story that the other cable news networks overlook.
introvertical71 3 years ago
My problem with Faux news is twofold:
Truth is all US networks are corporate-owned, so PURE free press is not on TV right now.
mowriter 3 years ago
"When animals attack"? please...
What's more, is that Obama has an strange history of being "mentored" & "advised" by some famous Marxists.
introvertical71 3 years ago
Mo-Why don't you just admit to yourself that the real problem you have with FOX, is that it's a right slanted network. Is what MSNBC broadcasts "NEWS" to you? Troopergate? Todd Palin's early 80's DWI??? The New York Times reporting on Cindy McCains 1980's pill popping addiction? Gimme a break! Is that bullshit news worthy?
Why is it, that Liberals are all for left slanted freedom of press & speech, but when the right voices an opposition, it's "propaganda"?
introvertical71 3 years ago
"Now they're the mouthpiece of the govt."

No, what he said was 2 people thought McCain had done a better job early in the debate. In the end he asked if any one had switched from their position, which was undecided. animes2k 3 years ago 5

3palominos 3 years ago

animes2k 3 years ago 2
That's right...it is, after all, MY money and MY right to decide to which qualifying CHARITY it is directed...NOT the government's right to TAKE it and funnel it into federal programs that have been proven to be corrupt and useless.
And, yeah, you probably can't imagine setting aside 10% of YOUR income to charitable donations....I'm not surprised.
Dems are all about "Gimme, gimme, gimme..."
3palominos 3 years ago
Actually, it is the government's right. That's what taxes are.
It's your right to decide who you think should be in charge of that money.
Living in society has a cost, and while I applaud you for your selflessness in giving, each person deciding for themselves what they want to support is just not a reasonable solution. Governments, though not the most efficient beasts in the world are able to judge what spending best reflects the needs and beliefs of the citizenry as a whole.
Not just you.
thebirdgirl 3 years ago 2
The argument is for smaller government, not the elimination of government. Of course government has legitimate functions that need to be funded by the whole for the benefit of the whole. Those functions are defense, courts and police. Virtually everything else is government overstepping it's bounds. ANd Obama isn't just for big government, he's for massive government. And he's going to pay for it with other people's money who should be allowed to do what they want with what is theirs.

Yeah, like those CEOs from Lehman and Bear Sterns who screwed America over and walked away with billions... why should they have to pay any taxes after they worked so hard to steal it?

As a businessman (continuously operating my own ventures since 1977) I can easily say my best profit years were under Democratic administrations. Republicans are generally better for dinosaur businesses, like coal, oil, chemicals, armaments, ranching, mining, and generally "extractive" industries.

The federal income tax is indisputably progressive and is unfairly intended to redistribute income, and that is exactly what it does.
Now, Obama wants to skew it even more.
3palominos 3 years ago
The "rich" pay income taxes at a GREATER RATE than they earn. The "poorest" quintile gets 4% of income but pays -2% of fed. income taxes - NEGATIVE because most qualify for the Earned Inc. Tax Credit. The top 1/5 garners 53% of income but shells out 80% of the income tax. And the richest 1% of taxpayers receives 16% of income but pays 1/3 of fed. income taxes. Therefore, the "richest" end up with a smaller share than they started with, while the "poorer" end up with more.
3palominos 3 years ago
That's the "ability to pay" model in tax theory. It's the most effective way to ensuring that you get the most consistent revenues, as you charge more taxes to those who can pay.
Shorting the middle class (engine of our economy) shorts the US economy. Look at where it's gotten us so far!
People in the top 5% do not NEED a tax cut. If you make $300k you don't have trouble buying groceries.

Philosophy is egalitarianism:
The redistributionists don't just want to give their money, they want to give other people's money away. Specifically, they want to take money from those that have earned it, and give it to those that haven't.
Redistribution of wealth is an attack on the successful, and a subsidy to the unsuccessful. Egalitarians aim to achieve equality by bringing down the successful to their level.
As if our progressive tax code wasn't already accomplishing it...
3palominos 3 years ago
The trickle down philosophy has yet to actually trickle down. There has been a redistribution going on for many years. It's been going from the shrinking middle class to the people at the top.
Who will pay "more?" Those making over $250k/yr. And only as much "more" as reverting the Bush tax cuts will bring as that is exactly Obama's plan. As is increasing the capital gains tax to Clinton-era levels.
The investor class has been raping this country for far too long.
