Could be atmospheric lightning. That would explain the buzzing and lack of "boom". Also, lightning can come in all different colors; although uncommon, it does happen.

Was there any seismic activity in the area that night? where these lights witnessed near water or mountainous/rocky terrain? It could well be a terrestrial phenomina known as 'earthquake lights', caused by tectonic activity and similar to peizo-electricity (google Paul Deveraux 'Earth lights') to find out more. HF

So this same thing just happened above my house here in Michigan. The power dimmed and then went out, then came back on. Then it happened again, same process only this time the power stayed on. Anyone have any clue on what this is?? I also noticed a metal taste in my mouth after this happened.

It looks like the Northern Lights that dipped down more south than normal. Look out tonight because the solar storm is high peak tonight and the tri-state area could see this again. Very cool that you saw this as I didn't hear about it and I live in Northern NJ.

I don't think it's a blown transformer. I've seen tons of those. Whatever is creating these lights seems to have a little altitude to it. Being that it is raining when this film was taken, I would say its short, rapid burst of lightning. I had similar experience last year. It was quite an awe inspiring sight. I tried to record a video of it on my cellphone, and even though it was in 720p, it didn't have the same kick to it.

Yeah the buzzing noise sounds like a shorted circuit sound. An high voltage electrical arc could cause alot of colors like that. I have seen shorts causing different shades of blue and green and classic yellow and red fire colors.

Arcs from shorted out power lines. Couldn't be more obvious as power flashes from damaged lines, right down to the buzzing. Often incorrectly referred to as "exploding transformers". As a child this happened in the backyard of the home in which I grew up. During a night-time t-storm a large branch was knocked down upon a set of power lines, it see-sawed back & forth with intense flashing & the horrible buzzing for nearly an hr before it was finally shut down by the fire dept/electric company.

I live in dallas and im skeptical of what happened that night as the news stations showed the video and one slightly difference that I see from the videos here and from the news is that it seem there were glowing lights also from the sky.

(I've seen about 6-7 explode, from being struck by lightning, hit by a car, or even squirrels can cause them to short and blow.) This anomaly seems to last for quite a bit longer than a normal transformer explosion, so I'm on the fence about the whole 'transformer explosion' theory. I don't have an explanation. :-/

The transformer at a substation explanation is not viable, arcing that severe and that long surely would have shorted the circuit and shut it down, nor does arcing rapidly change colours of its surroundings from blue, purple, green, white, red, orange and yellow.
