Oh man that's epic, yu remember the other large earthquake after that one? A few months later? I got that on camer on my phone lol, I was in a maths test haha!
2.22g's of shaking in your backyard - interesting... I guess that if you weren't in it, you wouldn't know how it felt. Lucky you and me and another 400,000 people.
Thx 4 da video! I haven't seen many of it actually happening, only really big aftershocks after it. This video is fantastic, feel srry 4 u 4 having 2 clean it up! Our power didn't even go off (we in Nth west chch) and no damage so we all good
my god this looks freaky. we were in the car for this one so felt nothing compared to hwat this looked like!! was this in the first floor?? or higher up??
how rude of someone to post your video on youtube as their own (i originally found the video you made a copyright claim on). I feel so sorry for you, what a mess you had. Take care and hope you and your family are all okay.
Mate, your my hero last night, ive uploaded a video from and hour or two after it, and im in dallington, i say the same thing "im going to get my internet going, and upload this" LOL!!! Ive been waiting for someone to capture it raw and on a personal level not the cctv fotage ahe. Good on ya and keep safe!!!
BTW I give permission to all TV broadcasters to show this. It is in the Ilam/Fendalton area close to the University of Canterbury, an area with almost no visible damage from the street (due to the greater distance from the epicentre, suburban housing, and the damage and repairs caused by the 4 September 7.1 quake). The first quake had no direct loss of life, this one has turned out to be a painfully different story.
Well, we got our power back on last night and I finished digging the computer out of the mess, so finally can give an update. I have to admit I wasn't that worried and was only vaguely within reach of the doorway, mainly to just hold on. But this is only after experiencing the 7.1 mainshock in September then 4000+ aftershocks since - so I knew this level of shaking was safe for the building, and the best area to be in. Pity it was so much worse for those in the CBD and east side of the city.

@hacksign000 actually its best to get to safe position such as in a door way due to the structural support around them, running for the door to get outside leaves you too open to getting badly injured by falling items or more likely to be crushed if parts of your roof cave. Not to mention once outside you will be exposed to falling power lines, trees, and the cracks that are opening all over the ground there.
@hacksign000 Actually running out of the house can often be the worst thing you can do. During the period of the quake, there is often falling debris to worry about as well as other significant dangers.
If you're in the house, stay there and go to a doorway. you don't have t worry as much abou random thigns falling on you, and from what other people have said it can structurally hold up quite well. Plus from what the poster has noted, it was a very earthquake resistant building.
@achangavi He was in a doorway, and by the look of all the stuff falling, he probably wouldn't make it to a table without being bombarded with falling objects.
Wow!!

Looks like adxnz was standing in a doorway during the shock, which if you are inside is probably the best place to stand before heading out

who the hell film this during an earthquake. How dumb. During an earthquak, you need to GTFO of the house -_-
