  • Hello Andre, Oss!

I'm brown belt karate student here in Brazil, and the karate have always been present in my life. I have been very impressed by the Kaminari-arashi kata, which you have posted on youtube.

However, the kata, I think, is not complete, and I'm very interest in to learn that kata. I have also read in your blog that you have created a DVD with many other videos. That DVD is avaliable in someway?

    Thank you very much!

  • Thanks your answer Andre. Do you know kata Kyakusen Sandan?

  • Yes, shodan to nanadan. However, Asai Sensei amalgamated them into Ransetsu (More commonly known as Rantai) and renamed Kyakusen shodan as 'Ashi barai no kata` or simply 'Kyakusen'.

    All the best, Andre

  • Hi Andre. Ask, when Asai has shown it ката, and what he spoke about it? I was at several Asai seminars and never heard about this form. Is there a video where Asai shows it ката? Thanks

  • Hi Nick,

I learned a lot of kata from Asai Sensei, but even so, there are many which I was never taught and definitely many I haven't heard of.

    All the best, Andre

  • Thanks SKIFTIGER, it is great that you train with Goran Shihan, everyone seeking true Shotokan karatedo in Auckland is very fortunate to have him there! If people were serious, there would be only one Shotokan dojo in Auckland.

If you ever make it down to Christchurch, and it's OK with Shihan, please come to training.

    Osu, Andre

  • Osu Andre Sensei,Fantastic and pleasure to watch you.Gorin Shihan speaks very highly of your Karatedo,So does bredan who trains with you occassionally.Osu from SKIF

  • Wow, this is beautiful! Any place I might find a diagram of the embusen for this kata??

  • wow andre, thats just amazing. It´s fast and looks really good. Nice Kata.

Just found it through your also nice blog.

Thanks for all your work on the blog and on youtube

  • Hi Andre! The first and the second of may I have made a stage with you in Lignano Sabbiadoro in Italy, and I liked so much the training that we have made!! I want to thank you because you have teached me a lot of things and I have understood things that before I didn't understand.. Sorry for my bad english, I'm italian!! I hope that you have understood what I have written.

Thank you so much for all, you're a goooooood teacher!

    Martina!!

  • You know, there's one thing I can't stand about that Andre Bertel guy! It's that I can't buy dvds of his classes! With somebody who knows this much (forget about his technical skills, they aren't for mere mortals), it's important to get it all on video so that it's preserved!

  • Andre,

thank you very much for this video. I really hope to see a lot of videos from you, expecially clarifying the concept of junansei, as I think that saving Shotokan practitioners from a stiff approach is of paramount importance.

    Thanks again.

  • Andre is very cool doing kata. kaminari Arashi translated as thunder storm?

Give to blog translated Asai Sensei kata.i show Kaminari Arashi kata fully.

Thanks to Andrew I think in summer 2010 will have to invite you to Ukraine in Crimea sea

  • Great stuff! I just restarted oyagi Hangetsu- I love the way really good drills are incorporated to disaarm and knock the stuffing out of opponents at close range. Very nice.

  • Very nice. Any chance of tricking you into making the clip of Seiryu available again, though? You really inspired me to practice when i saw it.

    All the best from Iceland.

  • Of course! No tricks required! Hey! If you arrange a seminar for me, and get me there, I'll teach 100% for free. However, you must billet me at your house, train at anytime, and be my tour guide hahaha! My suggestion is that you make money from the seminar like they do here in Japan, I usually don't make money from these events. Osu, Andre

  • Perhaps i could one day convince my sensei to invite you, so that you could show us some Asai sensei way of karate. I would love to go to japan and train with you but i have to finish university first ;-) Well anyway perhaps one day I will arange a seminar in poland with you. If you would like to come of course.

    Osu

  • After checking flight-prices from Japan to Iceland, we might be able to arrange for a seminar up here. :-) You forgot to make Seiryu public again, though?

    Osu. :-)

  • Sure thing, I videoed it today after training, however, the practice was held at an old Jinja (Shinto Shrine). It was so slippery that my rear foot in zenkutsu-dachi pivoted rearward to nearly 90 degrees to creaty stability for my waza. I'll film again later at the dojo for you, next time I have access to a camera. All the best from Japan, Andre.

  • Andre, you are very good.

Congratulattions on keeping Asai Sensei Karate alive.

  • Thank you very much, many shihan here in Japan have invited me to teach at their dojo because of this reason. I have a very different physique to Sensei, however they recognize that the way I generate energy is from Asai Sensei's teaching. Also I have not Shotokanized Asai Sensei's karate which has been the case globally since he passed away. Anyway, thank you for your kind comments. In saying that, I'm only one person, so lets all work together to keep Asai Sensei's karate alive!

  • Great and effective kata. Thanks for upload the video.

  • Great to see André. This is a kata that I miss seeing on a regular basis.

  • Sorry that I did it so often! :-)

  • I'm just sorry that I had so much else to focus on at the time that I only walked through it a few times, rather than learning it (and many others).

  • Man I need to get to Kyushu...Great video Andre, but I sure wish there was more....

  • Mizuho and I can't wait!!! There will be much more when you get here Joe! Again congratulations on your wifes Nidan!

    Let's all train together!

    Osu, Andre

  • Shoot if we can swing it, we might be there as early as next August. My sensei is getting 2 new knees and wants to climb Mt. Fuji :)

  • Hi Andre. I really enjoyed watching this! I also saw your interview posted here. I enjoyd that immensely. Very nicely done. "myshotokan" asks if this is Shotokan kata. What is Shotokan? Mr. Asai said, "There are no Karate styles. There is only Karate." Thank you for posting these Andre. Take care buddy.

  • Thanks Bob, please get your dojo to host me for a seminar!

As you know I've been teaching all over Japan and have yet to go to your dojo.

    Osu, Andre

  • Powerful kata!

  • Andre. Thanks for posting this. Fantastic stuff. All the best from Kokura! Ossu.

  • Beautiful - but this is a shotokan kata?

  • Thank you for your kind compliment.. It is an IJKA Asai-ryuha kata... Asai-ha Shotokan-ryu. IJKA has both Shotokan and Asai style kata, as does the JKS. All the best from Nippon, Andre.

  • Andre Sensei is good but this "Tony Petronelli Sensei (3rd Dan)" i'm afraid has BAD kihon. He lifts the heel of the foot of his thrusting leg while doing gyaku zuki or oizuki. bad basics.

  • I'm pretty sure you're the best technician ever. At least, I hope for you, because you don't seem to have the best attitude I've seen.

  • Point taken. Sorry for the attitude, to commenters here as well as my apologies to Andre Sensei and Petronelli Sensei. My apologies gentlemen.

No I'm not the best technician ever :-(

  • I can personally vouch for Petronelli Sensei. I have trained with him many times, & he is one of the top karateka left in New Zealand.

  • Osu

    Great

  • This stance is my favorite...Osu

  • This is my favorite kata...especially at 1.13...Osu

  • Thanks! Are you with JKS Mexico? If so please give my best regards to them there! I hope to see some of you at my dojo here in Kyushu. Osu, Andre.

  • Firstly, sorry for my delayed answer... I'm not with JKS Mexico, (as far as I know, JKS Mexico is in Baja California, far away from D.F., where I live) i'm with WSKF)... anyway, I'm hope one day I can travel to Kyushu and ask for be your trainee...

again thanks for your fantastic blog, and for -in my modest opinion, I'm just a 1st kyu- your very precise and real Karate. All the very best, Miguel Lavandeira OSu!

  • Great and thanks Miguel... Sorry I assumed you were with JKS there as I get quite a few emails from them. Insofar as coming and training here, everyone is welcome at my dojo regardless of who they are with. So if you make it to Japan, I look forward to meeting and training with you.

Kindest regards and best of luck in your karate-do study.

    Osu, Andre

  • Looks like a highlight reel from something bigger to come, I hope so!

  • Thanks for uploading! It looks like a VERY interesting kata. I've always loved Asai Sensei's style.

I would love to see more videos from his karate.

  • Thanks for uploading Andre, Oss...

  • Fantastic! Thanks for sharing. Amazing posture, balance, power and speed.

    Best regards

  • Excellent!

I´m eagerly waiting for new Asai Ryhua videos by you...

    From Mexico, Domo Arigato Gozaimasu!

    OSu, Miguel Lavandeira.
