  • Well the only time i used Snow leopard was to get the necessary files for the preview (bc its actually better in SL) an Front Row (bc it oddly wasnt included in Lion). On my windows comp right mow i have something similar to expose but not spaces and im fine. But on a mac i feel that i need to have spaces features too. I personally like MC better bc it is one program and integrates fully both expose and spaces and has some things that they both previously didnt. Also its a smaller file size for

  • Well i didnt know you had an old mac. Plus i just cant stand spaces and expose...much easier to navigate as one prgram mission control. Plus i didnt get my mac yet (use my friends often) cuz im waitin for the new line in march.

  • @techster510 Well when you're used to the old system of Expose & Spaces, you get used to it and grow to like it. I've seen the new "Mission Control" in Lion, and for me, the old Spaces & Expose were much better. When you like what you had before, the new replacement for Spaces & Expose just gets in the way, and becomes annoying.

  • Your on Tiger?!?! Wow. Lion is 10000000000000 times better for only $30

  • @techster510 You do realize that Tiger is the maximum version of Mac OS that this computer can run? It's 11 years old. Due to processor limitations, Intel vs. PowerPC, I can't run anything above Leopard even if I did meet the specifications requirements. I don't even like Lion anyways. :/ All those flashy features are just unnecessary, and get in the way.

  • Thank though

  • u can quit finder thro activity monitor. i guess thts easier

  • your mac has a lot of lag..

  • how do you turn off the transparent thing, the suck thing, and the quit Finder?

  • @lunlun2000 To turn off the Finder Quit option, use: defaults write com.apple.finder QuitMenuItem -bool NO

    Then use: killall Finder

To turn off the transparent hidden applications effect, use: defaults write com.apple.dock showhidden -bool NO

    Then use: killall Dock

To change the minimizing effect back, go to System Preferences, then Dock. Look for "Minimize Using". Whichever effect is on (i.e. "Genie"), change it to the other (i.e. "Scale"), and then back to whichever you want to have used.

  • @lunlun2000 hey kid two things. one did you know that quick time has a built-in screen recording option? when you have quicktime running you just go to file>start new screen recording. then its common sense from there. but also do you know how to make folders in quick look transparent so you can see the contents? I've done it before but i forgot how i did it since i got a new computer a while back. lemme know if you do thanks

  • @327bran Well the QuickTime screen recorder is only on Snow Leopard and up, which isn't what I use on my computer. As for the Quick Look, I don't know, since the computer I use has Tiger I can't try anything to see. Google is always your friend though, it's a lot easier to just search for what you want.

  • Is there a way to disable all animations? Disable animation when swapping screen spaces, disable animation when minimizing & restoring? Is there a way to disable shadows cast by windows?

  • @ZygadenusElegans You can disable some animations, some you cannot though. I know you can disable Dock icon bouncing, and some others, but I don't think you cab disable window minimizing. As for disabling shadows, there is also a command for that, but it's easier to just download Onyx. Search it in Google and download it for your version of Mac OS, it has an easy customization settings pane where you can look at what you can enable and disable as far as eye candy and other effects.

  • @mothafu64enfagget If you actually watched the video and took time to notice, it is a different effect, not the slow motion that is being changed.

  • Hi!

In my Terminal Application, I have done something wrong... I think...

When I go to Terminal, My "Login" does not show up. There is no text... The whole page is blank.

Can you help me with my problem?

Please respond as fast as you can.

  • @HKV95 Go into Terminal > Preferences and make sure that your path to login is intact. If your on Leopard then it should be "default login shell (/usr/bin/login)". Other then that, there should be no problem with your Terminal.

  • what happens if u quit finder

  • @leonardkills Not much, if you have other applications open, then quitting Finder is just like quitting another app. If you click it in the Dock, it should launch again.

  • i just pressed the finder in the dock and it came up

  • @Abraham6070 If you quit the Finder and it stays shutdown (by having another application open, the Finder will relaunch itself if there are no other applications running), if you click it in the Dock, that launches it again.

  • why would i want to quit the finder

  • @COmuNisTCOw It's a useful and fast way to restart the Finder without having to Relaunch it through the Force Quit Applications window, or through Terminal as you usually would.

  • @COmuNisTCOw Bet someone money that you can quit finder.

  • To minimize in slow motion, all you have to do is press and hold SHIFT while you click on the minimize button.

  • how do you reverse the hide thing?

  • @zemixis Type the following into a Terminal window: defaults write com.apple.dock showhidden -bool NO

  • @superriku11 thanks superriku11!

  • @superriku11 by the way do you also know how to take back the option to quit the finde- make it so that the quit option disappears again?

  • @zemixis Just use the following command in Terminal: defaults write com.apple.finder QuitMenuItem -bool NO

    Then type: killall Finder

Just as a tip, look at the command, you can see that the command to activate it ends in YES, and the command to deactivate it ends in NO. Once you know a few things about how it all works it gets pretty simple. ;)

  • @Sparky2565 Your welcome. And thank you, I'm glad you liked the video.

  • @Sparky2565 You can change it back under System Preferences > Dock. From there, change the minimizing effect to the opposite of the selected one, then back to the selected one. For example, if Genie Effect is selected, then change it to Scale Effect, then back to Genie Effect, and vise versa. Then just select which one you want and it should be changed back.

  • hi, what does the command "sudo find /System -exec touch -t" and a bunch "numbers {} \;" actually mean

sudo find /Library -exec touch -

    please help!

  • @mhexakosioihexekonta It looks like it's supposed to find a touch file in your /System directory and the other one looks in /Library directory.

  • @superriku11 I executed the command, and things started to act a bit odd

    1. words on my Terminal window looked like this "s st em" then "s st em". they just seemed to expand with time and some letters were missing in the word.

    2. I opened my firefox browser, and all my customized toolbars were gone! I could only see arrows and stuff. and i couldnt type anything on my search engine or the website area. well i actually could, but it was invisible.

i thought maybe it was erasing my HD ?

  • @superriku11 every thing seems fine though now.

i dont if this was part of the procedure or was it a command to erase my HD.

also what could the touch file be?

    thank you very much :)

  • @mhexakosioihexekonta The file touch could be a few things. If your on a laptop, I get a feeling that it may be a file needed for the trackpad to work. But if it's in the library, it's either put there by Apple/OS X, or something you installed yourself, it's more likely to be put there by Apple/OS X though.

  • cmd in windows is so much easier lol

  • @RSyemi14 You only feel that way as you are used to CMD/DOS and Windows. Most people who have little or no experience in either usually side towards Mac and UNIX as it is easier.

  • What does it mean by when someone say RUN this in a terminal?? Someone told me to run the following: sudo dscacheutil -flushcache to flush my cache. What does that mean and how do i do it?

  • @WilsonBen11 Well, to do it, you can just paste the command into Terminal, and hit enter to run it. But be wary, as your running it under sudo. The sudo (Super User DO) command executes everything with full admin privileges, and it can be dangerous depending on what your doing.

  • What does it mean by when someone say RUN this in a terminal??

  • you dont want to quit finder that will fuck up all your applications since finder holds them

  • @Machelp888 It actually doesn't. Finder is the browsing system allowing you access to everything. All your files remain on your hard drive and are still accessible, and the Finder can easily be re-opened too.

  • @superriku11 usually when i do it it sometimes say not responding then i have to restart so thats why i commented

  • i lol'd at the second trick

  • @pea195 The dashboard actually runs in the background. It isn't started until you click it, or press it's activator key. When you remove it from the Dock, it's still running, and still taking up memory. Once you've opened it, it's taking up memory. Dashboard is controlled by the Dock, if you type "killall Dock", it will also quit the Dashboard.

  • how can i get rid of the minimising effect after i type "defaults write com.apple.dock mineffect -string suck" ?

  • @bacon274 If you change the minimizing effect in System Preferences, to scale effect, genie effect, and then which one you want, it will be changed back.

  • @pea195 I'm sorry, I don't understand your question. Could you try to restate it more clearly?

  • ei...how can i make my terminal transparent like your terminal.?

    reply asap

  • @ericglenn123 You can change the appearance from Terminal preferences.

  • @superriku11 how?

i like your terminal...it looks translucent...

    what did you do .?

  • @ericglenn123 I changed it from Preferences under the Terminal menu.

  • Strange.. I could already see the "Quit Finder" button without doing anything...hmmm

  • @AnArmedMan Maybe someone has already run this command on your computer.

  • @superriku11 Impossible! Never mind, I dont know how its done but its like that. Nothing serious.

  • why would you want to quit finder?

and can you actually quit it anyway, or is it just a matter of being able to see the 'quit' button

  • @zlliddude If you want to think of it as "seeing" the quit option, then the code allows you to see it. By default you cannot use the Quit option in the Finder menu, and the code edits a file, which tells the Quit item in the menu to be displayed.

  • How the hell do i get my hide effect back to normal!?

  • @Ab2912 Run these commands without the quotes "defaults write com.apple.dock showhidden -bool NO" and then run "killall Finder".

  • You can use speech to quit finder

  • mymoviesnow.co.cc Please help support my new website by visiting it and watching a movie! :) You can watch free movies on my site, without any membership or payment requirements! Please visit and watch a movie on mymoviesnow.co.cc

  • thanks dude.. but why do you lag that much? is it the screen recorder?

  • @AppleRV Yeah, it's iShowU. When recording, my computer still runs normally, without lag and such, but iShowU doesn't seem to capture every frame, or something, so it appears laggy. But on my next 2 videos, where I am using my MacBook 4,1 (2008) instead of my swivel screen iMac, it's much better, and in 720p HD!

  • @superriku11 ohh okay.. i understand.. :)

  • @superriku11 there's a checkbox for that called "variable lenght frame duration"

  • @himynameismarek Sorry, I didn't know too much about iShowU. I primarily use Screenflow now.

  • why would you want to quit the finder?

  • Because sometimes when modifying your system files, you have to restart the Finder, and using Quit from the menu is much easier and faster than typing "killall Finder" every time you want to restart the Finder.

  • Just wonderin how you find this stuff out??? it puzzles me

  • I learned UNIX and I know the different settings and how to change them.

  • Please continue doing these videos on the Mac Terminal. They are clear and concise, the hallmark of good instruction. Thanks.

  • Thank you! I probably will sometime very soon!

  • OMG UR BRITISH

  • No, I'm not British.

  • @superriku11 ahhh thts a sick accent...or r u just really young?

  • Kind of both, plus the microphone on my iMac (my computer in this video) is kinda weird, if you watch my newer Mac Tricks videos (recorded on my MacBook), you'll notice it's not quite as weird sounding.

  • What's the purpose of killing the finder?

  • Because, sometimes when tweaking your system files, you will need to restart the Finder. Adding "Quit Finder" to the Finder menu makes this quick and easy, without it you would have to open Terminal and type "killall Finder".

  • Except when you quit the Finder it won't restart..

At least not with Snow Leopard...

  • If it doesn't restart, it's because you have another application running.

  • Quits what? The Dock?

  • Thank you, you helped me fix 3 hours of troubleshooting.

  • Awesome, thanks! If you don't mind me asking, how did I help you fix 3 hours of troubleshooting?

  • @superriku11

I attempted to duplicate a DVD into a desktop folder and it would not stop copying or let me eject the DVD. I tried all methods that Apple suggested to eject the CD. I kept getting a pop up that the program was still in use. Using your tip, I was able to close finder and it stopped the copying of the DVD and I was able to eject it.

Do I really need to enable finder again? Thank You.

  • Well, the reason that I showed how to add the Quit Finder option to the Finder menu, is because it is a shortcut for simply quitting Finder. Whenever I type killall and an application name, Finder for example, it is force quitting it, adding Quit Finder to the menu is a faster way of quitting it. Whenever you quit Finder, it opens again, unless another application is open, but you need Finder for a lot of things, so I recommend enabling it.

  • where to download this

  • Download what?

  • @superriku11 i don't have this and i got a macbook osx

  • You should have it... It should be located at /Applications/Utilites/ and Terminal should be there.

  • @superriku11 yeah i know that but i don't have it wtfff

  • Well, I don't know why you don't have it, but unless you find it, you could download a nice Application called iTerm, find it by searching Google, and it can be used as a Terminal. It does all the same things as Apple's default Terminal, just with a few extra features.

  • Download SuperDocker it makes quitting finder a LOT easier. it writes the commands directly into finder and to reboot it just click on finder in your dock. ^.^

  • Thanks for the tip!

  • How am I suppose to undo quit finder command?

  • Type defaults write com.apple.finder QuitMenuItem -bool NO in Terminal, and then killall Finder and capitalization is important, so just copy and paste these lines into Terminal.

  • Okay, thanks. I find quitting finder is useful. :)

  • Your welcome! I am glad I could help!

  • why would you want to quit finder

  • Because sometimes when tweaking certain parts of your system, you need to restart the Finder. So this makes it quick to just go to Finder and then Quit Finder or just hit Command (Apple key on some keyboards) and Q to restart the Finder rather then opening Terminal and typing killall Finder.

  • where can i get the terminal back i accedentally trashed it

  • Sorry, I don't know. You might be able to find the version that was on your operating system by Google searching (ex. Leopard Terminal Download). But I don't know if you will find anything. You may just have to reinstall it from the install cd if you have those. But if I find anything I will tell you. Also, what operating system are you using.

  • My mac came with that minimizing effect

  • I don't know why your mac might have come with that effect. The only way I could get it was like this.

  • I have an I Mac O SX Lepard.

Thanks for your time if you find some thing out please tell me

  • I haven't been able to find an official version of the Terminal made by Apple for Leopard, but I have found a nice alternative called iTerm. It has a few more features than the regular Terminal, like Fullscreen, but the UNIX code works the same. Search iTerm on Google, and you should be able to find it.

  • why is ur mac so slow. is cuz its running a leopard in the snow. haha

  • Because I was running on a iMac G4 with a 800 MHz (I think) processor, and my screen recorder was lagging.

  • at least its not a pc running windows at 800Mhz 1ol

  • Yeah... That would be way to slow.

  • you sound like this one kid in my class last year. oh thanks im just a beginner at terminal

  • Ummmm.....ok? But I'm glad I could help.

  • It won't just work like that, you have to type this command to enable it.

  • how do you change it back after you put in the string suck command? i cant figure out how. i want it to go back to the genie effect

  • Go into System Preferences and then to Dock. Change the minimize effect to Scale Effect and then back to Genie Effect and it will be back to Genie Effect.

  • why would u want to quite the finder though?

  • It's just kinda cool to know.

  • That's not part of the code. To make some things on a Mac go in slow motion hold shift and hit minimize. You can also do this with dashboard.

  • Is that Snow Leopard you have??? Cool... I'm about to get it too...

  • No, it's isn't Snow Leopard. It's Tiger with a different GUI Theme and a new dock.

  • snow leopard isnt out yet

  • Yeah but there's a way you can get Sow Leopard months before it's release date.... My friend did it...

  • how do u find the terminal?

  • In the Utilities folder.

  • how do you change the colors in terminal?

  • Go into preferences.

  • to quit finder all you do is hit command+Q

  • Not unless you have typed this command in first.

  • /\ery good

  • Can you email me by my YouTube account how to do this

  • I told you I would make a tutorial I just finished and I will upload soon.

  • try to upload it soon

  • how do you make your terminal window look like that

  • I'll make a tutorial sometime soon.

  • Can you just email me some time how to do it

    Ps you replied fast

  • WOW!

  • kernel_tas is using 90 to 130% from cpu usage then the pc starts to freeze can u help ?

  • Yep, go into control panel and click to fix a program then tell it to fix command prompt

  • the second part is complicated there is a lot easyer way of minimizing a window in slow mo

just press and hold shift and then clik minimize it will slow mo you're minimiz effect.

    good vid thow

  • Well the minimize effect I showed you was not slow mo it was a hidden minimize effect called the "String Suck"

  • woah, tech worxs. that high quality thing is awesome!

  • thanks!

  • why would u ever want to qui the finder?

  • if you're a system hacker/tweaker quiting the Finder can help you do stuff to your system

  • How do i disactivate the Suck minimizing effect ? Thanks.

  • first change your minimizing effect to

"Scale Effect" then change it back to

"Genie Effect" and from there you can

    select which one you want

  • Wow, you run Leopard Server. awesome.

  • dude put &fmt=18 at the end of your url to watch it in high quality
