Thank you for posting this. One of my absolute favorites. Btw,- you mentioned all three of my most favorite Cure albums in the info section. I have always felt the emotion of those three albums was very much in the same vein. <3
seriously, the amount of the sadness taht this fucking song produces.. its just over the mind..i couldnt have said the phrase ," how did we get this far apart? we used to be so close together how did we get this far apart? i thought this love would last forever "..its just all about love..
and seriously.. after her i became a whore..
she was the last true love of my life..so we are going to be apart forever more..
It's amazing how so many people can sympathize with this song from a scene in their lives, but when you feel like this you just feel so alone!
This song literaly describes my life in the past 3 weeks. And even though I know other people have felt the same I feel like no one knows how bad it hurts...
There was another single they put out that year on casette I cant remember what it was but they werent on the wish album, anyone know what im talking about?
@wilhelm1974 It was called 'Lost Wishes', containing four songs from an aborted instrumental album recorded in 1991. It was available on mailorder only, but will probably crop up on the Deluxe Edition of 'Wish' ... or at least it had better ... no more crappy home demos please Robert! Grrrr ... BTW This is the song that got me into The Cure. I used to write all these flowery ornate lyrics then heard Robert sing, "How did we get this far apart, we used to be so close together" ... and flipped ...
This one is far too sincere to be just a song. To be frank, most of The Cure is fairly honest but there was no motive with this one outside of expression as what my ears tell me. There's songs that just rip you because they're so down like 'Cold' but you'd have to intentionally reach into the intestines of your soul to produce it. This one was just 'get your instruments, I have something to say'. This is music is my kind of cigarette.
I've first listen to this song at the happiest moment I ever lived. And it made this time even more beautiful, making me feel that the pain expressed in this song was far behind me, I had faith in never breathing like the drowning man again...
But when I listen to this now, late at night looking through the open window, I feel that this pure and absolute perfection can not be reached again.
You can hear the ending of something as it crashes to the ground like a flying porcelain plate. I'm sure you can also hear the sound of something great beginning. That's what makes The Cure great. Look into a crowd of people and picture who wants to be true and who wants to be diseased......it's so hard to TRUST....another great song off of the album.
i think its just the price we pay for being alive and i'm okay with it now.. still makes me want to howl though..Oh shit "he won't call anymore" have to howl some more now...
@portalz While I would probably agree that god is a "prick" I don't understand when atheists say derogatory things about a god they don't believe in. Now everyone will flame me horrendously for talking about god's existence in a "the cure" video. whatever.
Between the wine and bread.. i felt the need to find peace...... none came and the ark was a total loss........ you are welcome Zomie. This song is both strength and sorrow. most is just the good vist from our past childhood loves..
the wish album seems to be alot like disintegration...not that its something bad. its rather really nice. Disintegration = one of my favorite albums of all time!
woah i just had a jr high flashback listening to this song. ever had a memory so painful that you repressed it all these years and unintentionally banished all the secondary memories along with it - like the songs you listened to at the time?
the ecstasy of pain--that's what this song means to me. this song makes you feel a kind of acute pain, the pain of regret. pain because you've lost something you'll never get back. your chance is over, and it's all ruined. it is a kind of dark despair. i always want to hear this song in utter darkness, with pouring rain, a glass of merlot, burning incense, and tears. it sounds over the top, but i mean it
i was poor when this album came out and i had just left national city...i need to read the lyrics before i listen to the album ;) seriously like i have almost tried to interpret all of their work....
he waits for her to sympathize but she won't sympathize at all he waits all night to feel his kiss but always wakes alone he waits to hear her say forget but she just hangs her head in pain and prays to hear him say no more i'll never leave again how did we get this far apart? we used to be so close together how did we get this far apart? i thought this love would last forever
I agree. Roberts voice is so tender and emotional. It is like he is playing all my strings.. I cry and think about lost love.. R S ur in my heart forever..
This song so full of melencholy and woe...To me it goes back to The Cure's earlier album Faith which had a lot of songs more like this than Pornongraphy which is in my opinion more about anger than sorrow.
I've come to the conclusion that seeing as how the cure - the wish album has a couple songs that are similar as to the subject, I think the lead singer went through something like what the song is about. He imo, is one of the most talented ppl at portraying his emotions through his music
I listen to this song when my husband and I are fighting. We used to be best friends. We used to be so close...but now its like living in a deep freezer.
Sadly, this album wasn't received as well by critics when it was released, but I'm glad to see there are more people who've come to appreciate it. This piece always made me think of "Like Cockatoos" off Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me. "Apart" is beautiful.
I think this song is about death. He is gone, and can't come back. He still cares about her but there is nothing he can do from the otherside. She wants to die too. He can't call anymore. He just wants her to make it thru and go on without him. I know from experience I found my husband 3o yrs old. Dead due to natural causes, and we never knew he was sick. I can never get back to him now. Its been close to 6 years since I could handle listening to the cure again without wanting to die.
I think the song is helping you deal with the grief. I hope you are ok and good luck for the future. Robert Smith is irresistible when writing like this. Just awesome.
the cure always makes me feel happy when im sad, the first time i ever listend to them when was my my older brother left for college, it was in his cd player, i creid all night listeng to the album over and over
I got into the cure when I was about 12; Due to an older friend constantly getting me stoned and putting on their albums...This for me is the cure at their best...Meloncholy and darkness at its most beautiful!!
I see what you mean and you're right. "Wish" has some "colourful and grey" tracks. But I was pointing to the depressing and dark mode in the style of Pornography and Disintegration. This song has these characteristics and I think it's the only one that shows them precisely than the other songs of the "Wish" Album.
I love this song, real and sad.

I lost the count of how many times I've cried to this song, it so depressing, but you can't stop listening to it. One the best songs ever.
Bittersweet magic, only The Cure can make something beautiful as this.

I got into the cure when I was about 12; Due to an older friend constantly getting me stoned and putting on their albums...This for me is the cure at their best...Meloncholy and darkness at its most beautiful!!

One question, hoe you mean, this goed back to the pornography and disintegration album.
In my humble opinion this song is one asset of the Cure, made clear through a lot of albums.
Wish reminds me of the dual aspect of the Cure.
Colourful and grey...
What are your opinions?

I see what you mean and you're right. "Wish" has some "colourful and grey" tracks. But I was pointing to the depressing and dark mode in the style of Pornography and Disintegration. This song has these characteristics and I think it's the only one that shows them precisely than the other songs of the "Wish" Album.
