This isn't the 1800s, early 1900s or even the 60s-70s anymore. Canada is SETTLED. The country has to work with what it has. There are too many people in Canada for the little number of jobs. The government is in denial that Canada is finally settled. Many are saying that the government is doing it on purpose just to have more people (immigrants) pay taxes. I was born in Canada during the 40s. Immigration was a great thing, when done in moderation from Europe. Once excessive immigration began from the third world Canada's quality of life deteriorated. Some immigrants are good people, but the fact is that we've taken in too many of them over such a short period of time.

Canada always had immigration from Europe. Mass immigration from non-traditional (3rd world) sources started roughly 25 yrs ago when the minority population was 4.7%. 1981 Canada had a minority population of only 4.7%. 2006 the minority population grew to 16.2% in just a bit over 25 years. The minority growth rate in 2006 was 27.2%, 5 times faster then the 5.4% increase from the entire population. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see the parallel, since our immigration policy dramatically altered, starting around 1980 to focus on bringing 3rd world immigrants to Canada, our quality of life has gone down dramatically. Multiculturalism blinds this reality!
In 1980 women made $32,813 in inflation-adjusted dollars. Their salaries dropped a mere $234 by 2000 and in 2005 they were $32,104. This is a SERIOUS problem people. All of our jobs are going to cheap labour markets, and all the immigrants coming to Canada are coming from the 3rd world! If this trend continues Canada will be like a 3rd world nation in 30 years. Why is our politicians letting this happen? Canadian citizens come 1st, not the greedy global bankers who don't care about us commoners!

Once they do so, they will generally migrate into the higher work strata, engineering, medical, administrative, etc fields, for which most of them obtained points to get into Canada (under our immigration points system).
The offspring of educated immigrants also tend to have higher education. Whether or not they find jobs depends on their ability to build social networks.

I was born in Canada during the 40s. Immigration was a great thing, when done in moderation from Europe. Once excessive immigration began from the third world Canada's quality of life deteriorated. I still can't get over the fact that Canada takes in roughly 250,000 immigrants a year. (Usually from a third-world background). Who in the right mind would accept such proportions? That's the highest ratio in the developed world (well 2nd if you believe the UAE is developed, your call). I'm surprised Canada hasn't experienced all the anti-immigration protests. Just look at Europe and Japan. The UK, for instance, is just feeling that tension rise.

People who say immigration is having a negative effect grew in percentage since the last time the poll was conducted. The minority growth rate in 2006 was 27.2%, 5 times faster then the 5.4% increase from the entire population. ps...you also forgot the connect a major dot, NAFTA which coincided with the immigration reform (all done by Mulroney, the great conservative hero). Its allowed our corporations to outsource jobs to Mexico for lower wages, and turned what used to be high earning jobs to mundane administrative tasks, i.e. $34,000-$40,000 a year job. Chinas admission to the WTO has also allowed further outsourcing of manufacturing, this will skew the income analysis between 1980-2007.

Since our non European immigrants began arriving in such vast numbers in the late 80s, we're actually yet to see the results of how these immigrant's children will do, 2020 will be a better litmus test of how visible minorities' offspring have fared in Canada, rather than the small sample size, (something STATS CAN even a acknowledged) which can lead to lopsided results (i.e, refugees, family commitments, etc).

The stats Can article (I believe this is the 2007 bombshell; Canada has 16% minorities that got the white supremacists riled up) sums up a clear truth. Our immigrants are not cotton and tomato pickers, they are highly educated and motivated with higher education that native Canadians. Over time, they are integrating, and are doing it quite well, far better than other nations are with their immigrants (Australia racist riots, USAs Mexicans, Germanys Turks etc).

Immigrants work underpaid positions while re-educating themselves under the Canadian education system and standards. Once they do so, they will generally migrate into the higher work strata, engineering, medical, administrative, etc fields, for which most of them obtained points to get into Canada (under our immigration points system).
The offspring of educated immigrants also tend to have higher education. Whether or not they find jobs depends on their ability to build social networks.
