People are ignorant. He was frozen for neuro-preservation purposes, his brain was still in-tact and healthy. After being hit with a wrench I'd think that it would be damn near impossible now to revive Ted's brain. That's like bringing Disney back to give him a cigarette.

From my research, it seems that the reason for decapitation is that Alcor can use mroe advanced preservation techniques on the head, and the body is not as important.
