Light doesn't travel in a straight line. It only appears in the flashlight because the flashlight uses mirrors to focus the light into a line, and even then light still spreads out. Even laser light (in vacuum) still doesn't travel in a "perfect" line because if it did you wouldn't be able to see the laser beam, since it would travel straight and not scatter into your eyes, enabling you to see it.
