So i guess, it derives from the original event, when Boulez conducted FZs music. Contrary to that it is also possible, that they took just something from some random posthumus coverproject, where just any orchestra plays just anything written by FZ. Ask the real hardcore fans!

Ensuite ils ont du composer une piece serielle. Leur liberation ne pouvant intervenir qu'une fois la composition pouvait etre qualifiee par notre maitre a tous d' "acceptable". @ursinatorable - Yes, the word seems "pylône". It could refer to Ancient Egypt Architecture's pylon, an entrance between two towers. Frank Zappa would be the entrance and Carter / Ives the towers protecting it.

A "pylone" is a pylon, as in a line of pylons... that is Carter, I think he is saying. And Ives is an exception to the normal American music.
"... Two exceptions and a pylon".
He also says both Carter and Ives were/are very intellectual composers. (I don't think ives was... he was natural??).

Actually what Boulez says it's that Elliot Carter is the "pylone" and Ives and Zappa the "exceptions" in regard to the american art music tradition.
I'm french but it's sometimes quite difficult to hear and focus on Boulez's speech when the guy talks german upon it!
