The male is usually more territorial and aggressive then the female, and if you want to be 100% sure you can also check the organs in their butts by holding them upside down and checking.

Doves and pigeons are the same animal. :) Two different words for the same kind of bird. Most languages don't even differentiate.

Yes, I know of languages that have the same word for both.

However, the biggest hint that they're distinct species would be that they don't cross-breed; i.e. they're of different genuses.

In a certain part of Asia, there is a certain species of bird scattered across 4 valleys; I'll call them A,B,C&D. The birds in valleys next to each other can inter-breed, but the birds in valley A cannot cross-breed with those in valley D; in some cases, certain inter-valley liaisons produce 'mules'.
