Yeah but notice that the caption reads "playing drums along to" which generally means jamming, improvising, and playing what you normally wouldnt to build skill instead of just the same driving beat. If you can keep a more complicated thing in time (which doublebass could work on a little bit) then youll have no prob playing the easier beats when they are needed for live performances.

I agree that less is usually better...but not always. It takes a really good drummer to play fast to a slow song and make it fit without ruining the general feel of the song. you have to know when to let up a bit. It's a very fine line when it comes to 'overdrumming' I think. All drummers should indeed try to simplify and learn discipline... until they get really good anyway.
