Your 340 goes pretty well. My parents had an '83 340DL many years ago and had it for years. By god I miss that car more than any of the others we had. I would love to get hold of an '80 345DL, but they are rare as hell. Very underated car indeed.
Picked one of these up on Saturday morning, an '86 340 DL. Variomatic is a weird introduction to automatic gearbox driving, but I'm really, really happy with it. I'll stick a vid up soon!

Yes they can. Not to be recommended though, because handling and steering is not ideal at 50+ mph in reverse.
