By the way, I liked seeing a clip that surfaced on YT of Mort Crim introducing Ted Knight as Ted Baxter, as a guest when Mort was an anchor at KYW in Philadelphia, when it was then the longtime NBC affiliate in Philadelphia. It's regrettable that Ted Knight is dead. Mort will be missed at WDIV! (But Carmen is still there.)
Same for me in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador for having Detroit affiliates (except from 1995 to 1998 when I moved to Ottawa, and the CBS affiliate we got in St. John's was WTOL out of Toledo, Ohio).
Detorit stations for NBC, ABC, and CBS were the defaults for us when I first got cable back in 88. All I can say is this...Mort Crim: Best newscaster ever! And I never even lived in Detroit!
the "local mandate" sucks. i loved the times when it was just WDIV and not "local". i love the logo they used back then... sadly they can't bring it back because it would be almost 30 years old. the music in the newscasts back then needed no explanation. it's just "I LOVE THIS MUSIC... oh crap, they stopped using it...crycrycrycry...."
I'll have to admit, back in the day, I was a Bill Bonds man. But in retrospect, I've come to appreciate Mort a lot more (I guess they all make the likes of Devin Scillian and Stephen Clark pale in comparison.)
I like that "Come Home to the Best" ad campaign and song that NBC had in the late 80s. I didn't know that NBC affiliates had their own version of it, too.
Yeah. I've seen versions for KPNX in Phoenix and KARE in Minneapolis (the KARE promo was taken off this site, unfortunately). An audio-only version of KPRC's version can be found on the Houston's Channel 2 News fansite.
There's also a 5-second ID for WAVY in Norfolk, too.
BTW, dcbatwing just uploaded the KARE campaign again. I should also point out that there is a quickie ID variant for WTVG in Toledo as well, and a still shot of a variant for WECT (from a sign-off) in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Carmen Harlan has been there for at least 25 years.

Of all the news anchors we've had here in Detroit, I think Mort has to be the most recognizable. Live like the squirrels, Mort!

Right at 0:07, the intro looks similar to CBS' mid-late 1980s movie openings.

Oh wow, talk about memories. I haven't seen Mort Crim in AAAGES!

As a Detroiter I was lucky enough to see Mort Crim every day....damn I miss him! What a class act!

I loved Mort Crim's delivery. He deserved to be on a higher stage....

Really, I think he chose Detroit. He had covered the moon shots for ABC Radio, and later was at KYW Philadelphia... but chose to stay in Detroit.

and, was the line 4 based off of the WJBK logo from 1978-1983 which was a line 2 in a red circle?
kargaroc386 3 years ago
Do you have any newscasts from WJBK with the WJBK logo from 1978-83 to upload?
nicka727 3 years ago

The CBS station in Richmond, VA (WTVR) used this news theme (Non Stop Music's "First News") in the early '90s.

Unbelievable opening for 1988...this would have been a nice open even well into the 90's.

WDIV was always a station that went for the new, polished look (ahead of the times).
vfreeck 3 years ago 6
Mort seems to be another one with a botched facelift. Kind of looks like Joe Pesci in the eyes?

No its not Boston's WHDH.
DegrassiLover79 4 years ago
WDIV is NBC's biggest Affiliate, just to let y'all know.
vfreeck 4 years ago 4
But not at the time of this video. In 1989 it was KYW.

Carmen, Bernie and Chuck are all there today, only Mort has retired. This is 1988...and 18 years later Carmen hasn't aged.
