this particular scene at the beginning is the hu plig ceremony/ritual. the string ceremony is adopted from the ethnic lao people, called, kev tes, in hmong, and ba si, in lao. you don't have to be a shaman to perform hu plig, that i know of. but the song to hu plig is a very beautiful one.

Religion is the Human ignorance of Scientific Endevour.
It is said that Christ commit the ultimate sin, therefore he was hang; so why do people honor the sinful creature? I do not understand.
