Ahead of "everyone"? The Commodore Pet out sold Apple, then Microsoft came around and sealed the coffin and Apple has been struggling to keep 10% market share ever since. I don't know about you, but every corporation defines its success by how much it makes - even Apple. Their MP3 players are what saved them and a lot of the R&D seed money came from Microsoft in the form of 150 Million dollars worth of non-voting shares. So next time you listen to your ipod, give MS the respect it deserves.

@jwd0808 The PET? Do you mean the Vic-20? The Apple 2 was a massive seller, outsold the PET and the TRS-80 in the end. the Lisa v Mac civil war helped big blue gain dominance. Commodore are not a company I would put forward as an example of a great business model, or an example of how to dominate market share. They were ruined by one product (the a600) which neither MS or Apple have managed, despite MS bob, and all the macs from 86-98 :P And MS was forced to buy the shares in a patent dispute.

Apple didn't pay xerox exactly, they gave xerox 100,000 pre IPO shares of apple stock. when apple went public it was trading at $35 a share. So 3.5 million dollars. If xerox kept those stocks(split 5x)= 3.2 million shares. It would be worth 768 million dollars today.
