Uh, lucky. I once heard of a guy working on a much larger engine that was up close to the lower block listening at a knock and a rod came through and hit him in the head killing him instantly. Run aways scare the hell out of me. Another one pulled on to a natural gas location, there was a leak and the diesel engine in his truck pulled in the nat gas causing it to run away, it would not shut off and it blew the engine and ignited the gas leak causing an explosion.

what i understand happend here is that the engine is a dry sump two stroke. the crank case somehow had alot of oil in it when it should have been empty. when it started it pumped oil past the piston rings and it ran on the lube oil. the only way to stop it is to cut the air supply. being a hot bulb enigine you cannot turn the ignition off. the guy is holding a jacket or something onto the air intake , which is a reed valve into the crank case like a two stroke motorbike

@hank560 It was running on it's own crankcase oil. 2 stroke diesels have that problem if you dont drain the excess oil off.... Make it very interesting when they "Runaway" Lol. Only way to shut them down is block the intake port or use a CO'2 Fire extinguisher in the intake port..

As an Apprentice i saw a GE V12 diesel take off when my boss used a pipe wrench to rev it up. The wrench got stuck. The engine started running on it's sump oil and blew parts 100 mters away...We tried all sorts of things to shut it down,including cutting the fuel lines but once it was on the sump oil it was way too late...

I shouldn't think it would do any damage, really. CO2 is just as compressible as air (so won't cause any more strain). It's not going to corrode anything, It's just not able to support combustion in the way that CO2 does. The only real difference is that CO2 would be colder. I suppose if it contained lumps of ice or something. Saying that, I'm not a mechanic.

Actually not, i have seen the original video and i laughed out loud when I later saw this masterpiece/rework. You see, I am a bearded fellow like the ones in this video. Not that old, but bearded. If you look closely, you will notice the heavy iron flywheel is spinning in the direction of operator. If that crude four ton "raging bull" fell off the flimsy wooden skids, it would have simply accelerated over his body possibly entangling loose cloths and limbs in the spinning flywheel. My hat truly goes off to the camera man for having the discipline not to help and continue recording. For future reference a metal clip board over the intake will usually stop this type of meltdown. Good video!

Once, when I worked at a wrecking yard, a 7.3l f350 ranaway on me and was running off of oil trapped in the intercooler( the truck had rolled over and oil had run past the intake into the intercooler )I put a clipboard over the intake and it sucked into pieces then ran to like 10,000 rpm and sounded like a top fuel dragster for about 3 minutes while it filled the shop with thick black smoke so I could not see an inch in front of me, then shot it's rods out the side of it's block.

I think the way to stop this would be a CO2 or other gas extinguisher fired into the intake. Without the air to support combustion the engine would stop - regardless of fuel.
