  • It is good to see that alien hybrids like to play guitar and live amongest us.

  • WOW, I didnt know joe satriani could also act

  • Dayum satch knows his scales!

  • i sense Satch is a little jealous with Coltrane, yes? that pitch axis remember me ,vaguely,of some sorta "Giant" somethings....

  • SUBTITULOSS!!

  • I think Joe Satriani is one of the best. 5 stars for him

PLEASE go to my favs and click on SUBURBAN GUY ROCKIN OUT

he doesnt read music, really feels what he plays and improvises his songs as he goes along. the other 2 favs are him also ARIEL (awesome shredding) and ARIEL SIMANTOV (awesome sweeping) pls view comment and rate them as we think he deserves much more recognition .thanks everyone!

  • i have that guitar!!!!!

  • Satriani rules!!

And I have that Peavey Cab!! :P

  • I just love how Joe's doing all of this fantastic playing, and he's just remaining so humble about it. He's never 'above' his audience, which is something you don't see a lot. He's even joking about his playing while having fun, and I didn't hear a bum note anywhere in there.

  • It was in Moscow at Ibanez clinic, not in Tokyo

  • Satch fans might like this cover of Satch Boogie :)

    watch?v=Rh0IvYKSDGs

  • omfg i LOVE SATCH!!!!!!!!

  • "And then I do something weird like that. heh heh" Satch

  • Hmm the Pitch Axis theory, I have a book that focuses on Satch's playing style and this the first topic they touch on. Very interesting piece of theory.

Takes some experimenting to find out what sounds nice but once you know that, great piece of theory to know ;)

  • What book? what book? What BOOK!!!??!

  • I think it was " Joe Satriani: Riff by Riff"

but you can also just google ' pitch axis theory '

  • I always get inspired watching Satch cuz' he makes it look so easy, then I end up frustated as shit and I remember why Satch is Satch and I'm......not.

  • I could listen to him doodle all day!

  • You might as well say that, you wanna watch him jack-off all day.

  • wow... what knowledge can I deduct from your comment?.... nil is what I say......

  • What a fantastic musician. Not just a shredder on guitar. A creatively brilliant guy.

  • last chord sare beatuiful

  • that red guitar is just awesome

  • This is not live in Tokyo, but a workshop in Moscow on March 28, 2004. This section is an explanation of a pitch axis.

  • hahah pinoy amp!

  • Kirk hammet is the worst satriani's student, Skolnick and Vai are better so far!

  • Comment removed

  • kirk doesnt suck hes just not as amazing as joes other students and no they all dont sound the same either

  • To some people anyone who's not a virtuoso just sucks. They only see black and white.

  • i'm sorry... but i'm starting at english and i'd like to know (if you don't mind) what a virtuoso is. thanks ;)

  • A virtuoso is someone who displays an amazing skill and natural talent of the highest order, often from a very young age. Mozart, for example, was a virtuoso. Prince and Stevie Wonder are two more modern examples of people who I believe could be considered virtuosos. Hope that helps. \m/(-_-)\m/

  • no hang on what youre describing is a prodigy. Mozart was a prodigy not a virtuoso. A virtuoso is a person who is technically able at a very high standard, like Satch. Satch way almost certainly a prodigy though. That much we can agree on

  • They're legend.

  • Can't forget Eddie Van halen

  • All you people and your negative opinions. Talking shit about all these bands that have accomplished more then any of you jackasses ever will. No offense to the open minded viewers.

  • that just proves that 2 b a musical genius, u hav 2 no ur theory.

  • This just shows that you need to learn to not be lazy and add the extra one or two letters to your words so you don't look like a dumbass

  • james hetfiled doesnt even know the notes on the guitar and look what he´s accomplished

  • yeah - he went from being the frontman of the best metal band ever to being the frontman of the best joke ever.

it kills me to say it, but metallica hasn't released a good album in a long time

  • this is why satch rules.

just try to say that kirk is better, you fanbois on that other video...

  • you know Joe Satriani taught kirk hammet right?

  • yes and Satch is, was, and always will be, better. His music theory knowledge is outstanding and he is a musician, not just some dude who can move his hands really fast.

  • you don't understand what im saying xD Satriani taught Kirk, he is more than a person who can move his hands fast, i know Satch is better all I'm saying is that Kirk is no half ass guitarist either, rarely does the student ever surpass the master.

  • I give props to kirk cuz he CAN play fast, but he has no creativity. but, he is fitting the style of the music, just like King and Henneman from slayer. I just value quality of notes over quality. Or, If you're Chuck Schuldiner, you write a freakin awesome solo, totally original and fitting to the song, and he is still the best alternate picker in the world!

    DEATH!

  • what makes you think he has no creativity?

  • maybe creativity is not the right word.

He's really just more of a guitarist, not a musician like satchmo

  • Agreed, he's more of a person too hear a song and make a solo based on it, as where satch just makes the songs, which are all basically solos lol

  • kirk hammet's technical ability is not even close to all the boys from g3

  • I bet Kirk has plenty of great music he writes outside of Metallica, but he seems too modest to express it. Listen to some of his other stuff, like Trinity, a song off of Santana's newer album, I think it's pretty creative. But I do agree that Satch is almost untouchable when it comes to writing music. You know that Joe Satriani actually mentored Kirk Hammet. You can even hear his influence on Suicide & Redemption.

  • He's cool.

  • god damn it joe satriani is undeniably the best.

  • that combination/succession of chords is what makes this kind of musicians succeed, cause it´s wierd.

  • Music is the perfect combination of math and emotion.

  • I like that!

  • nice quote

  • That is one shiny fucking guitar!

  • Not quite as shiny as his head!!

  • You must have never seen his Chromeboy signature guitars.

  • rofl @ 1:16 - 1:31 that guy's checking Joe out.

  • Damn dat's good !!! I wanna learn that !!

  • maestro joe sat!

  • oh damn I have lot to learn :(

  • Can someone please tell me how these scales are different?

  • With respect to the root major scale:

    Ionian: No change

    Dorian: add 2 flats

    Phrygian: add 4 flats

    Lydian: Add 1 sharp

    Mixolydian: Add 1 flat

Aeolian (natural minor): Add 3 flats

    Locrian: Add 5 flats

  • I like more of a...

    Ionian - Major

    Dorian - Minor with a raised 6th

    Phrygian - Minor with a

  • I MEANT...

    Ionian - Major

    Dorian - Minor with a raised 6th

    Phrygian - Minor with a lowered 2nd

    Lydian - Major with a raised 4th

    Mixolydian - Major with a lowered 7th

    Aeolian - Natural Minor

    Locrian - Minor with a lowered 2nd and 5th

  • what i did, Right out the scale,so say for instance, major, Write out the 8 notes, or 7, 8th is just the octave (first note again), and write the space between each of the notes. so C to D , full step (2 notes). Sounds long winded, but playing it and looking at it that way for me helped. Wikipedia is also real good on helping out with triads and scales.

  • look at 1:16 the guy at the right lol he looks halerious sry for sp

  • thats ur left... and its hilarious

  • mhh lydian is my favourite ^^

  • i like myxolydian :)

  • it's ibanez clinic in russia, not live lesson g3 in tokyo ;) but who cares - truly amazing

  • i think this is maybe more a simplified version of how he uses it though, its not as simple as just using E as the note. You could base it in E minor, then do this to all of the notes within the E minor scale for different ways of expression. Say you do it with E minor to E lydian, then go back to G major to G phrygian. thats just randomly picking it out and making it simple again compared to the possibilities of it all, but I think thats the idea is to get you to experiment.

  • good player!!! farmer tan lol

  • ok so here is my take on that.... basicaly he is just using E as the root note.. then just changing mode for either a happy sad or mystical sound is that right? so basically pitch axis is playing in modes. cos I thought pitch is when you play the sae not but in a different octive there for going up or down in pith? a heck ill understand one day..... ps Satch feel free any time to pop over to Gosport UK and ill make you a cuppa coffe for a guitar lesson.......... :D

  • I didn't know Vin Diesel can play guitar LOL

  • lmao hahahhahaa

  • Yeah Satch I solo in major switch to lydian or phrygian possibly mixolydian(depending on mood)then finish with a couple of bars in minor pentatonic its just that simple innit?

  • It's amazing how he can play in all these different modes, and never look down at his left hand once. Truly a master of his craft.

  • joe + guitar tone machine= I dont know, but the result is just freakin amazing

  • He makes it look so effortless!

  • This wasn't in Tokyo, this was a clinic in Moscow.

  • he is the best on scales.

  • What he's explaining is called Diatonic Theory. Pythagoras an ancient greek philosopher invented it by plucking strings and changing their length to get 3rds, 5ths, etc. "Music of the Spheres". Its not based on a staff either. The names of the modes mean things in Greek.

  • The names of the modes come from regions of greece

  • Aye, Ionia, etc. My guitar teacher told me Locrian or Lydian, forget which but I think Locrian (sounds dark), meant "really nasty" or something in Greek.

  • Probably is Locrian, in my opinion its the wierdest sounding mode there is. Not much you can do with it in terms of song writing.

  • It's good if you want a really dark sounding song, like...something like slayer only more diatonic. It's far from the wierdest souning scale I can think of though; try diminshed scales and the whole tone scale: those are strange.

  • He's explaining the Pitch Axis theory. Using E as your tonal center and then changing the key around that but always keeping e as the center

  • so pythagoras was musically gifted as well as having an immense mathmatical ability??

  • He's good, but you can tell he's having a little trouble teaching and improvising at the same time.

If you want to play using weird scales like Joe, try tuning your guitar in major thirds. Takes a while to get used to, but it makes scales SO easy--no position shifting and no 2nd string/3rd string rift. Disadvantages: you lose about about four frets of range and it seriously limits chord playing.

Some fun scale patterns, in half steps:

    Indian: 4 1 2 3 2

    Arabian: 1 3 1 2 1 3 1

  • hands down to joe!!!

  • Drgas, i dont think you could be more innovative than vai at an electric guitar, but that´s my oppinion.Sandan443 yes, you don´t need to have long fingers to be great but you couldn´t play some of the things vai plays without long fingers (his fingers are very long)

  • its not impossible to play the stuff vai plays or even impossible to play as well as he does. it just may be a little harder than it was for him.

  • guys what are u both on about who's better...

u dont compare thats the beauty in style between hese guys...they all probably cant play each others stuff exactly the same way...

but ok i do think vais stuff is crazy compared to the others ...he takes his playing to another level...u all wanna hear some crazy guitar checkout a piece of music called "road home" by a berkley student guitarist called prashant aswani...you can find the track on My Space...

  • Hey Man thx for the comment... check your emils, I have already send to you one to your youtube mail box. Greetings! long live to Satriani!

  • Master of kirk hammet and steve vai ;)

  • master!!

  • yes. this is in MOSCOW. no tokio.

  • both hendrix and satriani would think that your discussion is stupid

  • this is not tokyo

  • atlmaryland you fucking moron, satriani is the perfect guitar player and i tell you one more thing vai is better so do the maths. nobody could play like vai just because of his long fingers in the first place, hendrix would cry if he was dared just to solo with satriani (and he would run to his house if dared to vai)

  • i dont think so. what's the generation difference between hendrix and those guys? they owe a lot to him, and if they were around at the same time, hendrix would still be more innovative and they would probably end up taking a lesson from him like most of the top players of his time. so YOU do the math...

  • yes, i know where you go, if hendrix wasn´t there they wouldn´t be here (satriani´s main influence was hendrix). But i´m saying who´s better guitar player(and if you choose hendrix instead of vai, satriani, van halen, petrucci, johnson, gilbert and malmsteen and you add some others, i think you are a liar or you haven´t listenes to these guitar players in a wide range.

  • ummmm ...you really dont need long fingers to be a great player.. sure..it helps when you're a beginner... but dont think it'll make any difference when you're a player of satch or vai's calibre... what you do need though are fast, smooth accurate fingers!

  • awesome

  • Highly innovative! Cool!

  • uv u satch!!!

  • I wish I was..wow..Truly a great lesson

  • This is IN MOSCOW!!! And I'm was there!!!

  • Takes a few miles under the belt before you realise that its not about comparing players its about appreciating them for what they are

  • THIS IS IN MOSCOW,MAN!!!

  • Is there a full video of this available anywhere?

Thanks for this... I learned what pitch axis theory was about thanks to this video.

    -A

  • ayos nga to pre!

  • never heard of those chords lol!

  • comparing guitarists again huh?:P when will you all learn... Joe youre great!:)

  • I think he actually is an alien

  • I'm pretty sure that he and vai are both aliens, from some amazing race that actually have a third invisible arm, which allows them to be amazing.

  • Im sure they are they nnead the extra arms you see to be good. You see its not the arms but the fingers(bone structure) a perfect example are Hendrix and Schenker. God gifted. Schenkers doesnt nead the extra arm. Schenker forgot more than Vai or Sat will ever know.

  • jrbain you have no clue what you are talking about... satriani is my personal favorite guitarist..but dont bash EVH and his 2handed tapping.. 2ht actually follows modal scales over 5th intervals which is the backbone of how guitar and music theory works... satriani took EVH's tapping to a more advanced level...but it was first EVH and that connected fifths over dorian phrygian lydian and locrian modes

  • Exactly, plus for the record, EVH is a classically trained pianist.

  • would you rather..have a million dollars or...hav satch invite you to be the 3rd guitarist of the G3 line up??..thers a good 1 for u all!..he is the pinnical of guitar technique and playing i think

  • for me. Jimmy is the spirit, Joe is the heart and steve vai is the body of guitarrist! joe and vai are cool, but satriani is awsome! SATRIANI ROCKS!!!

  • hendrix would need practise a day or more to play two hand picking he had more heart in some songs but he´s virtuosity is not comparable with vai or van halen

  • agreed. but withouth jimi i doubt the fact that satriani or the other greats would even be playing guitar. He was such a huge influence.

  • agreed, but don't compare him to EVH, as he's a mindless wanking machine. Virtuosity is not just about technique. It's about theory and musicality too, which is why Vai and Satch are virtuosi, and EVH is not.

  • thats the most stupid comment i've encounterd on the whole youtube, your musically retarded

  • you're musically retarded if you can find musical reasoning behind Eruption, or those solos that don't fit the song, the tapping runs that go out of key... I may not be a musical theory genius, but i know that much. Satriani has STUDIED musical theory, EVH has not, and he makes that quite clear. I love your immaturity, it's quite amusing.

  • awwww...astig...my pinoy p plang nakakakilala kay satriani...hehe...joe is such a nice guy...like vai...i think vai owns most of the strangest sound a guitarist can ever produce...but without satriani he wont be the steve vai we know...

  • Im His teacher i swear..cocky little fuckers gonna hear it from me next saturday...

  • Agreed Satch and Vai are by the far the best guitarists in the world. All this neo claasical speed shred stuff ala Malmsteen is just annoying. No one can match Satch or Vai for all round brilliance. But ofcourse no one and I mean no one should be even mentioned in the same breathe as Jimi!

  • Dylan should for his music composition,as should robert johnston,as should leonard cohen as should bowie Hendrix was obsessed with all of them ..if anyone mentioned bob dylan around hendrix his eyes would fill with excitement..music..fantastic

  • erm, satriani puts so much my heart and feeling into his music.

  • Although satches "Until we say goodbye" live in fransico had some feeling (heart) to it.. kinda lol

  • i agree with maryland. sure the satch and vai are awesome guitarists but they dont have the heart or feeling in their music like hendrix did. R.I.P jimi!

  • I heard that his new haircut enables him to swim faster.

  • And for the guy who said satch and vai are the same, take their distortions.Satriani mostly uses distorted tones when vai generally prefers clean ones. This can make music sound way different even the identical notes were played.

  • Well said vaguelee!Music is not a sport.Musicians are rated on their quality of composition. Not on their playing speed. You can double satriani's songs in speed but you can never match him in melody.Vai is superb but I think he is too flamboyant to fit the feeling to the melody and sometimes what he does becomes a soup of sounds, not a song.Or maybe that's how it sounds to me...I don't know.

  • Satriani and Vai have completely different styles. Satriani has a much more traditional tone (PAF pickups, analog stomp boxes, and Marshall amps until recently), Vai uses lots of digital processing in his tone. Satch has a very smooth playing style, and Vai has a more angular approach, owing a lot to the years he spent playing with Zappa. And noone will ever sound like Hendrix! That Michael Angelo Batio dude can play faster than Satch or Vai, but it doesn't matter! Music is not a sport!

  • Yea, i totally agree with you

  • besides technical skill and overall knowledge of the instrument that he was playing.. satriani has nothing on Hendrix...

  • Take their guitars into consideration, and the only things that are the same are the Logo(build) and the Edge Floyd Rose bridge. They have different styles of playings, but it takes a lot of training to master some of their signature techniques. Satriani is a bit easier for me, he does a lot of legato and his whammy work is not too hard.

  • they play different styles also, there are many many things that seperate satch and vai

  • "the only thing i hate about this is that Satriani and Vai sound the same and use the same equipment (Satriani tought Vai)"-chanman65

satriani an vai sound completely different, they use different setups to eachother.

  • monte montgomery could teach satriani and vai how to play. look him up

  • the only thing i hate about this is that Satriani and Vai sound the same and use the same equipment (Satriani tought Vai)

  • yup satriani actually taught kirk hammet too lol

  • not much of a teacher now is he?

  • probably hundreds.

  • HOW MANY SCALES DOES HE KNOW!

  • There is only one scale.

  • Right, so hes going through various modes of the major and minor scale... not giving any intel, where is the lesson aspect of this?

  • It's edited very badly in that sense. He's discussing "Pitch Axis Theory": wiki Pitch Axis Theory, I can't post the hyperlink.

  • as this 1 indian said hendrix smoked weed and thought it made his music better and satch somkes weed jus to smoke it o yeah satch could outplay hendrix anyday

  • are you retarded? no disrespect.. but Hendrix was 40 years ago... QUIT IT!

  • fine guitarist pity his music aint better this dude COULD be awsome

  • bald

  • hahaha, it was said "hendrix was ahead of his own time", but i can say ppl like satch, vai, or my favorite petrucci are now ahead of THIS era, Hendrix was an inspiration to them, so they started from there and got ahead of it, so it's no use comparing, but we should respect Hendrix, our favorite musician respects him too, i think that :)

  • his guitar sucks on clean tone

  • of course it does

  • Hendrix is was way better than all these other guys were and in a category of his own. He could outdo any of these guys and can play even faster and with more variation

  • lol of course ;)

i think u dont have to tell us whats going on man

  • Hendrix was a great songwriter and visionary, but if you think he could play faster than guys like Satch, Steve Vai or Paul Gilbert, then there is something wrong with you. And more variation? Did you not watch the video and hear how many different sounds Joe got, while keeping the tonal centre the same?

  • no way man hendrix is great ! and joe is great ! hendrix is an influance for a lot of guitarists of generation next ! and joe is an influance now and surly next !

  • Have a puplic debate about it why dont ya!

  • Helliconia, what do you mean when you say he masturbates with his guitar?

And before I wasn't saying that you don't like his music because you don't play guitar, I was saying that you have no understanding of what emotion is on the guitar. Which you clearly don't. I've been playing guitar nearly all my life, I'd also think I'd know what I'm talking about more than you.

  • this is not Tokyo, it was Joe's clinic in Russia in 2003

  • Malmsteen it is.

  • malmsteen

  • I dont really care if i am disagreed with for this but well hendrix was great by his days standards by todays standards he isnt anything that special. not to say that because of hendrix things didnt become what they are today. but i am a guitarist and i havnt heard anything by hendrix i couldnt have a shot at and well i "know" alot of people better than iam. but hendrix is not anything special. there are more emotional guitarists out there and technically better guitarists too.

  • Comparing is stupid...They're both good guitarists...who you like is a matter of taste..and hendrix is not mediocre.. if he was they wouldn't consider him one of the great guitarists out there.

  • It's stupid comparing jimi hendrix to satriani... it's STUPID.. But if you really want to know who's TECHNICALLY better, it's joe satriani. jimi hendrix wasn't as fast as Satriani.. jimi hendrix didn't understand a sh*t about legatos and tappings etc..

  • i could never understand guitarists thinking. its like 2 kids on a playground (my dad can beat up your dad). how can u say Satch doesn't play with feeling? how do u know what hes feeling? why don't u guys just accept the good qualities of a player and disregard the rest? Picasso just shreds Michelangelo. how can u compare art is what im asking. makes no sense.
