from what i have been doing, use frostfire spec when you ding 80. and then untill about 4500+ gs id say go to fire spec/ arcane then once you top off at about 5200 gs and start doing some icc stuff i suggest arcane but most on my server prefer fire because it is easier on mana for the long fights in icc.

flamethrowing helps living bomb and scorch, which are part of your rotation, and dragons breath i even take in my fireball pve spec, because its just really useful for questing/soloing and has saved mine and the healers asses quite a bit in heroics
@8element Well if you spend a few points in Frost spec, you will basically have Piercing Ice which improves Frost crits, and Frostfire Bolt will both benefit from Piercing Ice AND the Fire Crit improvements in your talent tree. So Spamming Fireball will only benefit from the Fire talents. :)
also in the fire talent tree, theres the skill to cast an instant flame strike for no mana at all, after every dragon's breath and blastwave u cast that hits somthin,,, its called firestarter i think

Arcane / Frost and Frost / Arcane fall way short of Arcane (57/3/11) and Frostfire (0/51/18 +2).
Why? Because of ignites. Ever since classic WoW, ignites have been the hallmark of fire builds.
A fire mage will get 10-25% of his damage from ignites which is why crit is so important to keep those ignites burning.
2) Frostfire has the highest crit multiplier of any spec in the game (315% damage compared to Arcane's 175%) which makes it so bursty and why crit is more important for fire.
-First as a FFB mage, u dont need flame throwing as venlfreak said
-for raiding dragons breath isnt really nessecary unless u are raiding ToC and are in the Fac. Champs encouter for a little extra CC, but if u have a frost PvP spec, thats even better
-last point that i have found is that you can make a macro to use all your CD's at once, this just makes it easier to pop the CD's all at once, instead of haveing to click on them

You should include living bomb in your AOE DPS. Also, make sure Living Bomb isn't up when you cast combustion. You don't want Living Bomb crits (Living Bomb glyph) taking the Combustion bonus when Fireball/FFB crits are much better to utilize the combustion crit bonus.

Can someone look at my girls toon and tell me why she sucks? Lunarfairy Fenris US Horde. She is doing 1200 dps on trash and possibly 1500 dps on bosses. She is in mostly pre heroic gear. Is she doing ok? I know nothing about mages.
she might to first switch mirror of truth which is a melee dps trinket with something a casting dps would use i would switch glyph of molten armor with glyph of scorch since it will then apply 5 instead of 1 stack of scorch making it easier to manage hope this helps

Arcane rotations are actually harder...and you have mroe control over burst in arcane....with less gear arcane is clearly better than FFB if and only if you master the rotations....but spellpower and other gear scales differently with different specs- if you have a lot of very powerful gear arcane stops being as good.
imo arcane is the best, but mainly because it is the easiest for people for to understand quicker than the fire specs, but with arcane you dont have too much of a mana pool u run out fairly quick.
I can go about 3 1/2 to 3 min on a heroic dummy.. and if your in an actually fight you will be losing that mana ALOT slower so i dont any problems with mana as arcane
i understand its harder to conserve mana then any other spec but im just saying its not that difficult to keep your mana up in a boss fight. god damn man y do u have to go all crazy from one comment
and did i mention the fact that im in naxx 10s and blues so my mana isnt as high as it could be so... if i get a couple thousand more mana i will last a lot longer
eh im in 4/5 8.5 last a long time but still in heroic gear i never ran completely out of mana in naxx, just need to know a good mana conservation rotation
well frostfire is only trainable at lvl 75 rank 1 and rank 2 at 80 any spec can use frostfire bolt but the spec he has chosen is more suited with frostfire bolt as its damage its bennifited from fire damage but crit can come from both fire and frost if im not mistaken
1. XPEARL, options allow you to enlarge your debuffs and show timers on them under the target health bar.
2. MAGEFEVER, has customizeable pop-ups that show you when hotstreak/fingers of frost/ clearcasting etc. proc
3. finally.. ECASTINGBAR, any casting bar re-write will help, but this is a personal favorite of mine. tons of customizeable options. Re-size, move, add text, text size, color, length, height, pictures etc
- as for the spec, ALWAYS go 0/53/18 and copy this rotation exactly to maximise dps.. if you still arent happy with the numbers you're putting out, its probably an issue with gear or lag.
- this is not a pvp spec at all.. you may be able to pull it off but its nowhere near as advanced as a frost/arcane or deep arcane build. - last but not least, FROSTFIRE IS THE BEST SPEC FOR RAIDING. it gives maximum dps and a very nice mana pool to work with.
I have recently woken my mage from a sleep pre sunwell and was curious to what spec i should go for for raiding since frost just isnt viable and this seems like something that really suits me.
if you want to do some dps with a little gear, spec arcane, has also a good burst capacity but with a good gear the dps/raid spec at the moment is fireball spec, less based on crits than ffb so your dps is more stable, the crits are huge unless it uses more mana.
LOL ok first off Glyph of Improved Scorch or w/e its called isnt needed b/cuz other mages will have it so u can depend on them. 3 best are Glyph of FFB, Molten Armor, and Living Bomb, and also im way undergeared then him and i crit like 13k on the Heroic Dummy and he needs more hit prolly just a little u got sum misses :P and Whats up with your bars? Icelance, frost nova, dragons breath, and the other pointless ones are for pvp. l2p

That is X-Pearl unitframes. And then just set it up to show it Via - Target and there it should be. As well as the castbar is shown under Player tab.

if you read the description for combustion, it only stops after 3 nonperiodic dmg crits so living bomb doesn't effect this at all

well frostfire is only trainable at lvl 75 rank 1 and rank 2 at 80 any spec can use frostfire bolt but the spec he has chosen is more suited with frostfire bolt as its damage its bennifited from fire damage but crit can come from both fire and frost if im not mistaken

well fire has more crit than frost but frost still can crit it does has a high chance if you spec correctly into frost

A MAGES MUST HAVE MOD LIST
1. XPEARL, options allow you to enlarge your debuffs and show timers on them under the target health bar.
2. MAGEFEVER, has customizeable pop-ups that show you when hotstreak/fingers of frost/ clearcasting etc. proc
3. finally.. ECASTINGBAR, any casting bar re-write will help, but this is a personal favorite of mine. tons of customizeable options. Re-size, move, add text, text size, color, length, height, pictures etc

- as for the spec, ALWAYS go 0/53/18 and copy this rotation exactly to maximise dps.. if you still arent happy with the numbers you're putting out, its probably an issue with gear or lag.
- this is not a pvp spec at all.. you may be able to pull it off but its nowhere near as advanced as a frost/arcane or deep arcane build. - last but not least, FROSTFIRE IS THE BEST SPEC FOR RAIDING. it gives maximum dps and a very nice mana pool to work with.

It's not the best raiding spec. TftW is an awesome talent combined with spamming fireball. And (in my opinion), arcane is the best.

if you want to do some dps with a little gear, spec arcane, has also a good burst capacity but with a good gear the dps/raid spec at the moment is fireball spec, less based on crits than ffb so your dps is more stable, the crits are huge unless it uses more mana.

LOL ok first off Glyph of Improved Scorch or w/e its called isnt needed b/cuz other mages will have it so u can depend on them. 3 best are Glyph of FFB, Molten Armor, and Living Bomb, and also im way undergeared then him and i crit like 13k on the Heroic Dummy and he needs more hit prolly just a little u got sum misses :P and Whats up with your bars? Icelance, frost nova, dragons breath, and the other pointless ones are for pvp. l2p

watching this makes me regret selling my mage. No more 12k+ crits. Btw I never had dragonbreath in my pve build think u must have discarded the extra range talent or something. Oh and for ppl wathcing living bomb is your friends you missed it a few times in that vid casting ffb twice after it procd.

There is no mod that shows when hot streak procs. The interface mod you see with the moving characters is called Xperl.

You're wrong there is a mod that shows: Scorch time, LB time and Hot streak proc as bars.
It's called Burnout. Works great both for FFB and FB speccs
