I think most English-speakers understand what it means. it's poetic expression, as are passages of the Bible that also talk about the road rising up. the idea is that the road will be easy if it rises to meet you, like the path is accommodating you. and it's just a beautiful image. "success" is vague, abstract, and not fit for poetry or song.
Nicely sung except that the translation from the Irish is NOT 'May the road rise to meet you' . That is a nonsense. Go n-éirí an bóthar leat translates as' may your path be successful'. Even in Ireland roads do not rise to meet you. Besides, who wants to walk uphill.
Yes, the verb 'éirí' does mean to 'rise'. But with the prepostion 'le' it has the sense of succeeding.
Very nice performance!! I directed this piece with my Concert Choir about 20 years ago.
