  • Tom T. Hall was a legend and a true STORY TELLER!!!!!

  • Anyone know this song from the end of Sequioa Throne by Protest the Hero?

  • I am now a fan of Tom T. Hall. Everyone said he's just a storyteller but he's also one heck of a singer. I really like him. THe 1st time I saw him was with Tammy Wynette's show he was good, but now he's really likable to listen to. Way to go Tom T. Hall.

  • we still love you tom t hall

  • Still bring tears to my eyes , what a song, what a singer :(

  • One of the best songwriters in the business

  • CLAYTON WAS MY COUSIN

  • From back in the day when CMT was good. I watched it all the time.

  • Where are all the great song writers now.

  • @jcghgt

all the new song writers have to be politically correct ,which means if it's good we won't hear it,if it's bad they wll glorify it .Been to the movies lately ?Tried to watch TV ?I bet there's a lot of talent out there ,but the kids of today will never hear it .............

  • Good childhood memories here. My gram used to blast Tom T Hall We would all jump and rn around dancing and singing. Never forget a good time.

  • Comment removed

  • ok clayton delaney

  • I'm named after this song:)

  • Great to hear the story behind the song from the Story Teller himself...Tom T!

  • I'm looking for a song by Tom T Hall called the "Barn Dance" I used to listen to it all the time when I was a kid in the 70's. I still have the LP, but I was looking for a way to get it on CD. I can't find this song anywhere.

  • @kirbyj72 Hi, I listened to that album heaps when I was a kid. Fox of Fox Hollow was the album. My 2 older kids who are now 15 and 19 loved it to. I now have a 2 year old and decided to track down the CD. I bought a CD that had all of the songs from the original album, plus some newer kids songs that he did. Country Songs for Children. I live in Australia and I ordered it via Amazon. My 2 year old says Sneaky Snake as soon as we get in the car. !!!

I still love it too !

    Good luck

  • @freorover Was my favorite album too.

  • I love the story behind this song

  • love this song

  • Good on ya Tom great song

  • I have loved Tom T. Hall since I was a kid. My dad grew up around him, so we heard him a lot in our home.

  • Great video of days gone by that'll become more meaningful in years to come. BTW, this is one great song.

  • My Clayton DeLaney was Billy Perry Harold from Cornette, Texas. Both of us from dirt poor families, I was about the age of 10 when Billy came over and played and sang...the first song I learned from him was Wildwood Flower for my dear mother...the second song I learned from Billy was "Day Tripper by The Beatles"..that one I learned for me,

Thanks for having been such a great influence on me Billy,

What I learned from you opened many doors of opportunity that led to many friends and my wife.

  • I miss Tom T..

Hope I see him up there with Clayton.

  • @thejohnalien60 he not gone..jeeez

  • He's one of those guys who can really get a guitar to bark.

  • Great song Tom!!!

  • Another real honest to goodness song writer. Great song, Tom T!

  • i like it ...

  • Yep another top song, do love the TomT Hall hope he's living a good life in his twilight years and we get to treasure the ones he's writing now later in our life to look back on

  • Why would such a young man die? I did not know this song was about someone Tom T Hall really knew of , Kinda sad, I have always liked this song The Lord Likes picking King David played cunning on the Harp...to say he he got down for King Saul David was a musican.

  • Young men die ....I also thought Clayton was on old fella

  • an amazing underrated guitar player, He made that ovation sing.

  • The story teller strikes again may your music live long Mr. Tom T.

  • Sorry I meant Sequoia Throne lmao

  • 3:16 Ending of Protest's song wrtech :)

  • @Konkretersoldat thats why i checked this song!

  • Great song!!

  • just fantastic

  • What a GREAT song. I've carried that name, Clayton Delaney, around with me for a good many years. I think it speaks to lots of us who had heros when we were kids. Especially some of us, who didn't have much of anything except, maybe a hero. Thanks for posting. Good job.

  • tom t hall is the story teller

  • i used to listen to this when i traveled with mum and dad and still love it

  • i used to listen to this with my dad who lives up north brings back memories =)

  • smilin jack was the girls dad....

  • Did Tom T Hall ever write or sing a song about "Smiling Jack" or " Captain Jack". About a girl waiting for some one who reminder her of her father? It a good song.

  • I found it. It's called Ravishing Ruby.

  • Thank you. There are so many good songs that

I remember the song but not the name. Sometimes the station names it and the artist, but not always. Or I don't have a pencil and my memory holds for about five minutes.

  • @tunenut122 "Ravishing Ruby." Smilin' Jack was her heart throb.

  • @tunenut122 The name of the song you are searching for is called "RAVISHING RUBY"..."waiting on Smiling Jack he''ll come rolling back..That was her daddy's name that was all she ever knew..."RAVISHING RUBY"..

  • Tom T. is a great storyteller. I recorded this song and posted as a reply. Will you check it out to see how I compair to the master? Thanks, Sherrill

  • Oooops, Mr. Clint you WERE correct about it being "hot" baloney but you had the wrong song. The song that that line was in was, "A WEEK IN A COUNTRY JAIL".

  • Yes, you are absolutlely right, "HOT" Baloney...and doesn't that make it sound even MORE appetizing ? Mmmmmm. You Country folks sure know how to eat and your women are real purty too !

  • I mean, REALLY, ANY song with the final line in it that says, "AND WAITRESS, BEFORE YOU GO, COULD YOU BRING ME A HOT HAM SANDWICH, PLEASE... LOL ! And in one of his other songs he actually makes you hungry by mentioning BALONEY, EGGS, and GRAVY..mmmmm !

  • That's HOT Baloney, eggs and gravy from the Ballad Of Forty Dollars, and yes I get hungry everytime I hear that

  • I first heard this song way back in 1971 on our AM Country Station here in Toronto CFGM 1310 when it was released. I then bought a GREAT 8 Track (remember THOSE ?) of Tom T. Hall's titled "IN SEARCH OF A SONG" I listened to it and I have been hooked to Tom T. and his unique style of songwriting ever since. He is a CLASSIC !

  • The story teller. I never heard the story on this song until now. 5 stars and I posted my version as a reply. Check it out. Thanks, Sherrill

  • love Tom T 's songs!

  • Outstanding!

  • I like Tom T. Hall, that's why I gave it a try to sing one of his songs that's not often heard and not seen in Youtube elsewhere. So come by and leave a comment please. :-)

    Thomas

  • Great song, Tom T. Hall has always been a grat storyteller.

  • do you guys no where i cud get tabs to learn this?

  • Completly correct, One of the best story tellers in music!! Hands down

  • This guy is fuckin' amazing!

  • this and Fox on the Run are my favorites by Tom. i also like Whose gonna feed them hogs.

  • Fox On The Run and Who's Gonna Feed Them Hogs are two of the WORST songs Tom T. Hall ever performed ! Although "Hogs" won 5 CMA Awards and a couple of Grammys in 1973 !

  • Comment removed

  • Actually, I'm 51 and yep, I'm a city boy. But I don't understand what you mean by being a "city boy".

  • Comment removed

  • I understood the "Hogs" song perfectly, and it is a fun little tune but it was a "tongue in cheek' song by Tom T. And I was only being facetious, the song NEVER won ANY awards !!! "COUNTRY IS" is a much better demonstration of Tom T. Hall's vast talent.

  • Where did you hear that "Hogs" won all those awards, you must be crazy

  • Where's your sense of humor ? I was only being facetious...

  • he is the best

    the clayton delaney died.

    thanks

  • im watching with my 2 yr daughter... like i learned bout tom, some 30 years later

  • Haunting lyrics. Tom T. Halls songs always tell a story. This story is about all the guitar picker's that didn't make it, or didn't care to. Great song. Love it. Always did.

  • Wow im soo lucky as a fan to get to see this..

  • a true artist

  • We grew up listening to Tom T Hall and everytime I hear anything he sings it takes me back to those 'good ole days!'

  • same here

  • The chicken shits took down his video about the monkey who became president.

  • i still have it on an album

  • I only wish I could make sense out of this gibberish. People who are illiterate shouldn't post to the public. Save it for My Space or some other forum where someone might care to see what you've been up to lately. What a shame that tax dollars went to "educate" you.

  • speak english you freak

  • Compare and contrast:

    Clayton D. and Curtis Lowe.

  • The two men that could tell a story in thesir songs was Tom T. Hall, and Bobbie Bare. They were great, and I'm so glad YOUTUBE is here to preserve their greatness.

  • Shel Silverstien (sic?) wrote some of Bobby's songs, (the winner is one) but Bobby sang them so well.

  • i grown list 2 bluegrass music

  • justamomma i know what u mean, my popaw used to play this song alot, and this song reminds me of him, i miss him but thank god for memorys

  • that is very true..thank God for our memories..and our loved ones that are still with us.

  • ol tom thall is great

  • I agree. Another in a long line of southern story-tellers. Awesome song- It reminds me of a friend from my hometown who died when I was in my early 20s (he was 48 at the time) who tried to make it in L.A. as a guitarist (he was a great player) but was overcome by his personal demons.

  • this was the song that my sister sang at my daddy's funeral...when ever i hear it i can't hold back the tears...my dad loved to sing..especially old hank williams songs..there is times on this earth that i wonder why bother if such a good man like my father had to leave it..and then i look at my children and it all gets clear for me..but there is still times when i can't stand the pain..for I loved my daddy so much I was the youngest of 5 kids and the bond i shared with my father was so great...

  • great old tune im a metalhead but this song rules

  • good music todays contry is shit

  • great stuff

  • Country Songs of America forever!

    Roberta

  • Olive Hill, Carter County, Kentucky, The USA!!!!

  • Tom T. Hall was the best guitar picker in ....

  • awesome!!!!

  • i have always thought the world of tom t hall,i was a kid in the early 1970's.tom t hall was my hero.he reminded me of my song writng family.the wilsons ,the warriners of russell county ky.good times.

  • Thanks for this. I originally came to the song via David Rea and members of the Greatful Dead. There really doesn't seem to be a bad version of this song.

  • I like the version of Bobby Bare much better.

But the song itself is great!

  • *Great stuff! I wish I could have met "Big T". This man was a prolific writer and as he said in this clip he wrote what he knew about. He kept it simple and yet his songs are fantastic.

    Thanks for posting this!

  • My uncles used to have a small country band and my uncle Buck used to sing this and he sounded better, actually, than Tom. I also like "the Ballad of forty dollars". Thank you so much for posting this

  • i liked this clip...i would like to have seen even more particularly when he spoke of his songwriting success of having 8 songs on the country charts at one time, which i think is a feat yet to be equaled in country music for a songwriter. i like it when Tom talks of his life and his encounters with show-biz people. I have that "Son of Clayton Delaney" song the other commentator mentioned. It's rare...from RCA Records. I have it on an Import CD from Australia on Camden Records from 1997.

  • Great Stuff! One of his classics - and the sequel if you like, Son of Clayton Delaney was good too. Do you have this one tucked away anywhere?
