I am now a fan of Tom T. Hall. Everyone said he's just a storyteller but he's also one heck of a singer. I really like him. THe 1st time I saw him was with Tammy Wynette's show he was good, but now he's really likable to listen to. Way to go Tom T. Hall.
I always enjoy Tom T, Hall Singing, I'm a Big Fan! I had the Pleasure of Meeting Tom T. at Marion, Va. on Sat. Apr. 5th at the Lincoln Theatre he was doing a Show for the Song of the Mountain. I met him about 10min. after we had Arived. We was walking down the Sidewalk, & here come's Tom T. walking up the Sidewalk, I stop & ask him could we get a couple of picture's with him. He said sure! What a Nice Guy, I never will forget it!! I gave him a couple of my CD's too.
all the new song writers have to be politically correct ,which means if it's good we won't hear it,if it's bad they wll glorify it .Been to the movies lately ?Tried to watch TV ?I bet there's a lot of talent out there ,but the kids of today will never hear it .............
I'm looking for a song by Tom T Hall called the "Barn Dance" I used to listen to it all the time when I was a kid in the 70's. I still have the LP, but I was looking for a way to get it on CD. I can't find this song anywhere.
@kirbyj72 Hi, I listened to that album heaps when I was a kid. Fox of Fox Hollow was the album. My 2 older kids who are now 15 and 19 loved it to. I now have a 2 year old and decided to track down the CD. I bought a CD that had all of the songs from the original album, plus some newer kids songs that he did. Country Songs for Children. I live in Australia and I ordered it via Amazon. My 2 year old says Sneaky Snake as soon as we get in the car. !!!
My Clayton DeLaney was Billy Perry Harold from Cornette, Texas. Both of us from dirt poor families, I was about the age of 10 when Billy came over and played and sang...the first song I learned from him was Wildwood Flower for my dear mother...the second song I learned from Billy was "Day Tripper by The Beatles"..that one I learned for me,
Thanks for having been such a great influence on me Billy,
What I learned from you opened many doors of opportunity that led to many friends and my wife.
Yep another top song, do love the TomT Hall hope he's living a good life in his twilight years and we get to treasure the ones he's writing now later in our life to look back on
Why would such a young man die? I did not know this song was about someone Tom T Hall really knew of , Kinda sad, I have always liked this song The Lord Likes picking King David played cunning on the Harp...to say he he got down for King Saul David was a musican.
What a GREAT song. I've carried that name, Clayton Delaney, around with me for a good many years. I think it speaks to lots of us who had heros when we were kids. Especially some of us, who didn't have much of anything except, maybe a hero. Thanks for posting. Good job.
Did Tom T Hall ever write or sing a song about "Smiling Jack" or " Captain Jack". About a girl waiting for some one who reminder her of her father? It a good song.
I remember the song but not the name. Sometimes the station names it and the artist, but not always. Or I don't have a pencil and my memory holds for about five minutes.
@tunenut122 The name of the song you are searching for is called "RAVISHING RUBY"..."waiting on Smiling Jack he''ll come rolling back..That was her daddy's name that was all she ever knew..."RAVISHING RUBY"..
Oooops, Mr. Clint you WERE correct about it being "hot" baloney but you had the wrong song. The song that that line was in was, "A WEEK IN A COUNTRY JAIL".
Yes, you are absolutlely right, "HOT" Baloney...and doesn't that make it sound even MORE appetizing ? Mmmmmm. You Country folks sure know how to eat and your women are real purty too !
I mean, REALLY, ANY song with the final line in it that says, "AND WAITRESS, BEFORE YOU GO, COULD YOU BRING ME A HOT HAM SANDWICH, PLEASE... LOL ! And in one of his other songs he actually makes you hungry by mentioning BALONEY, EGGS, and GRAVY..mmmmm !
I first heard this song way back in 1971 on our AM Country Station here in Toronto CFGM 1310 when it was released. I then bought a GREAT 8 Track (remember THOSE ?) of Tom T. Hall's titled "IN SEARCH OF A SONG" I listened to it and I have been hooked to Tom T. and his unique style of songwriting ever since. He is a CLASSIC !
I like Tom T. Hall, that's why I gave it a try to sing one of his songs that's not often heard and not seen in Youtube elsewhere. So come by and leave a comment please. :-)
Fox On The Run and Who's Gonna Feed Them Hogs are two of the WORST songs Tom T. Hall ever performed ! Although "Hogs" won 5 CMA Awards and a couple of Grammys in 1973 !
I understood the "Hogs" song perfectly, and it is a fun little tune but it was a "tongue in cheek' song by Tom T. And I was only being facetious, the song NEVER won ANY awards !!! "COUNTRY IS" is a much better demonstration of Tom T. Hall's vast talent.
Haunting lyrics. Tom T. Halls songs always tell a story. This story is about all the guitar picker's that didn't make it, or didn't care to. Great song. Love it. Always did.
The president song isbackupt twice. No references too washinton in either. In the Third Riech music by jewish composers was banned. Subhumans could not create beauty after all. Tom t. Hall and John Rich and the tea partys and all Rednecks are this dictators Jews. We scare him to death.
I only wish I could make sense out of this gibberish. People who are illiterate shouldn't post to the public. Save it for My Space or some other forum where someone might care to see what you've been up to lately. What a shame that tax dollars went to "educate" you.
The two men that could tell a story in thesir songs was Tom T. Hall, and Bobbie Bare. They were great, and I'm so glad YOUTUBE is here to preserve their greatness.
I agree. Another in a long line of southern story-tellers. Awesome song- It reminds me of a friend from my hometown who died when I was in my early 20s (he was 48 at the time) who tried to make it in L.A. as a guitarist (he was a great player) but was overcome by his personal demons.
this was the song that my sister sang at my daddy's funeral...when ever i hear it i can't hold back the tears...my dad loved to sing..especially old hank williams songs..there is times on this earth that i wonder why bother if such a good man like my father had to leave it..and then i look at my children and it all gets clear for me..but there is still times when i can't stand the pain..for I loved my daddy so much I was the youngest of 5 kids and the bond i shared with my father was so great...
i have always thought the world of tom t hall,i was a kid in the early 1970's.tom t hall was my hero.he reminded me of my song writng family.the wilsons ,the warriners of russell county ky.good times.
Thanks for this. I originally came to the song via David Rea and members of the Greatful Dead. There really doesn't seem to be a bad version of this song.

i liked this clip...i would like to have seen even more particularly when he spoke of his songwriting success of having 8 songs on the country charts at one time, which i think is a feat yet to be equaled in country music for a songwriter. i like it when Tom talks of his life and his encounters with show-biz people. I have that "Son of Clayton Delaney" song the other commentator mentioned. It's rare...from RCA Records. I have it on an Import CD from Australia on Camden Records from 1997.
