  • Epiphone Masterbilt and a Martin D 18---Both good guitars played by good pickers--

  • good pickin fellows--funny hats----what's the type guitar the fellow wearing funny hat in first segment is playing?

  • @micmoable looks like a martin, but there are so many copies these days

  • Good picking fellows--funny hat! What make and model guitar is that one funny hat fellow is playing? I think the other guy is playing a Epiphone Master Built guitar

  • Thanks. Those are our fishing hats and I'm not sure why we wore them to the contest that year. I believe it was really hot. I'm playing a D18, Steve is playing an Epi Masterbilt.

Yeah, this was really mostly just for fun, as many have already pointed out we're not really Bryan Sutton level here or anything. I haven't played the last couple of years. They'e upped the ante now and are attracting big guns (like Roy Curry who won this year) so I don't bother anymore.

  • Goodpicking fellows--funny hat!

  • you guys are super consistent its great sounds good!

  • don't bash minnesotans, we know our music,

  • yer darn tootin'

  • Starts off with "Whistling Rufus" then Beaumont Rag

  • please tell me those ain't his trophies..... I need to move to Minnesota and become a legend

  • post vid prove you're better

  • I'm with you TrueBluegrass, Theyd probably think I was Tony Rice in Minnesota lol

  • How many guitar players does it take to change a light bulb?

Only one, but there's usually 5 or 6 standing around saying, "I can play that."

  • The last tune is a medley "Forked deer/ Whiskey before Breakfast"

  • Good picking and thanks for posting.

Does anyone know the title of the last tune please ?

  • Nice picking, but I couldn't get away with wearing those hats.

  • hum! Et après?????

  • They sound like beginners...

  • YOU MUST BE A SUPER STAR!!!!!!

  • These guy are average (maybe).

  • i hope these guys didn't win

  • Did you leave the Taka...., out of the contest, i noticed a martin in this pic... i got an old solid top takamine from early 60's i'd sell, im saving some sumpn better. hard to find tho/ good job and song..

  • Great job - but I have one problem here. There is no way this is January 25 in Minnisota! It would be freezing.

Anyway, what is the name of that second tune? If anyone could tell me, that would be most appreciated.

  • Take a look at the flyer in the first few seconds 0:00 - 0:08 it is August 31st through September 1, 2007. Jan. 25 is the video post date.

  • Beaumont rag

  • well played boys

  • Flat Picking Championship? They are in desperate need of guitar pickers in 'sota if that's what a state fair flat picking contest sounds like.

  • How many folks competed in this? I ask because there's quite a disparity between this style of competitive play and what I see where I live, Tennessee. What I see here is more of a "just sitting around and picking" style. That's fine and it's fun to do. It's just not what one would see in any flat-picking competition here. Just wondering...

  • Actually, I do!!!!

  • and you are a negative nancy

  • Different styles vary accross the country and the world...maybe you folks in Tennessee like to get really animated with it. We're pretty laid back here in MinnesOta.

  • Down here, you see more of the hard-driving bluegrass or fiddle tune style. Like you said, it's all relative based on the popular local styles. Check out "#3 Guitar Competition in Clarksville" to see what I'm talking about and this is not the state championship. Check out Cody Kilby,, Roy Curry, and Steve Kaufman for their playing styles: all champions in Tennessee. I like faster and more laid back stuff just depending on my mood.

  • I guess music contests are good to get people out and about and showcase some talent but they should not be taken too seriously. Music is a creation it should be about having fun and playing and making sounds together. Coming from the heart and soul. My personal view is we worship the stars way way too much specially in Rock etc. Listen, enjoy the sounds let the music send chills down your spine.

  • I agree to an extent but when you hear and see what some of the guys who've won the national championship or at something like Merlefest can do, it can give you a standard toward which to work. I'll never be that good. (I got started way too late.) Still, it helps keep me from getting into a comfort zone. I know there are always improvements to be made.

  • The same could be said for you. In case you hadn't noticed, I hadn't been on this page for a month. Trolls and flamers are the scourge of the Internet.

  • Mate, I appreciated your "thread". Its interesting to me, from Oz, to learn of the guitar culture in the USA......one day, maybe??? I'm like you, started way too late but I still love it and like to set new "upper limits". Like the way you handled 'rex' too!

  • @flatpickjohnny you are so right---good music soothes the soul and gives you such good feelings---why worry about commercializing it so much---

  • @flatpickjohnny Ageed, love it, lol its all about the love of the music

  • SHOULD HAVE WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP!

  • should have been champions!!

  • We need a video of these mysterious ukulele sessions!
